I CROSS COUNTRY First Row Coach Iohn Plichta, Iohn Hey: derson, Russell Winkle, Clifford Buganrfic Ellis Enlund, William Humer, Edward Merril Florian Wind, Alvin Borchert, Clifford Wenze Le Roy Herda, Iim Dogger, Leonard Kogsinsk Charles Francis, The Bulldog Cross Country Team, coached by Iohn Plichta, finished the season which ended in November by placing second in the state meet, Mid-west, and suburban. The only team to defeat the Bulldog pedmen was the South Milf Waukee Red rockets. This past season West Allis' ace miler, Charles fChuckI Fenske, spent a few days of training with the High School runners. The three outstanding runners at the close of the season were Russell Winkel, Le Roy Herda, and Iohn Brixius, Apparently doomed to one of the cellar positions in the 1940 track standings, Coach Neil Gonyo had to round out his squad with but seven lettermen as the nucleus. Coach Gonyo depended on the relays and the distance men to put the team on the Winning side of the ledger. Urged on by our able coaches Sirs Gonyo Gabert and Calahan the maroon and gold gridders from August to November scrimmaged through heat and cold rain and shine thick and thin victory and defeat They did themselves proud when they made their debut under the lights for the first time the players through hard work and willingness to practice proved to many people that sometimes statistics are wrong. The boys who through their hard work became regulars were: left end George Iurovich' left tackle, Henry Hucg left guard Howard Haack' center Robert Babickg right guard lake Erwing right tackle Marvin Schumannp right end, Rodney Zimmer- quarterback Peter Hrnjakg left halfback, Roy Hallorang right halfback Eugene Gurgullg and full- back Quentin Brunette.
