OMVVLQVLCQVVLEVLiii Since July, 1944, Wesleyan has held a com- mencement at the end of each semester owing to the war-time acceleration of the fulfillment of graduation requirements. Also for the first time the college has seen Navy men amongst its graduates. At the commencement on October 23, the inauguration of President Butterfield was an added event of note. Dr. H. A. Ingraham, hOO, president of the Board of Trustees, delivered the charge to the president, while Henry M. Wriston, ,11, head of Brown University, de- livered the principal speech. In the exercises, which were confined to one day owing to the war, honorary degrees were conferreed upon: Lane Cooper, professor of English Language and Literature at Cornell; Marjorie Hope Nicolson7 professor of English at Columbia Graduate School, and national president of Phi Beta Kappa; and Henry M. Wriston, president of Brown University. Ray- mond L. de Shelly of France also received his M.A. degree. 17 BA. degrees were also conferred. The Commencement on February 25, 1944, saw 31 students receive their B.Afs, and four men receive their M.A. degrees. In the again shortened program. no honorary degrees were conferred. Raphael Demos, associate professor of philosophy at Harvard, was Commencement speaker. The four recipients of M.A. degrees were: C. F. Baranaukas, L. P. Cecchini, S. C. Las- kowski, and A. H. Williamson.
