Klemash, K. Trautman On Sunday afternoon, September 29, a Walk for the Hungry was held in the Oakdale area, sponsored by the Oakdale United Presbyterian Senior High Youth. This 10-mile Walk, one of the 13 in Allegheny County, was held in observance of National Week of Concern for World Hunger, set by a coalition of 30 church relief agencies and other agencies concerned with the problem of hunger. The purpose of this observance was to make Americans aware that millions of people are hungry and many thousands starving to death and to stimulate them to do something about it. During the week preceding the Walk, the participants appeal to persons throughout the community to be sponsors and make contributions for the hungry. Altogether the participants numbered 55 walkers. Abernathy Danny Faux arouses the crowd as he emcees the bonfire pep rally. The Student Council this year achieved many of the goals established in the beginning of the school year. The annual bonfire was a success. An additional event sponsored for Senior Weekend was the Homecoming Dance, where Mary Margaret Thomas was selected as our first Football Queen. Our Queen was presented with a bouquet of roses and a football signed by the football team. The organization also cleaned the gym after pep assemblies and chartered buses to football games. And then there was Sr. Week with each day bringing a different dress style, the 50's, Sadie Hawkins, Halloween, and dress up At Christmas, the Council collected food for needy families, bought Christmas trees, and decorated them. The group also sponsored the Swim-a-thon and distributed brochures for the Walk-a-thon. A final service was purchasing benches from Shop Class and putting them in the lobby. This very hard-working group attended seminars on how to be a better student council, and their achievements reveal they have become a very strong and beneficial organization. Sally and Sandy represented W.A. at STUDENT FORUM. Everyone got fired up at the bonfire preceding the Burgettstown contest. VARSITY CLUB Row 1 D Shiffler, D. Hanczar, D Bates, D Underwood, G. Coach McFarland's squad, opening the season against Bellevue, succumbed to the Bulldog's potent offensive attack, 34-8. The second week of the season found W.A. down in the Valley with the Quakers providing the opposition. The Indians jumped to an early 18-0 lead and then played tenacious defense to hold off a late Quaker bid. The 18-13 win proved costly, for Bob McFarland suffered a knee injury that sidelined him for three games. The Indians entertained Peters Twp. in W.A.'s home opener. A capacity crowd saw victory slip away in the final minutes, 13-6. Traveling again, W.A. met Carlynton and tough defense. We fell behind early, and a second-half comeback attempt fell short, 20-8. Avonworth handed W.A. its fourth loss, 33-6, on the West Allegheny gridiron. The contest, even at halftime, was dominated by Avonworth in the second half. The Indians journeyed to South Park on the following Friday but were defeated 22-20 in what was probably the most exciting contest of the year The Indians lost another squeaker to McCuffey, 12-7. It was almost a carbon copy of the Peters Twp. game as W.A. succumbed in the final minutes. Our next opponent was arch-rival Ft Cherry. While most battles between these two schools have been well-played, in this game, most of the good plays were made by the Rangers. Thus, W.A. had another loss, 31-0. The Indians hosted Burgettstown on Senior Night, and W.A. fans viewed an exciting contest. West Allegheny lost 21-6, but it was a well-played game that gave the Indian fans much reason to cheer. One of these moments came when senior Cliff Connor caught a T.D. pass from McFarland with only seconds remaining in the first half. It was a special moment for Cliff, who had missed the first eight games with a broken leg. It was a dismal season; but, if the Indians could have remained healthy, then they could very easily have had a successful campaign The Junior Varsity played a limited schedule because of a manpower shortage, and they finished with a record of 2-1. RETURNING LETTERMEN The 74-75 Indian Wrestling Squad had a much better season than their 5-7-1 record would indicate. Under the guidance of Head Coach Harry Sherbondy and Assistant Coach Joe Franjione, the team wrestled tough all year despite injuries to many key wrestlers. They came up with a lot of big wins, the biggest of which was the 36-30 upset over Burgettstown. Behind the team this year were the wrestling girls — the Varsity Cheerleaders, Wrestlerettes, and the J.V. Cheerleaders. Their purpose was to promote team spirit and interest in the sport throughtout the school. At the annual wrestling banquet, trophies were awarded to the outstanding wrestlers. Norm Staub received the award for Quickest Pin ; Ted Valenti earned the Most Takedowns trophy; and Eric Dellapina walked away with both the Headhunter and Most Pins trophies. A P„TI _______ A.
