Specialization in one, or possibly two, sports has greatly influenced this increase in athletic strength and performance though it has also caused a lack of team depth. Coupled with both an expanding athletic program and a decline in male enrollment, Wesleyan and other small New England colleges have thus declared freshmen eligible for varsity sports. Junior varsity teams have replaced the freshmen teams. This transition has created greater challenges to the freshman as well as a waning upper-classman interest in competing on a sub-varsity level. F ull at- tention and concern for this new program and the athlete will be of prime importance for coaches and athletes in years ahead. Highlights of this year have been the winning of ilLittle Three Championships in football, basket- ball, wrestling, crew and track. Joe Keller was the medalist in the Conn. Intercollegiate Tournament and in the New England Intercollegiate Tour- nament. The golf team won the Conn. Tournament and placed third in the New Englands. Joe Summa won the Bob Cousy Award as the top basketball player in New England under six feet. Jim Lynch was the third footballer in five seasons to win an NCAA Post-Craduate Scholarship. Dave Schmitt won two New England swimming events setting a record in the 400 yd. individual medley. Mike Hurd won the New England Wrestling Championship at 126 lbs. The tennis and squash teams equalled the iibest records of the past with fine seasons. Greg F orbes defied the trends of the times and earned nine varsity letters and three sets of freshman numerals, excelling in football, diving and golf. He was chosen TArgus Athlete of the Yearll and also named by the varsity letter winners as the recipient of the Aherns Award in recognition of his skill, spirit and leadership. It was a good year for the Wesleyan Athlete. Donald M. Russell, Chairman It has been four years since most of you and I en- tered Wesleyan. It has been a busy, turbulent period marked at times by external pressures impos- sible to ignore. Just being here these four years has L been a learning experience for all of us. You are now leaving; we are staying on. Your un- finished business will vary considerably; ours has more focus. As you develop your focus in the i months and years ahead, remember how much you have taught us and prepare yourself to learn as much and more. As you begin to settle on a particu- lar field, a philosophy, a point of view, remember well your exposure to so many fields, philosophies, and ideas in a place rich with opportunity and challenge. Knowing the impact you have had on Wesleyan while you were here, realize that when you return it will seem different because of the impact of those who follow. But do return. Be a supporter of this place if you feel it deserves support; criticize when that is required. We expect to learn from you in the future as we have in the past You have had special advantages at Wesleyan and you are now to be tested in terms of your willingness to. contribute to society and of your capacity to do so. I know enough of you to have full confidence that we will be justly proud of the contribution you make, each in your own way. I am confident that your four years at Wesleyan have helped prepare you to come to grips with many of the basic problems you have identified. Surely, our four years have helped identify what is important to me, and for that-for your candor, your criticism, and your friendship-I am deeply grateful. Colin C. REYNOLDS 19 MAY 1971 WE THE BLACK MEMBERS OF THE CLASS 01317211AVE UNDERGONE MANY CHANCES SINCE OUR MATRICULATION HERE AT WESLEYAN. BEGINNING WITH THE INCIDENT AT FISK HALL IN OUR FRESHMEN YEAR TO THE PRESENT, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A METAMORPHOSIS 1N- DICATIVE OF ONLY THE WESLEYAN EXPERIENCE HOWEVER, UNIQUE TO MOST BLACK PEOPLE. THIS METAMORPHOSIS HAS NOT BEEN A SIMPLE ONE, FOR ONLY HALF OF THE EN- TERING CLASS WILL LEAVE IN THE SPRING 0F '72. WITHIN THE SHORT SPAN OF FOUR YEARS WE HAVE TESTED AND RE-TESTED OUR ACA- DEMIC AND POLITICAL IDEALOGIES 1N DEALING XVITH WESLEYAN AS A PRIVATE INSTITU- TION AND THE BLACK COMMUNITY AS AN EXTENTION OF OUR BLACKNESS. IN A CONTINU AL EFFORT TO CONCEPTUALIZE OUR IDEALOGIES OUR FOUR YEARS HAVE BEEN COMPRISED OF FINAL PAPERS, EXAMS1 POLITICAL DISSENT, PEACEFUL OR OTHERWISE, AGAINST RACISM, TUTORINC BLACK PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY, SOCIAL INTERCOURSE, AND GETTING 111611. TO CAPSULIZE OUR EXPERIENCE HERE AND NOW WOULD BE AN INJUSTICE BECAUSE SO MUCH IIAS ACTUALLY TRANSPIRED. HOXVEVER, THERE HAS BEEN MEANING AND SIGNIFI- CANCE IN EACH ENDEAVOR EPIIEMERAL 0110'1111ERWISE. BUTCII AND KEVIN AATHE FIRST FRESHMEN GIRLS AT WESLEYANA WAS A PRETTY IMPRESSIVE TITLE TO MANY OF US WHEN WE FIRST ARRIVED, BUT MOST OF THE CLAMOUR AND MYSTIQUE HAS SINCE DISAPPEARED. WHAT WE FOUND UPON OUR ARRIVAL WAS IN SOME SENSE SIMILAR TO WHAT MOST FRESHMEN COLLEGE FEMALES FIND ALTHOUGH WE INPARTICULAR HAD A FEW MORE OBSTACLES THAN MOST. THERE WAS THE CONVENTIONAL SCRUTINIZATION AND EVALUATION BY THE INVER- TERATE MALES ON CAMPUS, IN TRYING TO ASCERTAIN EXACTLY WHAT THE ADMISSIONS PERSONNEL ENVISIONED AS THE WESLEYAN FEMALE. THOSE INQUISITIVE MALES MUST HAVE BEEN VERY DISCOURAGED TO FIND THE WES WOMAN' JUST DID NOT FIT INTO A STEREOTYPE, AS SHE WAS ONE OF SUCH A DIVERSIFIED GROUP. WE FOUND THAT NO PLACE HAD AS YET REALLY BEEN ESTABLISHED FOR FEMALES. AS A RESULT ALMOST ALL GIRLS, WHETHER ADMITTEDLY OR NOT, IN OUR OWN WAYS ADVOCATED WOMENAS LIB AS WE SET ABOUT TO MAKE ALL ASPECTS OF UNIVERSITY LIFE COED. MOST OF THE FEMINIST SENTIMENT WAS NOT TANGIBLE BUT STILL PRESENT. MORE OB- VIOUSLY WE SOUGHT TO BE ACCEPTED, TO SETTLE DOWN AND TO MAKE FRIENDS. THIS TASK WAS EASIER FOR SOME THAN FOR OTHERS. THOSE WITH PERSONAL COMMITTMENTS OUTSIDE OF WESLEYAN DID NOT HAVE TO CONTEND WITH THE ROAD TRIPPING SYNDROME AND OTHER INDICATIONS OF BEING ONLY SUPERFICIALLY ACCEPTED. THOSE OTHERS THAT HAD TO FACE THIS PROBLEM DISCOVERED THAT THE FRESHMEN MALES HAD SIMILAR BUT ANTIPODAL PROBLEMS. AGAIN DIFFERENT PEOPLE REACTED IN DIF- FERENT WAYS. SOME FEMALE AND MALE FRESHMEN FORMED VERY STRONG BONDS OF COMBADSHIP WHILE OTHERS ISOLATED THEMSELVES AMONG THEIR OWN SEX AND SOUGHT TO ALLEVIATE OR AT LEAST LESSEN THEIR PROBLEMS IN THAT WAY. A DICHOTOMY STILL EXISTS AT WESLEYAN AS IT DID IN THE FALL. THE DIVERSITY OF IN- DIVIDUALS IN THE STUDENT BODY FOR WHICH UNIVERSITAS WESLEYANA HAS ALWAYS ACQUIRED PRIORITY POINTS HAS ALSO BEEN ONE OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS THIS YEAR. HOPEFULLY WITH ANOTHER AND YET LARGER CLASS OF GIRLS ENTERING NEXT FALL, EX- ISTING INTERESTS WILL BE REINFORCED SO THAT NEXT YEAR UNITY WILL FURTHER DEVELOP AMONG THE FEMALE POPULATION AT WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY. In 1907 when my class entered there was no dormitory. North College had been burned down the summer before I entered and our class of about 53 men and women lived around the campus wherever we could find a bed. I and two others lived in the cellar of the DKE House for the first semester. Wesleyan of course has changed. Changed, I believe, for the better. From a narrow parochial school that I en- tered, it has become a great and leading university. However, in these last four years I have never seen a college more plagued by dissidence, confrontation and bad manners. The graduating class of ,71 deserves great credit. It has lived through a period that I believe the academic world has never seen before in the depths and lengths of its disturbances and violence. I believe that Ted Etherington was a great idealist and I honor him for his humanity. He truly was a great gentleman. I cannot help but feel, however, that some of the formulae he used to change the college scene was not too well thought out, in fact, became quite dangerous. Take for instance the formula for the admission of black students. Why did he choose to have 10$ 0f the class black? Was it because it represented a fairer es- timate in proportion of the black population? That seems to me a ridiculous way to install a new program. The criterion should be what can a small New England college campus absorb with this new element present. I think the most encouraging event in recent months has been the elevation of Colin Campbell to the presidency. In my opinion he is a sterling administrator with courage, knowledge and industry. You only have to meet him to have faith in him. Despite all the disagreeable things that have happened to Wesleyan I believe that the great bulk of the alumni including the old men are loyal and hopeful and feel as I do that there will always be a Wesleyan ofwhich to be proud. Joseph Morningstar F raternities Are fraternities dying at Wesleyan? In the traditional sense, possibly. Kappa Alpha, Gamma Psi, and Beta Theta Pi have all folded in the three years Ilve attended Wesleyan. Eclectic was forced to sell their building and grounds to the university. DKE, DTD, Psi U., KNK, and AD still survive, some better than others. F inan- cial problems plague them all as does the decrease in fraternity membership due to student desires for indi- vidiation. Fraternity eating clubs have also suerred somewhat. However, fraternities still offer one of the few areas of group social life at Wesleyan. Likewise, the lower fraternity living and eating costs make them further appealing. tThe fraternity food is also more edible and the roorhs less cold.l More important, in these days of student individiation and udoing one,s own thing , fraternities are one of the last strongholds of group action, essential for many community services. Thus, there is still a great need for fraternities. If only alumni and students would be less quick to criticize and more willing to see the strong points of fraternities, the system could again gain much of its old strength. I believe my fraternity has been an essential part of my Wesleyan education and social growth. It is still something to cling to, work for and be proud of. 71 Alumnus, administrator and friend, Mr. Edwin Ceiges, 1934 1971 Krenz Restruuramt 544 Main St. 72 ,Awh ,vTx VICTOR AUTOBODV Crestline MoteUViCmr Auto Body Vushingt0n St. Middlotmvn Pluto Glass I51 William, 34792581 73 Im Krllvr Jam Hclx-r Cuil llugln-x Alvin 6K Cynthiu .Iunu'x 7B Pat Miller Tom Ciuffridu Bob Buronof'f Peter Kalischer Larry Smith Dave Levine Miguel GOmez-Ibunoz Bill Duvis 79 Pete Seiglc John Wagner V V ig'H - . . Thomas In every University there are those among the student body who possess Characteristics ofa cen- sorable nature, but Characteristics known to everyone who has even been to classes, at parties or in the dormitories with them. This year the Olla Podrida chose these people for recognition in Alpha Sigma Sigma through an extensive poll involving careful screening of all prospects. Only the most outstanding were chosen for this coveted distinction. Absolute and unquestioned recognition is due these individuals who have so umongously devoted their energies toward this posterior. Herein we proudly present the 1971 election of students to the Alpha Sigma Sigma, Campus Hon- orary. R. Abrevaya T. Allison B. Barit J. Cherner H. Dubner P. Edleberg L. Forbes D. Grahm J. Herman N. However, it was a mira- cle that there was a 71 Olla Podrida to capture these memories. With the CBC withholding all of the $7000 usually allotted to the yearbook, we weren't sure we could afford to have a yearbook until just after mid-ycar. This late start consequently hurt us in advertising, picture coverage and staff organization. Moreover, student co-oporation was very lacking except when a reward, such as a free concert ticket, was offered. Likewise, with only 400 out of 1500 students subscribing to the $7.00 annual, possibly yearbooks are a fading tradition at Wesleyan. The 1971 Ulla Podrida is heavily indebted to a select few who made this yearbook possible. Special thanks should he given to Mr. Wm. VVasch and Mr. Philip Rockwell 0f the Alumni Dept. as well as to Mr. Ken Cunningham and Mrs. Norman Erickson ofthc 'lwreasurors Office. The help of Mr. Georgv Grccgm; Mrs. Leslie Barton, Mr. anI. Van Saun and 31m Margaret Davis likewise was a major factor in the success of the yearbook. Jov Kazickas. Jon Bork, Rob Director, Greg, Friedman. Bert XVhetstone and Joanne Young,r contributed pictures. A final thanks must he given to tho Yashica-Mat, Jim Findley and BCTI .C for enabling me to survive the crises. Despite the difficulties. constructing the yearbook has had its rewards. Unfortunately, only 160 seniors donated pictures of themselves; even fewer students completed the lopinion sheets. Though the Senior-Freshman picture idea was adapted from 1970, the 1971 white cover, advertising technique, A.S.S. fraternity and other mock pictures were innovations ad- ding to the reading enjoyment and uniqueness of this annual. A special attempt was made to cover all aspects of XVeslcyan life even if all students werelft photographed. Thus, for you select few who are reading this book, we hope your memories have been sufficently recorded. May this small artifact immortalize all those fond experiences and friendships that were created in the 1970-71 academic year for your enjoyment in years to come. John E.
