The Class of 57 first joined together at the junior high in 1951 as the seventh grade. It then consisted of 175 members. Since that time, the class has shown its initiative, ambition, and willingness to work and to cooperate with others in every activity that it undertook. When they graduated from ninth grade, only 164 members remained to enter senior high school. Upon entering their Sophomore year, they elected George Mayoras as their president, and immediately began plans for the annual Soph Hop, the theme of which was Winter Wonderland. Another activity, which the class introduced as Sophomores, was the Bon Fire Pep Rally held the night before a football game, to try to promote school spirit. It was the first of its kind in West Allegheny. The class got off to a good start again in their junior year. After re-electing George as president, plans were made for a successful Sadie Hawkins Dance. Next they managed the one and only Tonidale Day at the Tonidale Gas Station. Their class play, Meet Corliss Archer, turned out to be a booming success. Next on the agenda was the prom, called Stairway to the Stars. The professional entertainment hired for the post-prom party made it the most original ever to be held in the high school. When the class became Seniors, all the qualities they possessed in seventh grade were still in full force. They began their Senior year by electing jan Cummings as president, and by the more than just successful operation of the concession stand at the football games. They not only sold hot dogs and pop, but they tried selling Bar-B-Q's, and it worked out very well. The annual magazine sale also went rather well. Their Senior Class Play, Off the Track, was a bit different than any other play presented at West Allegheny. As Seniors, the students converted the Washington-New York trip back to just a Washington trip. Sixty-eight members of the class took the long-awaited journey to the nation's Capitol. Baccalaureate services were held on May 19 with several local ministers as guest speakers. As a final gesture, the Class of '57 held their commencement exercises on May 22.
