You are experi- encing, perhaps, two conflicting emotions as your grad- C. R.Cob1emz uation day approaches, one of joy and gladness over the successful completion of twelve years of formal educationg the other of regret and sadness over the breaking forever of class unity and friendship which have grown during the years of working and playing together. From now on you will be more or less on your own, - to make your own decisions,to plan your own way of life, to determine your own attitudes and responses to the great currents of human endeavors which will inevitably beat upon you. It is our hope that your high school course of study, the influence of your teachers and your own increasing maturity have given you the wisdom, the in- sight and the purpose to make wise choices and to so conduct yourselves that your lives may be examples for good to other and reflect honor and credit not only upon yourselves but upon the community and school responsible for your education. When I was a student in high school, I ran across a quotation which has meant much to me and which you, too, may like. I think' its authorshipis cred- ited to Longfellow and goes like this: Live noble lives, as you may in whatever circumstances of life you may find yourselves, so that your epitaph maybe that of Euripides: 'This monument does not make thee famous, O. Euripides, but thou makest this monument fa- mous', Sincerely yours, C. R. Coblentz Dear Seniors, You are to be congratulated on the fine work you have done on your 1953-54 annual. Through your tireless and cooperative efforts you have built, within these covers, lasting memories of the many happy and worthwhile experiences you have shared while here in school. lt has often been said, Life is what you make of it. These words are es- pecially true inafree land such as ours. I sincerely hope that each of you will endeavor to live a full and useful adult life. I have enjoyed working with each of you for these Leilon Mclntire past five years. One of the many rewards in the field of educationis seeing young people, such as yourselves, grow up to become fine citizens in our community. I wish youmuch success and happiness in the future and I thank all of you for the superior leadership you, as seniors, have given to our school: Sincerely, - Leilon Mclntire if ,114 1' In the memory of Robert Hawley, our beloved classmate, who passed away November 19525 We the seniors of 1954 commemorate this book. 8 SENW HS lnsunuqnwna-an-.9 1-vulnhlhnnnnp-qu an 4. J, , CLASS HISTORY As our freshman class started out in 1950 on the ascent up the ladder to our graduation day, we found we were a group of 34 members. They were: Bill Allison, Richard Bowser, Ronny Brower, Loren Combs, Nancy Denius, Carol Dickson, Marilyn Eubanks, Jerry French, Barbara Fritzsche, Connie Gardner, Alice Habekost, Ralph Habekost, Gene Hamm, Bob Hawley, Curtis Hendrickson, Janet Klepinger, Vonine Klep- inger, Junior Madewell, Bob Mefford, Loretta Miller, Danny Reboulet, Nelson Riege, Frances Rike, Jim Robbins, Ronny Sakola, Bill Shafer, Glady Shafer, Helen Sizemore, Kenny Slorp, Phyllis Unger, Suzanne Webb, Joe Wethington, Bill Wherley. We added Bill Izor the second semester of our freshman year. Our class sponsor was Mr. Mclntire, and our class officers were: President, Jim Robbins, Vice- President, Ronny Brower, Secretary and Treasurer, Nancy Denius. ln the fall, our class had a Halloween Party at which an enjoyable time was had by all. As our year was coming to a close, we had our last party which was a wiener roast. Well, as we started up another rung of the ladder, we found we had lost Curtis Hendrickson, but had gained Dave Castor, JudaClemmons, Gwen Dickson, Fayrene Gooch, and Kay Miller. We then had 38 members with us. Our class sponsor was Miss Woolf, and our class officers were: Pres- Phyllis Unger, Sec- ideflfi Suzanne Webb, Vice-President, retaryg Jerry French, and Treasurer, Bill Izor. When the Sophomore year got underway, we started the initiating of the freshman class. We had a Christmas Dance at which all ofthe classmates had an enjoyable time despite a very deep snow. We also had an exchange of gifts. As the year was comingto an end we ordered our class rings and were to get them at the beginning of the Junior year. On September 6th, school opened and we were ready to climb up another rung of the ladder. We started our Junior year with 30members. We found we had lost: Dave Castor, This page sponsored by: Compliments of TWIN VALL EY NEWS West Alexandria, Ohio 10 Connie Gardner, Fayrene Gooch, Kay Miller, Frances Rike, and Joe Wethington, but we gained another memberg Lois Chambers. Our class sponsor was Mr. Shaw and our class officers were: President, Bill Izor, Vice-President, Suzanne Webb, Secretary, Gwen Dickson, and Treasurer, Vonine Klepinger. As our Junior year began we found that we had alot of work to do. First, we got our class rings about two weeks after we got back to school. Our class then decided to buyapopcornpopper for the school, as it was now basket- ball season and we were going to sell refreshments at our home games. Our class sold magazine subscriptions to make money for our Junior and Senior Reception which was held at the Leland Hotel in Richmond, Indiana. It was now nearing the end ofour Junior year and we lost one of our class mem- bers by death. He was Bob Hawley. Two others, Junior Madewell and Bill Wherely dropped out. Once again we all were back together on September Znd, 1953, to start up the last rung of the ladder. We found we had 29 members as Ronny Brower had dropped out at the end of our Junior year. Then, early in our Senior year we lost two more students. They were Bill Shafer and Bill Al- lison. Our class sponsor was Mr. Shaw and our class offi- cers were: Presidentg Carol Dickson, Vice-Presidentg Jim Robbins, Secretary, Lois Chambers, and Treasurer, Bill lzor. At the start of our Senior year, we had our graduation pictures taken at The Osborne Studios at Middletown, Ohio. Then we ordered our announcements and thank-you cards. We also sold license plates which had Bulldogs on them. Thenwe received our class pictures of which we were very proud. We are now looking forward to our Senior Class Play and also our Junior and Senior Reception. We have ordered our caps and gowns which we will use in Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises. We are all looking forward to a bright and successful future. X, 'i ...q Af , fr Q,.J a OK... ,WN T, A. . t , XY? ff! 1 'J 'il E ,if . ' I, .,,, ,f A .. G., M VI, sw ,,.,f YN 3 N' if ' 1 Q-3 H 5? We were Y given things to do. That night they gave us a party. This is a tradition that all Sophomores give the new Fresh- man class. Next year we get our fun. The subjects we have this year are: English, algebra or math, home economics or agriculture, science, general business, gym, and a choice of art, band, or chorus. We have two new pupils in our room. They are Jean Linderman and Paul Hofacker. Our total enrollment is now 44. At Christmas time we exchanged names and pupils received gifts. We decided on having class dues of 10gt per month. We are very happy that four boys from our room made the first five on the Jr. High basketball team. They are: Ronnie Riege, Fred Brower, Bill Riley, and Tom Jones. There were also six boys that played football. They were: Ronnie Riege, Tom Jones, Bill Riley, Jim Babington, Ralph Simmons, and Marvin Whited. We are really enjoying our first year of high school life, as we are kept busy with our school work, athletic events, school parties and dances. This concludes the Freshman History. They are as fol- lows: President, Robert Hack, Vice President, Charlene Phillipsg Secretary, Vivian Brunsg Treasurer, Kenneth Stammang Reporters, Wesley Brock and Marilyn Meyer, Student Council, Tommy Miller and Joyce Bellows. Our treasurer, Kenneth Stammen, moved. Our new treasurer is Mike Koeller, Our director is Mrs. McClellan. This school year the seventh grade got off to a fine start. All of us are taking math, geography, English and spelling, literature, and physical education. Many of us are taking additional courses such as music and art. The seventh grades went together and elected class officers, so they could do things together as one class instead of two. We have representatives for the West Alexandria Junior High reserve basketball squad. Ba ingtou. 56 BA D AT WCRK I L K The Music Department has managed to keep Dusy this past school year with a variety of activities. We should first like to mention our band, which has come up with some outstanding shows and concerts this year. The first show was at the County Fair. Then came the football shows, all of which were well worth seeing. The primary grades presented a Christmas program Santa's Workshop . In this little musical setting, we saw everything from dolls to toy soldiers come to life. After the primary children had performed and were visited by Santa Claus, the High School Chorus presented a program of Christmas music. The band also gave a very fine Christmas concert featuring both marching and concert style playing. The music department furnished music for most of the P. T. A. programs. Several grades sang and one group had a program of flutophones. The Ir. High had fun putting on their minstrel. Some of the money taken in at their show was used for a spring dance. The dance was a big success for all concerned. The High School Chorus sang two numbers for the World Day of Prayer. The Chorus of eighty members sang very well. The band had two combined concerts this year. One with Vandalia-Butler, which was given both here and at Butler and the other concert was given with the Eaton band at Eaton. The members of the West Alex band en- joyed playing with the other school bands. The band played for our county toumament at Richmond and put on several shows at the half of the games. During the year several dances were given and the music was furnished by The Shades of Blue this group: Judy James, Janet Klepinger, Raymon Klepinger, Sam Reynolds, Bob Barker, John Fudge, David Fudge, and Terry Karns, have made quite a name for themselves. They appeared on TV and won a trophy, and this spring they will play for the West Alex Alumni dance and also two other school alumni dances. Mr. Williams has started a Jr. Band this year composed of boys and girls from the fifth grade up. The Spring concert this year featured songs by the Jr. High girls chorus followed by a group of different numbers sung by the High School Chorus. The band then presented their half of the concert. There was a select group chosen from both the band and the chorus to be in the all county concert, which was held in our school, May 4th, This year the West Alex Band was the host for the Miami Valley Band Festival, which proved to be one df the most colorful festivals seen in these parts for many years. Baccalaureate and Commencement will still find the music students busy, Q . ' .'-'Q t T ivan, Q. t W E 9 Emo? f - f is -.wlrj fQ. 'Q args 15 .a fr! In November we began showing movies at noon inthe small auditorium, in order to raise money for different projects around school.
