The Navy made its first appearance at Wesleyan in January, 1943, when a Flight Preparatory School was established here, quartered in Harriman and Clark Halls. Since then the campus has echoed with the hip, hips 0f the cadet platoon leaders as the future Naval Aviators marched to and from classes. The first battalions were picked from civilians, but since this summer the incoming cadets have been active service men, many with very distinguished rec- ords made on all of American's battlefronts. The V-S Flight Preparatory program is now being Cut out and the Cadets will all be gone by late August 1944. The Cadets have been hard workers and the administration and the officers of the school, led by Lt R. J. Lillard, the commandant 0f the school, have been able to cooperate very well. The Cadets have taken special non-cullegiate courses and their Vigorous schedule has prevented V-12 UNIT LT. HENRY C. HERGE, USNR Canmzmding them from taking any real part in college life. The V-12 program, the second Navy contingent on cam- pus, was radically different in this respect. The pro- gram was designed to train future Naval officers through a liberal education and the trainees are a1. lowed to participate as much in college activities as they can afford. The hrst group Which arrived, ap- proximately 150 in number, took over North College, where the unit has resided since. The majority of these llPlank-owners were ex-Wesleyan men who had previously enlisted in the V-1 program. The rest came mostly from the Middle WTest, the largest contingent being from Western Reserve University. New additions of trainees have come in on Novem- ber 1, 1943, and March 1, 1944, following the grade nation of many old members to Midshipman's School. As of July 1, the V-12 unit will be increased to around 350, eventually taking over both Clark and Harriman Halls from the V-S and abandoning the U. S. 5, North College. The unit is under the Command of Lt. H, C, Herge, a former educational administrator. His executive ofhcer is Lt. tjgt J. H. Gleason, a former professor at Pomona College, California. They have under- stood the problems of a liberal education very well, and Wesleyan owes them much credit for making our unit one of the best in the country. The presence of the Navy on campus has assured Wesleyan's survival through the warw-and the in. Crease in the number of V-12's will mean that the college will Continue as before to teach the basic fundamentals of a liberal education and give future Naval oEicers the benefit of the profound formative processes of college life.
