Text from Pages 1 - 192 of the 1974 volume:

Life so they say is but a game and they let it slip away. Love like the autumn sun should be dying but it’s only just begun. Like the twilight in the road up ahead They don't see just where we’re going, And all the secrets in the universe Whisper in our ears ami all the years will come and go And take us up, always up. We may never pass this way again. We may never pass this way again. We may never pass this way again. Dreams so they say are for the fools and they let them drift away. Peace like the silent dove should be flying but it's only just begun. Like Columbus in the olden days we must gather all our courage Sail our ships out on the open sea. Cast away our fears and all the years will come and go And take us up, always up. So 1 wanna laugh while the laughing is easy I wanna cry if it makes it worthwhile. I may never pass this way again. That’s why 1 want it with you. Cause you make me feel like I’m more than a friend Like I’m the journey anil you’re the journey’s end That why I want it with you. We ma never pass this way again. We may never pass this way again. We max never pass this way again. 3 Sr A w 6 MU MARY ANDERSON-Band 1,2,3,4; Rifle Club 1; Library Club 2,3,1 NELSON ANDERSON—(Sherman) French Club 1,2; Sportsmen club 3; Band 1,2,3.1. In traditional sytle, the 300-voice strong choruses presented their Christmas and Spring concerts-huge successes-plus several assemblies during the year. Mr. Morgan acquiesced to | erforming many contemporary selections suggested by the chorus members; and. while still keeping the standards high, added these to the spring concert everyone seemed pleased. Another added feature of the concerts was the addition of soloists Darcy Bartins and Bill Medved. Chairman Joe Klimchak of the School and Community committee and Chairlady Mary Conley of the Philosophy committee were two of the faculty leaders in the evaluation. The Principal Speaks Following months.of preparation, West Allegheny Senior High School has finally witnessed and experienced the 1973-1974 Middle States Evaluation. Our excellent staff, with the encouragement of School Board Members and Administrators, completed the necessary professional preparation. The Visiting Team reviewed and either agreed or disagreed on the many items to be checked throughout the numerous criteria forms. Committee Members also had numerous conversations with both students and faculty. Teachers were observed in regular classroom settings. Conferences with Administrators, Department Chairmen and Counselors were scheduled, thus providing some insight to our strengths as well as our needs. A Middle States Evaluation is required every 10 years, primarily to continue membership as an accredited high school. Accreditation follows a favorable report submitted by the Visiting Committee Chairman. The Chairman’s report is developed with numerous recommendations may entail an outlay of large sums of money, but yet a recommendation may simply involve a re-organization of a specific program. Several months following the evaluation, the Commission submits, in writing, the opinions and findings of the Visiting Committee. This printed document is sent to the Senior High School Principal. At this point, we begin to adjust or implement the changes and improvements recommended to improve our educational program. The traditional spring and autumn picnics were held at Settlers Cabin Park. The members sold Rex and Bright of America products to raise funds for the clubs many activities, including the annual Mardi Gras lunch, the showing of the movie Clown” to the French club and French classes, and a singalong evening at Mad Anthony’s Restaurant. The club also saw the movies Papillon” and The Three Musketeers.” The latter was followed by a dinner at Weinstein’s in Squirrel Hill. The club donated approximately $100 wrorth of merchandise to West Allegheny in the form of library volumes and a cafe table for the language room. Throughout the year members received such favors as French candy and notepads and pens at various meetings. A raffle was also held in which a portable clock radio was given away. The gentleman behind the scene in all these functions has been the club advisor, Mr. Richard Melnick. MARDI GRAS LUNCH The second annual West Allegheny French Trip was an overwhelming success. This year 15 students and Mr Melnick departed from Greater Pittsburgh International Airport on Friday, April 5. The flight via New York, Geneva and Zurich, Switzerland, arrived in Paris the following day. A three-day stay in Paris included thorough tours of all Paris’ Monuments, a boat cruise on the Seine, an evening at a discotheque in the student quarter, and various independent activities. A two-day stay in Nimes, the French Rome,” brought tours of various ancient edifices, including a Roman aqueduct, a colli-seum, and a medieval winery that is still in operation today. The next link in the trip to France was a three-day visit to Nice on the Riveria. While staying in Nice, the group took motorcoach to Monaco, an independent principality and highlight of the coast. The final day of the tour brought an unexpected ride through the French Alps to Geneva. Switzerland. The bus tour, passing through the various villages in the Alps and the winter sports havens, including Grenoble, France, ended late in the afternoon at Geneva Airport in time for the flight to New York. The connecting flight to Pittsburgh arrived home at 11:30 P.M. on Saturday, April 13. For the travelers-Barb Cook, Jan Chauvet, Susy Dalby, Gail Niemeyer, Mary Margaret Thomas. Darrell Underwood, Frank Wade, Mark Stickley, Steve Ross, Diane Yecko, Bob Quinn, Tim Miller, Chuck Dempe, Glen Renee, and Melissa Swisher—the trip was a great experience. The nine and one-half days were successfully crammed with activity. This success must be substantially credited to the efforts of W.A.’s own tourguide of France, Monsieur Richard Melnick. I came to the U.S. on December 23, 1973. I’m nineteen years old. I was born in the city of Fortaleza. My birthdate is January 30, 1955. My parents are both school teachers. My father teaches high school history; my mother teaches handicapped children. I have three sisters and two brothers. My older brother was an exchange student last year in California. I enjoy living in the U.S. I have learned many things here. Before I came to the U.S. I had participated in many sports events in many cities throughout my country. I have made many friends from all walks of life. Because of my desire to enrich my life, I applied to become an exchange student In the U.S. I’ve engaged in many different activities, but my greatest experience is learning the English language. The sports program in my school has occupied much of my time. Traveling to Hawaii, California, Michigan and Delaware has helped me learn more about the U.S. I expect to be able to enter college in September to major in physical education. After graduation from college, I plan to pursue a career in the sports world. If I’m not able to stay in the U.S. to go to college. I’ll return to Brazil. But not to my home city. I really don’t know what the future holds for me. -Jorge Rodrigues- FUTURE NURSES of AMERICA Above: K. Thomas, Mrs. Yanfcel (advisor), S. Schiff, L. Perrard, R. Beal. Absent: B. Brazen. C. Hilker, E. While all contributed, a few individuals excelled-namely, Frank Wade with his technical skills; Bob Frank and Darlene Wieczorek with their superb advertising campaign; and Art Par-fitt with his never-ending wit. As in all projects, the concluding efforts are sometimes the most challenging The 1974 ALLEGHENIAN was no different. We started with a new sponsor and many new ideas. Our first changes were to return the name of our newspaper to West Al-Lites and to alter the jmper’s page dimensions. We also endorsed a different name for our yearbook ALLEGHENIAN instead of the former title ALLEGHANIAN. Several innovations in the 1974 yearbook are highlighted by forty-eight color-stock pages, four pages containing color photographs and special-effect photography. Among our most notable achievements were a fantastic $2,000 Advertising campaign and a total sales figure surpassing 700 volumes. Wc the 1974 Journalism staff thank the Student Body for supporting your yearbook. We hope you have 184 pages of enjoyable viewing and reminiscing. The air was heavy and its fragrance smelled of rotted wood. I stopped a moment, but the wheezing of my pursuer’s breathing could still be heard. The soft, cold grass under my feet soon turned to mush of the old dirt road. The tenseness was building inside of me My breath was short. I felt I could not go any further My whole body acned as 1 gasped for breath. He grabbed me by the arm and I knew I hadn’t made it. His voice echoed in my ears as he puffed, Your’re It.” SILENT RHYTHM FLOWS” by Linda McCoy Hauntingly beautiful and mysterious, the glittering white plain is stretched endlessly out beyond me. It is night, and the only light comes from the glittering Aurora Boreali . fingering down from the zenith to the horizon like a shimmering curtain, and throwing rainbow shadows on the crystal snow. Walking is such slow tedious work. I seem to be encased in layers of frozen fur and leather. It seems as though tiredness had hardened my muscles and bones into heavy, stiff load. Sleep. I have to sleep..... When I wake, dawn is tingling the horizon with tiny licks of red flame. I feel warm, really warmer than I should in this bitter cold. My limbs are stiff, I have to stretch. My right hand touches something solid. There was nothing here when 1 lay down. A new strange fear leaps up in me. and I have to yank myself around. Before me is a mammoth igloo, a huge palaeed dome cut out of ice. There is something compelling about this place. I feel I have The door is a round crawl hole, hanging curtained with icicles which crack and tinkle to the ground as I crawl through. The light is dim inside, like a purplish water color glaze. Huge, bright dusters of rainbow sparks dazzle out at me. I approach with widened eyes. Trees . . . trees . . with silver l ark and gilted leaves. Trees whose blossoms are molded gems. Emeralds, rubies, sapphires. All crackling with radiant light. I can feel electricity in the air run through me. Another door. The second door. Electric sensations increase. The light is brighter here; the change is blinding at first. As I adjust, I see that I am encircled by a ring of strangely silent animals. Unicorns . . unicorns with brilliant white hides like the outside snows, horns and hooves of polished jade. Their black eyes glitter with strange intensity. They part and form a path for me to the door. I am inside the innermost circle. My body is tense, almost snapping with yet increased electricity. The light is blinding and intense, concentrated white yet brilliance. My oj-es. It takes so long to adjust. When I can look around again I see a huge diamond hanging by a thin gold thread from the ceiling. It spins slowly around, its thousand facets smashing colored bits of light against the white walls. Spinning, spinning. I cannot tear my eyes away. Spinning. Can not move. Dizzy. Spinning . . . 1,1 am hypnotized. 99 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIET CHARACTER but it's. not often talked about . . Character is not found wily in certain special people. It may just be facing up to the responsibility we have to ourselves-to strive to be the best we can or to try to improve what we are. It takes a person who possesses character to bear responsibility. And it is the responsible person who becomes a leader. That is why wc must be sure to preserve character. LEADERSHIP Leadership b one of the most valuable traits any one human being can possess. To l e a leader, one must, above all. I honest. A leader must also be able to make decisions promptly but still be able to accept suggestions from others A leader must display enthusiasm and sincerity about what he is doing. A leader msut also possess sound judgment and a sense of justice to insure the impartiality of his decisions. One must be ready to sacrifice himself for his followers. Leadership is not inborn; it must be. cultivated. Everyone has the potential of being a leader. SCHOLARSHIP How often do you hear about an all-star Scholar or when was the last time you read in finals? But. even though it b under-rated, Scholarship is the main purpose of our schools. Its not just the grade, for grades are just an incentive. What we need to do is to open our minds to the various fields that are around us. SERVICE There are many kinds of sendee. Service to country, service to God or sendee to community arc just a few But perhaps the most important kind of service there is is self-service. It means literally to serve yourself, not expecting others to do things for you or work out your problems. (1) Be self-sufficient and not always leeching. (2) Learn everything possible. Knowledge can never be taken away from you. (3) Have self-con-fidcnce and the problem is half licked. WALKERS RAISE OVER $2000 On March 31, 1974, thousands of walkers young and old from all over the Pittsburgh area met at Three Rivers Stadium for the annual March of Dimes Walkathon. This twenty-mile walk provided funds needed in the fight to prevent birth defects. Each walker received a sponsor sheet on which he wrote down the names of sponsors who pledged a per mile contribution for each of those long 20 miles. The walk began at Three Rivers Stadium at 8:00 in the morning on a rainy, cold Sunday. There were eight check points on the walk route where the sponsor sheet was stamped to verify the distance traveled. At some of the check points refreshments were supplied for the walkers, and always army first aid trucks were available for those who needed them. Poop-out wagons traveled along the walk route to pick up those who faltered. The walk terminated at Three Rivers Stadium where hot dogs and soft drinks were supplied for the tired, but gratified walkers. West Allegheny had a number of students who walked the entire 20 mile course. Fastest times were recorded by Rich Bui, Wally Herrick, and Robert Quinn, who completed their WALK (run) in a little more than Vh hours. 112 That’s why I want it with you, cause you make me feel like I’m 113 Lunch break -Center of W.A. socializing: BEFORE DURING: going, going, . gone! Teaching the finest aspects of English literature, Miss Conley bestowed upon her students an exposure to Literatures' great authors. Who will ever forget the classes dedicated to the study of Shakespeare’s HAMLET or Dickens’ A TALE OF TWO CITIES. While classics were the course of study, digressions were made into modern prose, poetry, and most often, practical English. Recall especially those investigative processes that culminated in that traditional project-RESEARCH PAPERS. Serving her students beyond the doors of the classroom brought Miss Conley during her forty years of teaching into such extracurricular adventures as Senior Class advisor and play director. Student Council advisor, and sponsor of the cherished Senior trip to Washington, D.C. Senior hall will certainly seem a little dimmer without her pleasant, smiling face. Miss Conley will long be remembered by the students of West Allegheny High, and her memory will be treasured by all who have been exposed to her sincerely dedicated teaching for the past four decades.
