However, on January 14. 19, and 21, W.A.'s Creative Writing, Junior English, and Senior English classes were awakened by a captivating and talented man named Gerald Costanzo. Mr. Costanzo is on accomplished poet and a staff member at Carnegie Mellon University. The former high school quarterback has been writing since his sophomore year of high school. Mr. Costanzo said that on many days he sits down for a few hours to practice writing. He noted, ” You never really learn how to write. It's a continuous process. He admitted that he, too, occasionally develops a writer's block and said he sometimes relies upon his subconscious mind for a rush of creative inspiration. He also advised, Get ideas from a role model or a poet you admire. Look at their subject matter and technique. Mr. Costanzo shared his knowledge of modern poetry and assisted us in writing our own poetry, including a rondelet or constructing poems from paragraphs we wrote. During his visit here, which was arranged by Mrs. Miller, Mr. Costanzo was astounded by the wealth of potential here. 107 Mr. Costanzo poses with Mrs. Miller, English Department Coordinator. Mr. Joe Franjione and Assistant Coach. Mr. Mitch Galyas. Although both offensive and defensive strategies were formulated, the defense excelled, holding opponents, with one exception, to less than twenty-one points. The injury-plagued team finished the season with a record of 2-8-0 with four shutouts, but that doesn't depict the entire story. Loyal fans witnessed many final minute losses this season. Dave Schoppe led in passing, completing 45% of his passes, throwing to primary receivers Mark Davis and Mike Dunn. Dave also led in punting and was named All-Conference (second team) Defensive Dock. Rocky McGeory led the team in rushing yardage. Mike Heck took honors as All-Conference Defensive End and Offensive Tackle. Honorable mentions were awarded to Scott Stalling (Linebacker and Center) and Victor Carter (Guard). Coach Franjione claimed that a goal of W.A. this year was. When opposing teams take the field against W.A.. they will stand a good chance of losing . Coaches reported that players were very aggressive earning the respect of their opponents for their efforts. Next year's goal is to break tradition (the losing tradition) , stated Coach Franjione at the First Annual Football and Cheerleading recognition night. November 24. 1987. Right: D. Lambert and C.
