HI H W 30 We at Wesl an are proud of what our school represents: iversity and freedom of the indi- vidual. Our dedication to these standards is exem lified in the liberal education Wesleyan provldes. Achievement of a truly liberal edu- cation depends on much more than just class- room experience: we are encouraged to ex- plore new and variedJields of study and we develog skills seede by our studies and nouris ed by our own intellectual growth and aspirations. It is here where the hockey player and the poet attend a guest lecture together, where the chemistry major is found immersed in discus- sion of philosophy, where the sounds of the Javanese amelan merge with the slap of a soccer hall, where the conservative and the liberal listen to each other. Here we are at Wesleyan, pulled to ether from all over the country and the wor d . . . to be dispersed to 'obs, graduate and profes- sional schools. thether we end up on the West or East coast, in Europe or wherever our feet may carry us, we have all changed during our years at Wesleyan. A rall 0r anized by the Sout A rican Action Group tSAAQ turned out to be the largest since the protests of the 19605. Parti- cularly effective were the silent rows of over 400 students through which the university trustees had to pass from Downey House to Russell House. Three hundred partici- Eated on National Day of tudent Protest voicing opposition to continued in- vestment, ending up with a candlelight vi i1 at President Camp ell's house. As a member of a 15 college consortium commltted to evaluate American business relations in South Africa, Wesleyan played an active role in a yet unresolved issue. Divestment from South Africa 47 Parties 1 48 49 50 51 52 53 On September 22 John Anderson spoke to a highly charged mass of Wesleyan students at a rally for the MondaletFerraro campaign. The enthusiasm of the students met Wesleyan's reputation as an energetic and politically active college campus. Con ressman Sam Gejdenson intro uced the former presidential candidate in a powerful opening speech. A packed '92 Theater loudly applauded Gejdenson and stood up in anticipation of Andersons's entrance. The students' excited res onse was truly reminiscent of the political fervor of Wesleyan's past. Anderson met the enthusiasm with optimism and vigor. His speech, both impresswe and moving, engendered a standing ovation when he spoke of the controversial abortion issue. The rally proved to be a hu e success and indicated that t e Wesleyan student body was not hit by the political lethargy observed at other college campuses. Wesleyan student partlcipation in the 1985 election was marked by other political activities and group organiza- tions on its campus as well as a considerably large student voter turnout. Some sup orted the move as acilitating preparation and plan- ning for the next semester. Others, however, criticized the increased red ta 6 and missed being ab e to sit in on classes before choosing as with Shop- Around. 58 3;: wx-mmcni S9 v . AUDI I v: u: j 61 Minister Louis Farrakhan s oke in the hockey rink on April 2 th. The generally non-controversial and u liftin$ speech was attended by a out 5 people and protested by as many outside. To the protesters Farrakhan represented the poorer human quali- ties of racism, anti-semitism, and sexism. To his sup orters he was a man with a valuagle message for black and white people. Budget allocation battles and a referendum in the fall, intensified by much press covera e and few death threats, also made arrakhan a symbol of the autonomy and ri hts of UIAAMA. Blacks, Jews, ang other whites did not act with great unity on whether to see Farrakhan or not. But the lone debate receding his 5 eech showed race re ations at Wes eyan still fall short of what many people think they are in more plamd times. This last concern and racism in general were discussed extensively on the day of the protest. Since April 26, the cam us has implicitl decided that the ivisions revealedtJy Farrakhan's visit will be treated best b the pas- sage of time than by furt er public discussion. Farrakhan 63 goes to ton Wesleyan Washing On April 18, one hundred and fifty students travelled to Washington, DC. to protest proposed cuts to federal financial a1d pro rams. Dure ing the COPUS eNation Coalition of Independent College and University Studenm - sponsored event, they joined students from other schools in attending rallies and meeting with their representatives to make their views heard. 65 66 The Free University Coalition , designed as a 4 day seminar in May, provided an opportunity to discuss the issues of racism, militarism, education and gender. The organizers called for construc- tive protests of certain universigl and government policies. Coinci - ing with the 15th anniversary of a student protest against the Vietnam conflict, the emphasis was laced on gaps in education on t e campus about certain issues. 67 . American Jews and others as well were disturbed and angered by the President's dec1sion. Emotions already resent in remember- mg the barbarism of the Holocaust were heightened by Reagan's readiness to 1'for ive and forget the Eorror of only 40 years ago. For the occasion, over 200 students athered in front of lin Library to honor those who d i e d i n t h e Holocaust. Through songs and readings the hi htmare was recalle and students were joined in the strength of remem- brance and the deter- mination to never forget. 71 73 ' 4'00- 74 75 76 lli '.-- MW v..- 77 ATHLETICS 79 xv. gghl IA 3 .2J' 53 V ; ' 81 82 83 85 Bill Macdermott G-Z-D WESLEYAN Tufts WESLEYAN Middlebu WESLEYA at Coast Guard Wesleyan at Hamilton Wesle an AMH RST WESLEYAN at Bowdoin WESLEYAN at Williams Wesle an TRIN Y Football Field Hockey 88 Gale Lackey U-IU Wesle an WES IELD ST. SENIORS 179 The Class of 1985 arrived at Wesleyan Universitz on a blisteringAugustda .Somedubbed it Camp Wes ast edays flew by m a whirl activity: getting to know hallmates and Classmates, registering, ptckzng out classes, and parties aplenty. We were introduced to the joys of Thursday nights at Downey, john Bts, and Sals. Parties to celebrate Wesl an's Sesquicentennial occurred throughout the year; frien ships blossomed. The effects of Pres. Reaian's bud et cuts began to take their toll. Springtime brou t the en 0f aid-blind and the beginning of protests in the inn: 0f sit-ins and bus trips to Washington. I I r ht As Sophomores, everything and everyone were changing and man; experienced sopho- more slump. The housing shortage scattered us all over campus, ollg's was the new gathering spot, aspiring doctors were suddenly theater malors. Sop omore weekend rought us together to commiserate, relax and party as a c ass. After much waiting, the Campus Centerfinally became a reality during the Class of 855 junior year. With the 0 em'ng of the Campus Center in February, however, came the closing of Downstairs owney - no more late Thursday nights at Downey or con- gregating around the TV while eating lunch. 181 w .j ' s y aN I e . ex; xv 1.6M...iI : :ku thvnnv J Wesleyan has been known as a hotbed Ofcontroversy and has had its share of controversial speakers, G. There were many issues besides arrakhan's pril appearance that were just as hotly debated, the Presidential electzon was one, divesting from corporations with holdings in South Africa was another. 182 As the controversy roared, seniors rushed around doing a myriad oftasks:filling out Senior Concentrationdforms, somefinding a thesis advisor an clarz' ing topics, others taking MCATs an LSATs and ap lying to raduate schools, and still at ers to fin a '01? and pursue a yuppy lifestyle e all t e while rejoicing in the fact that they had made it, they were SENIORSH 183 With these tasks and classes behind them tor at least delayedU, seniors celebrated the end of their college days in earnest during Senior Week. The restlessness and hope which I searched the silent trees has ebbed, the transition has been made. So many worries held me captive Ionly now I see than There was no need to be afraid. The empty spaces have been filled I'm bubbling over e New friends, new loved, all a part of me No turning back now, so much more to see Time to go forward, time to live , . . for me. Looking out at the trees now, not for answers, but filled with the desire to share happiness. Do they hear? For Savmgs We have great plans for you. Middletown NJ, Cromwell. East Hampton. East Lyme.
