Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1976 volume:

THE AMERICAN DREAM America was promises. Its promises have always motivated us — self-fulfillment, freedom, and independence, a decent living. The promise of a life beyond mere drudgery, of being new, young in the forefront of an adventure, on top of things. The I “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” These dreams, these purposes, brought millions to America’s shores, and inspired newcomers to expand the country’s industry, its trade, ats borders, its wealth, its influence. Individualism, success, happiness, involvement: These are the goals set for us under the American Dream. Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed, to me: I lift my lamp beside the golden door. — Lazrus Super is the best description of Linda. 1 . mefr Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. — Lincoln “My mum’s better than your mum!” “Mom said there would be hard times in life. Will the real Jimmy Durante please step forward? WA's unofficial assistant coach. Bill was Mr. Athletics. Some men will gain as much in three or four years as some will in ten or a dozen. — Washington 9 CLASS OF 1979 Kathy Banks Diane Bartos Mark Bartos Robert Bates Larry Baun Lisa Beaumont Kim Beck Ernest Benard Lynda Betlyn August Beyer |anet Beyerbach Richard Bohon Terri Bres Roberta Britton Kathleen Brown Linda Buell Barbara Burgh Carl Cain Kelly Cain Roy Campbell August Capiola Kathleen Carl Kimberly Carr Janet Carson Michelle Catanzaro Marcia Chauvet Gregory Chickis Donna Cogar Jackie Colvin Michael Conn Sally Conn Barbara Cook Sally Cook Cheryl Corbett Constance Corns Denise Cowden Donald Cox Jeffrey Cozzo Thomas Craig Diane Crivaro Bonnie Crowley Ann Custer Susan Daniels Kathy Darbous Judy Deaunovich Nikki Deems Kathy Deleuze George Deluca Bonnie Derosky Edward Derosky Cheryl Elliott James Ergen Kenneth Favand Robert Feller Karen Ferenacz John Fisher Thomas Frankei Timothy Frankei Daniel Garbin Denise Garrett Kevin Garrett Robert George Michael Getty Douglas Glovier Robert Goodwin Harry Grant Marci Greek Henry Gresh Deborah Griffith Loretta Grub Richard Guzel David Hall Barbara Handerhan Bernard Handerhan Chris Hanna Elaine Hazel John Hendricks Steven Henry Beth Herbert Richard Herrold David Hines Cynthia Hlavay Mark Holeva David Homol Douglas Hopkins Richard Hopkins Kathleen Hopson Brian Hosie Scott Houston Debra Hrapczak Elizabeth Hribar Laurie Huggins Marciann James Greg Janney Govia Jenkins James Jones Richard Jula Kerwin Kalp Terri Kehm Lori Kelly Colleen Kerin Jeffrey Kruper Chris Kubalak Dianna Lee Allan Lemashane Linda Lestander Dennis King Margaret Kisow Maxine Kocuba Rachelle Kress Kerrie Kritzo Sandy Linck Jeffrey Lipinski Raymond Locke Thomas Locke Chris Loeffler David Logut Jeffrey Loyer Kent Lutz Tammy Lutz David Maggs Frank Maness Louis Marion Kathleen Mariatt Gregory Mauro Mary McCaffrey Deborah McConnell Jay McCullough Kenny McGregor Robert McGuire Linda McKee Daniel McNair Samuel McRoberts Nancy McWreath John Meanor Beverly Medved Lawrence Menke Mark Miller Randy Mink Sidney Morton Laura Murray Kenneth Naleppa Tammy Niemeyer Daniel Noyes Michelle O'Donnell Donald Oravetz Darla Pagliuca Colleen Palfreyman Michael Pape Mary Papke Susan Parry Brenda Patterson Rebecca Perko Suellyn Perrard Sandra Pifer Donna Ploof Patricia Prevade Sally Price Glen Radant Michael Ranick Sherry Rank Thelma Redick Denise Rekola Thomas Rees William Reilly Rebecca Reitz Suzanne Remy Kelly Renee Kimherly Rieser |ames Rohbeck Elizabeth Runyan Barbara Rupnik Robert Sachetti Jeffrey Salek Shawn Sandridge Laureen Sarver Diane Sauers Sandra Schepcoff Douglas Schiff Marylou Schnelbach Barbara Scott Andrea Selinsky George Sherockman Nancy Shields Gay Shiffler Donald Shipley David Silsley Barbara Sinagoga Michelle Sisko Jennifer Slota David Smith Kimberly Snatchko Theodore Snatchko Linda Staaf Raymond Stacy Edward Staub Frank Stevens Larie Stewart Rhonda Stivason Stephanie Swisher Lori Swoager Susan Tatro Marcia Thomson Cheryl Tomazich Shari Toward 13 Linda Vettorel William Voile John Volpe Robert Wade Roxanne Wade Barbara Wagner David Wallace Frank Washabaugh Raymond Weber Linda Werkmeister Earl Wiechelt Timothy Willy Mark Wilson William Wilson Edward Wischman John Woollett Marlene Yecko Terri Yecko Trina Yecko Marcia Yerkey Raymond Yerkey Barbara Yost Sharon Zierden Diane Zubryd Beth Zynosky ITS GOING TO TAKE SOME TIME THIS TIME It’s going to take some time this time To get myself in shape I really fell out-of-line this time I really missed the gate The birds on the telephone line Are cryin out to me And I won t be so blind next time And I'll find some harmony But it's going to take some time this time And I can't make demands But like the young trees in the wintertime I’ll learn how to bend After all the tears we've spent How could we make amends So it's one more round for experience And I'm on the road again And its going to take some time this time It’s going to take some time this time No matter what I’ve planned But like the young trees in the wintertime I'll learn how to bend. rnzsmz n ngu) 3rcvr' :? Tim Baker, Renee Rank (Co-Publicity) Allegheny County Student Forum. and Gwen Schulze (Sec.) STUDENT COUNCIL Many artists” shared their talents to provide decorations. Soon after homeroom representatives and officers were elected. Student Council began this year's work. Senior week was the first topic discussed. Daily dress-up activities, a bonfire and the senior night dance, featuring the group Ivanhoe,” made up that memorable week. At Christmas, the halls, cafeteria and lobby were colorfully decorated. Refreshments were sold at all home basketball games. In the spring, the Care Free Gum contest kept many students busily writing. W.A. entered thousands of entry blanks. Many members helped to organize the Cancer Society's Swim-A-Thon. Trophies and albums were awarded. Behind every activity was the Student Council's dedicated sponsor — Mr. Wherry. Hey — Everyone’s crashinV’ Beginning around 5:00 p.m. on Friday May 7, many West Alleghenians and their guests slid out of their blue jeans and decked out in their long gowns and fancy “duds for the 1976 Prom. The formal affair was held at the Airport Holiday Inn. Vic Polk began snapping pictures at 8:00 p.m. as souveniers for each couple. The first band “Herde moved everyone to the dance floor. Following Herdethe aroma of a delicious buffet caught everyone's attention. Table by table, plates were loaded with all sorts of goodies. Gingerbread and Granati Brothers entertained during the Post-Prom. Both kept everyone awake until the wee hours of the morimng. At 5:30 a.m. as everyone left, mugs were given to each weary-eyed person as favors. But. it was soon on the go again for a day of picnicking. A “Do you wanna dance? My feet are killing me. Not now. Coach McFarland's outfit started out on the right foot as Jaime Lopez's field goal swamped Quaker Valley 3-0. Against section-winner Peters Township, we succumbed 22-13. Two long passed from Bob McFarland to Herb Getty and Dave Grandstaff just weren't enough. Week three saw Carlynton rush past us 36-0. The Cougars amassed 333 yards rushing. West A overcame a strong Avonworth rushing attack with a McFarland to Getty 79-yard bomb and hung on to win the thriller 7-6. Next to South Park and a 14-6 win over the Eagles. We had a great defense, which allowed just 38 yards rushing, and a balanced offsense of 110 yards rushing and 120 yards passing. Linemen - Row 1 - Mark Mercer. Roy Masquelier. Allen Barrett. Grant. Row 2 — Alex Miller. Lon Madaras. Mike Tomazich. Dan Hartwig, John Kletzli. Harry Wineland. Joe Darabant. John Fornara. Then to swamplike McGuffey and a heartbreaking 6-3 loss. Lopez kicked an early field goal; and it appeared as though it would hold up, but a very disputed pass play at the half was the difference. Fort Cherry, rushing for 343 yards to overcome a strong 170-yard passing attack for W.A., won 30-7. It was a close game, but some bad breaks broke the game wide open. On to Burgettstown where we were upset 33-14. It was a close game statistically, but not scorewise. Homecoming saw a 18-7 loss to Bellevue. The fans were disappointed in the score but not in the players' efforts. Annual awards went to Most Valuable Player, Bob McFarland; Most Valuable Lineman, Earl Hartwig; Most Valuable Back, Dave Grandstaff; Rookie of the Year, Tim Tosh; and Most Improved Player, Alex Miller. Initiation at Bandcamp. 136 The Band began it’s busy year at Thiel College in July. Much was accomplished during those five 90° days of band camp. New music routines and drills were learned for use at football games, pep assemblies and parades. Fund-raising was a crucial part of the band's activities because they were finally purchasing new uniforms. Projects included a shampoo sale, the annual roast beef dinner, a bake sale and the ever-so-popular Christmas candy sale. The hard work of these campaigns paid off; the new uniforms arrived in February. There was a new twist in leadership this year as the band was led by two drum majors: junior. Eddie Faux and senior. Dawyna Edmonds. Officers for 1975-70 were: L. Hrishenko - Pres.. C. Sparber - V. Pres.. D. Werner - Treas.. C. Hookey - Pub. Chrm.. R. Herrick — Jr. Officer. Troy Dugo. an excellent trombone player, attended both District and Regional bands. He made second and first chair respectively. The band also participated in the Christmas Parade in Pittsburgh.
