Lites, the school newspaper. anian. 2 Foreword One hundred and seventy-nine members of the West Allegheny community will have fond memories of June 2, 19? i It was Graduation Day for the class of 71, the culmination of twelve long arduous years. Many will not be able to remember when they first trod into their first school room as tiny first graders, and then all the events that led to their final great day. To ensure that their final year will not be forgotten, we offer the 71 Alleghanian to the graduates. May it serve as a reminder to them in the years to come of their final year at West Allegheny. Fred's not bored. He's just looking for his lost contact lens. An innovation of WA, styles for the girls to fit taste and comfort. Margie, Joni, and Jackie are typical. Jim Stilley couldn't wait for his hair to grow, he had to borrow a wig. About April Bob Medved was still wondering about graduation. Can't you see I left my wallet home! Swig puts on a catty grin for the audience of Alice in Wonderland. Amy shows the proper modeling technique! New NHS members and parents are all smiles on the day of induction. What can't you learn in school today? The chuckles are over either an amusing story or the fact the Al-Lites did eventually get published. 7 Waiting for the players to appear. 9 Samson's hair gave him strenth, Dave's—brain power. A perfect score in the shop classes, no fingers lost. Parents wait for the graduates after commencement. Physical education classes were just that, quite physical. The camera interests that Hootenany club more than the music. The stage is the proper setting for reading for a part in Mr. Sweitzer's plays. Susie Logan does her thing when the minorettes were featured at the games. It is much more fun when one does it right. A familiar figure, Sarah collecting for lunch. Ken Boustead's first question as competitor in Gymkhona, 'How do you get this thing started? Ken, incidentally was the winner. ADMINISTRATION Forty-one teachers were on the West Allehgeny faculty. Of this number twenty-seven were men. Receiving their degrees at a variety of colleges and universities, they represented numerous fields While teaching subjects ranging from math and science to business and music, they also served as sponsors of WA's clubs and organizations. is Principal Mr. John T. Ferber has completed his third year as principal of the Senior High. Mr. Ferber attended Duquesne University for his undergraduate work in Public School Music. He later served as Music Supervisor of band, orchestra, and chorus at Braddock School District. Prior to coming to West Allegheny, Mr. Ferber was the principal of Braddock Junior High School. Superintendent Dr. John A. Schriker is the Superintendent of the West Allegheny School District. He earned his Master of Education and his Doctorate of Education at the University of Pittsburgh. One-hundred-one seniors, or fifty-six percent of the class, expressed a desire to continue their education. Of these, seventy two were accepted at a college or university, twenty-five enrolled in some type of business or trade school, and four members of the class decided to enter the nursing field. This compares quite favorably with previous classes at WA. 25 Executive Committee: Janet Kessler, Carol Nalesnick, Penny Ceney, Ginger Lewis, Amy Willy, Dave Swoager, Vice President, Crystal Davis, Betty Dodds, Secretary-Treasurer, Fred Daniel, Greg Daniels, President, Chris Schnatterly, Rita Chauvet, Mike Lah. They chose from the three types of curriculum, academic, commercial, or general, of from a combination of the three. Within their respective fields, the students could elect numerous subjects. Electives included foreign languages, maths and sciences, or such activities as chorus and band. As juniors, qualified students had an opportunity to attend Parkway West Area Technical School. These choices gave WA's underclassmen a chance to develop the certain educational area that interested them most. si Class of '72 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Row 1; Tim Hanna—President, Frank Williams—Vice-President, Ann Schnatterlv—Secretary, Mark Mc-Murray—Treasurer Row 2; Rich Mehalic, Dennis Ceyrolles, Cary Lauderbaugh, Tom Ritson, Bob Miller Row 3; Patty Ward Wendv McCarthy, Ellen Zirwas, Susie Linn, Kathi Frank Among the most successful fund raising campaigns of the Juniors was the Christmas Card Sale. West Allegheny offered the student a variety. The marching band, accompanied by the majorettes and In-dianettes, performed at football games and parades. The concert band presented both a winter and a spring concert. The choruses represented another musical activity. They sang to capacity houses both at a Christmas Concert, as well as a Spring Concert. Participants in these groups had an opportunity to compete for positions with various area, district and regional groups. Carrying out the motif was a draw bridge entrance, Excalibur stuck in a huge rock, a castle at one end of the gym, and a medieval coronation platform at the other. The decorations were completed with the canopy-type effect of the gold and white ceiling. Entertainment for the Prom was provided by the Moments. The Post-Prom began with a buffet style luncheon. Majorettes Head WA Majorettes—Becky Crimm, Nancy Work Feature Twirler—Kathy Preniczky The Majorettes were an active faction of the WA band. They marched with the band and performed routines at half time shows as well as in pep assemblies and concerts. They hosted majorettes from several schools in a majorette clinic. This year, 24 girls, sporting new red and white uniforms, appeared with the WA band with Carol Nalesnick and Susan Strader as heads. The girls who were chosen the previous spring, were privately trained by Mrs. Sandra Zastawa, a dance instructor. In August, they attended band camp at Thiel College for a week. About 25 different organizations were created to satisfy varied interests. These interests included hunting and fishing, marksmanship, electronics, foreign cultures, teaching, science, music, literature and art, among others. One of the largest clubs was the sportsman club, which was divided, by class, into three groups. The club's activities included contests and a game dinner. The French and Spanish clubs were also very active, taking many field trips throughout the year. The Drama department, including the Drama and Speech clubs, presented many plays, including a Christmas play and a children's theater production. tot Mr. Johnson. R. Beal, C. Boling, M. Malinosky, P. The football team was winless and the basketball team finished with a disappointing record of 2 wins and 19 losses. Although the teams generally did badly, many individuals excelled in athletic competition. A WA golfer won the W.P.I.A.L. individual golf championship. The worst loss was the Carlynton who dumped W.A. by a 50-6 score. The long season ended for the W.A. Indians as Yough won 27-12. The seasons record read 0 wins 0 ties, and 9 losses.
