I'm cool. -k KING 1977 PROM COURT QUEEN The King escorts the Queen during their Royal Walk. I found an old boutonniere pressed between the pages of a discarded book, a link with my past, reminding me of pretty dresses, dark tuxedos, and formal dances. Of times remembered only in the mind. I can't remember her name or the color of her eyes. So many things have faded. The only thing I have now is the boutonniere. I must have had a good time to have saved it. Prom Court members enjoy the Coronation Dance. jerry embraces Beth in an emotional moment 21 The typical family portrait. toe and Sandy show their dancing skill. This year's prom was held at the Holiday Inn, May 6,1977. Dancing throughout the evening was to the Nightriders (Prom) and Summit and Fun (Post-Prom). A delicious buffet was served between the Prom and Post-Prom. In addition to the traditional giving away of prizes, there were two added attractions. A dance marathon was held with the two winners being |oAnn Yoho and Bob Palko. A cracker-eating contest was also held. Rick Minarcin (senior) was defeated by Bill LaCard (junior) to everyone's surprise. As each guest departed with his favor (a glass mug), thoughts were lingering to the evening past but looking forward to the day of pic-nicing or sleeping that lay ahead. Something must be interesting. BOB MCKEAG FUN A constant stream of people flowed to the dance floor. Beth is lost in thought. Look at all that delicious food. 24 WHO WENT WITH WHOM Ed Ackman - Linda Werkmeister Sandy Alimena - Dennis Hennemuth Sue Anderson - Brian Czambel Tim Baker - Nancy McWreath Mike Barnett - Denise Rekula Don Behnke - Amy Davis Roberta Beyer - Tim Gerstner Linda Byerbach - Carl Lyons Naile Bikul - Greg Hanczar Dave Boling - Diane Smith Mark Bradburn - Jule Weible Dan Brazen - Sharon Zierden Kim Bryan - Kim Donaldson Dan Burgess - Donna Ploof Bobbye Cain - Jerry Antel Debbie Cain - Keith Wilson Debi Callan - Randy Mink Bill Casasanta - Elaine Homol Marie Chapman - Gene Symosko Chrissy Chernik - Mike Oberender Suzi Clark - Ed Herrick Dina Cole - Pete Kubatka Virginia Coombs - Jeff Dulin Rosemarie Crivaro - Gary Bokor Curt Davis - Sandy Connelly Mary Davis - Randy Rugh Danni Dawson - Darvin Thomas Tammy Dietterich - Joey Darabant Troy Dugo - Munaii Wiechelt Butch Dymkowski - Kelly Thomas Ann Dzubinski - Steve Bistarkey Beth Ergen — Flip Thomas Barb Ewing - Tim Bruce Ed Faux - Diane Oivaro Sandy Feller - Bill Miller Renelle Fuhry - Mick Cain Maryanne Formoso - Jay Hradicky Cindi Gamble — Robert Palmer Tim Garrett - Teri Tomasko Kevin Garrett - Linda McCoy Jan Gato - Chuckie Demel Donna Gazda — John Bohasky John Gazda - Linda Casasanta Nelson George - Gina San Gregario Tom Gerstner - Shelly Preganz Keith Gilbert - Tracey Yerkey Debbie Giovengo - Bill Johnson Beth Goodall — Rick Schultz Eddie Grant - Mariann Woefel Lisa Grant - Bill Davis Sheila Grub - Mike Furno Eric Gumbert - Belinda Arden Kurt Halbedl - Kathy Voyvodich Sherrie Lah - Augie Beyer Dale Lane - Beth Kline Keith Lewis - Maxine Kocuba Jerry Loeffler - Debbie Winkle Glen Maas - Jackie Hays Dale Mayfield - Karen Kilian Scot McFarland - Kathy Marlatt Dan McConnell — Debbie Sullivan Brian McCullough - Carol Longstreth Bonnie McKean - Bruce Toward Don Meerdo - Sue Tatro Mark Mercer - Tanny King Lynell Metro - Dave Scaff Rick Minarcin - Denise Garrett Kim Multunas - Jeff Buffington Jerry Murphy - Andrea Selinsky Eric Nordmann - Sherri Charlier Bob Palko - Sally Price Rex Pass - Becky Buffington Doug Pennington - Patty Prevade Jeff Peternel - Margie Kisow Terry Pet rick - Terry O'Rourke Andy Petros — Margie Maness Chris Poznak - Brenda Hughes Vic Pregel - Sharon Radovic Sandy Price - Joe Formoso Tammy Roedler - Steve Ciaramelle Debbie Roman - Earl Wiechelt Mark Schepcoff - Chris Ann Singiser Ken Schmac — Debbie Spirik John Schnatterly - Cindy Augustine Mark Schneider - Debbie Murphy Rich Seigler - Sandy Chamberlain Shirley Seigler - Mark Griffith Walt Shifler - Denise Midili Rick Snatchko - Nina Fisher Carol Staaf - Jim Cowden Bill Stanislaw - Karen Kisha Charlotte Staub - Bob Dawho Mark Stefanski - Carol Garrett Miles Stephens - Lynda Betlyn Ginger Stevens - Roger Costiloe Terri Sturgeon - Ross Rohbeck Michelle Tatro - Dave Godleski John Thomas - Amy Campbell Franklin Thornhill - Letita Kelly Drew Tomasko - Kathy Brosi Tim Tosh — Marcia Chauvet Grant Trautman — Connie Koger Jeff Treese - Carrie Singiser Tana Treese — Jim Sandridge Kathy Ulrich - Bill Hoberek Sharon Valent - Ed Sachetti Ron Valenti — Bonnie Maslanik Bob Vettorel — Terri Yecko Rose Vettorel - Eddie Ayers Terri Wade - Buck Williams Tami Wagner - Larry Mezinski Cindy Weiler - Larry Ulrich Rich Wenta - Mariann McCaffery Mike Willy - Penny Clark Tricia Wilson - Gary Swoager Jeff Wolbert - Mariann Moorhead Gary Yordy — Kim Dayton Donna Zakutney — Kenny Breezon Cheri Zimmerman - Mark Holeva Pam Zook - Jeff Davis m CLASS OF 77 - THE WAY WE ARE SENIOR LEADERSHIP Linda McCoy has been recognized as a Semi-Finalist in the 1977 National Merit Scholarship competition Susan Anderson and Keith Lewis were Commended Students. Kathy Duncan was high salesperson for Senior Magazine Sale. Memories light the corner of my mind. Misty water colors memories of the way we were. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind, smiles we gave to one another for the way we were. Can it be that it was all so simple then, or has time re-written every line? If we had the chance to do it all again, tell me would we? Could we? Memories may be beautiful, and yet, what's too painful to remember we simply choose to forget. So it's the laughter we will remember, when ever we remember the way we were. BOOK ENDS: Time it was and what a time it was A time of innocence, A time of confidence Long ago it must have been. IT'S YESTERDAY ONCE MORE. ■ CLASS HISTORY SENIOR BANQUET Tim and Sally sit one out. Drew and his girls. This year's SENIOR BANQUET was held at the Norwood Party House in Bridgeville, May 31.1977. Dancing entertainment was provided by the group TOAST. Millions of class histories have been written through the years, but the Class of 77 flatters itself that ours will be different because, you see, we are geniuses. It all began when we started first grade. Oh, what an ordeal to leave the familiar security of home and enter a strange new world! But, what an adventure! Soon the year slipped by, and we said farewell to first grade and began the long road to a higher education. We struggled through the ABC's and the multiplication tables. Before we realized, we had passed through eight years of school. Suddenly we are Freshmen! One bright, sunny morning in September we stood before the large building and realized we had eight happy years behind us and were about to start on the ninth. By this time we realized that if we wanted to be famous too, we must follow in the footsteps of the Seniors. So we developed from a green Freshmen class into a wise class of Sophomores. Of course, all Sophomores are wise; but we were the wisest of all. When we took over the leadership of the Soph. Class, we were a happy group of boys and girls. What grades we captured! (Some of them were even good.) What traditions we upset and what records we made! At this time, we accomplished our first great deed for which we gathered a great deal of fame; we discovered a way of getting through classes without opening a book. We used a method never before used by W.A.H.S. students. We learned how to bluff or thought we were bluffing until report card time came around. Then, oh, woe! (At that time we decided that it was best we study once in a while, as a good example for future Soph Classes, of course.) Poets often say that there is nothing so rare as a day in June. But also there was nothing so glorious as that day in September, when we became Juniors. In case no one knows, Juniors are the favorites in school. The Seniors treat them with a little respect because in the hands of the Juniors rests the Prom, and the Sophs follow them adoringly in the hopes of getting a bid to the Prom. We all took part in many activities — Journalism, the band, chorus, cheerleading and clubs for which we could find the time. But as every other year quickly drew to a close, so did 1976; we were on the last lap of our journey. Now we were Seniors, the pride and joy of W.A. We studied hard because we were on top and there was no falling back. May came and went and so did the Prom. When Commencement Day arrived, it seemed as if everyone came to see us be graduated. It was the saddest and yet the most wonderful day of our 12 years of school. Thus ends our autobiography. A new chapter will be printed in ten years, after we have conquered the world and written our names in flaming letters across the sky. (by M. Tonight we begin to look forward to all our tomorrows and our sights are set on the very peak as we prepare to Climb every mountain! As well as these towering peaks, each one of us must experience the low points, the valleys. Adversity plays a part in the molding of each individual on this stage as well as the entire audience .. without the valleys, the mountains wouldn't even exist, the sheer joy of conquering and winning wouldn't occur, for the valleys in between the peaks make the mountains possible. The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. During the last four years of education we have been carrying away the small stones. We have conquered one part of the mountain and we are prepared for the climb ahead The Psalmist says I will lift up mine eyes to the hills, from whence cometh my help ... reaching the top is a goal to be prized. Standing at the peak, one can see farther and better than before There is no magic wand which will replace the necessity for hard work . .. the happenings of yesterday are important only as they prepare us for today and tomorrow. 52 From father to son - Eddie is presented his diploma by his father, Mr. Lloyd Faux. Reverend Harry H. Johns III presented the Invocation and the Benediction at Commencement GRADUATION As warm zephyrs start to blow And apple blossoms come in bloom. It's then that I become aware I'll soon have no homeroom. Each morning when Ol' Sol appears And lifts his sleepy head. It's nice to realize that I Can soon remain abed There'll be no more awaiting The old familiar bus. No one to say sit down - behave And leave the driving to us. Now all too soon I'll have to say Adieu to all my friends -A tear or two will trickle down As high school life soon ends. So fare thee well, ye hallowed halls. I've trod each day for years; Hello to my new life of work, Hope, joy and some tears. Gladys Stocks GRADUATION LAMENT Today’s the day I graduate. To this school I come no more. This, my goal of the past twelve years. Is what I've been waiting for. The days were laced with fun games Along with my growing up: I've developed a personality -I've had to measure up; Not only on test and with teachers -I had to make it with my peers. And now that struggle is over, I feel like shedding tears. I'm going to miss my classmates And the teachers’ constant calls; I'm going to miss the notes and such We passed along the halls. With the diploma comes a sad thought My adolescent years are gone — Now I must face reality. Graduation parties here we come. 54 ACADEMICS ACADEMICS Happy Motoring” from Fidler Motor Sales in McDonald 56 57 The Little Drummer Boy Did you hear the one about the t Ah, fresh air! • m’ju puiar, 248212? 1M 4 A face-off starts Intramural Hockey My Dear Friend, I have traveled with you for the last eighteen years. FOOTBALL The 1976 Indain football squad posted a 3-6 record. The Indians opened at Quaker Valley. Losing a 14 point first half lead, we dropped a 26-21 decision. W.A. then played last year's Black Hills' champion Peters Township in a downpour. Turnovers plagued the Indians as W.A. fell 29-7. The next week it was Carlynton, as W.A. picked up a 25-13 loss. The Avonworth game found the Indians picking up their first win of the season 20 12. The Indians then traveled to South Park where we spoiled the Eagles' Homecoming with a 20-12 rout. W.A. entertained McGuffey to pick up its third straight win, 14-6. The Indians took this three-game win streak to Fort Cherry, where we were defeated 28-0. However, the Indians, though outgaining the Rangers by 100 yards, couldn't put on in the end zone. On Senior Night W.A. hosted eventual Black Hills' champ Burgettstown. In the most exciting and hard-fought game of the season, the Indians fell by a score of 3-0. The Indians closed the season against Northgate in a 28-0 burning by the Flames. The JUNIOR VARSITY played a limited schedule because of weather conditions and finished with an excellent 4-0 record. Beyer Coming off a tough, grueling exhibition schedule, the Indians started section competetion with a combined record of one win and four losses. In the first season outing against Riverside, the Indians fought hard, taking 6 of 11 first places - only to come up one point shy, losing 42-41. Against Sharon, the Indains never recovered from a slow start. While taking four firsts, we lost 98-74. The third season meet pitted the Indians against Black-hawk. Even a home pool advantage and six firsts did not allow for a victory. The final score was 98-71 In the fourth meet West Allegheny finally rolled. Against Quaker Valley the Indians took seven of eleven first places to easily win 106-64. Because of the extremely cold weather, the remaining six section meets against Hopewell, Rochester, Beaver, Farrell, New Brighton and Freedom were canceled. 118 Kneeling - J Schnatterly, 0. The season started successfully as the girls won two of their five exhibition games, beating Fort Cherry and Avella. Then the Indians slumped into a losing streak, losing the next 6 games. The girls then won their first section game against South Side Beaver by the score of 30-28. As the season progressed, the team gained more confidence, winning two out of its last six games. This year came as one of rebuilding for Coach Macek as our squad contained many underclassmen. Among those seniors, however, who strongly contributed were Randy Trusnovic and Cary Yordy. Randy led the team in batting with a .340 average while Cary compiled a .306 figure. Both of these young men contributed two home runs to lead also in that category. Additionally, Randy collected nine R.B.I.'s. And who said pitchers can't hit-for Trus was also our leading hurler, compiling an almost unbelievable earned run average of 0.23.
