Howland and Nicolson West College ' ' The admissions policy statement which best describes the objectives of the Admissions Office was passed by the Board of Trustees in June, 1974: Academic and personal excellence shall be the primary criterion for admission. From among applicants thus qualified, the Admissions Office shall seek to choose students who collectively embody a wide range of view- points, interests and talents which will capitalize on curricular and extra-curricular programs and sustain University commitments, current and projected. Consistent with these criteria, the number of women enrolled should approximate the number of men and the applicants admitted should come from diverse geographic, social, racial and religious backgrounds. This combination of individual excellence and collective diversity springs from the belief that a substantial part of the liberal education arises from the interaction of students with one another. A diverse student body is an academic asset, for it provides a richer, more chalienging, and more rewarding learning environment.
