These students now begin to notice themselves as potential prom goers, and begin to get acauainted with fellow members of the class. Taking pride in their appearance they usually slick up and wear the qunday best even though their mothers say they shouldnt 'lhis they believe is a definite asset to all lunlors And then months before the prom takes place they attend all school activities in couples so that they can decrde on the all important question With whom am l gorng to prom? The only team to defeat the Bulldog pedmen was the South Milf Waukee Red rockets. This past season West Allis' ace miler, Charles fChuckI Fenske, spent a few days of training with the High School runners. The three outstanding runners at the close of the season were Russell Winkel, Le Roy Herda, and Iohn Brixius, Apparently doomed to one of the cellar positions in the 1940 track standings, Coach Neil Gonyo had to round out his squad with but seven lettermen as the nucleus. Coach Gonyo depended on the relays and the distance men to put the team on the Winning side of the ledger. The outstanding men on the squad were Don Heller, Bob Babick, George Iurovich, Le Roy Herda, Edward Murphy, Art Balian, and Bud King. TRACK Bottom Row C Wenzel, T. Lucas, R. The rest of his sauad had to be filled in with inexperienced players, The matter was not improved wlien pre-season standings were released, and the Bulldogs were an unanimous choice for the cellar position. The crying towels were brought out and the expression on the coach's face was anything but cheerful After the first two games, the doubt was all gone from Coach Gonyofs mind, and he knew that even if he didn't have the most polished team in the Suburban League, he did have the team with the most fight. The Allisrnen dropped out of first place when they were defeated by Shorewood 24 to 12. They would not be denied though, and regained the first rung by virtue of two spectacular victories over West Milwaukee and Whitefish Bay. After these two victories, Ken Olson, outstanding man on the Allis team as well as in the Suburban League graduated and West Allis hopes again sagged The team fought back twice as hard and managed to cling to first place for part of the second round but the loss of Ken Olson proved too great and the Bulldogs began to slip The Allismen lost several two point games and at the end of the season were lodged in third place This season has been the best for the West Allis Basketball team in eight years and a record that every fan should be proud of BASKETBALL fVarsityl First Bow Andy Muhar Al Camillo Paul Cincotta Bob Pavlovich George Ne kich Quinten Brunette Second Bow Mgr lack Vari Veghel Fred Benneth Coach Gonyo Al Pintar M Francis Gronowski Third Bow Pat Drummond LeRoy Suwal ki Pete Han Bobert Perthel iid K g Ioe oe qu All JCC Tl C J Bc J Lyi I R L J , . 5 f .Q T-W 'L ' - -. Fiirig fa i'1..,, WLUL, fs ...I U, Mayor for a dayl The rod was taken up this year, however, by the pupils and not the teachers, when they acted as officials of the city government. An election was held placing a student in every office from mayor to sewerage commissioner. They learned what happens at the water works when someone turns on the faucet, what happens when a smart alec turns in a false alarmg and why the city clerk usually has a headache. The real officials of the city probably had a headache trying to straighten things out, but the experiment proved that students too, have ability. The student council, an entirely self-governing body, has done much this year to bring vocational guidance in the school. This program includes a circulating library available to each homeroom. Another function of the organization is the student court, which handles all the locker cases and the incidents that the monitors were unable to deal with. The monitors, con- sisting of one hundredftwenty pupils, regulate the corridors and keep the school in good running condition, A fine training in democracyl o. .own 4 .-... , ,- . .
