.C C C C - THE OLLA PODRIDA 1936 J, PUBLISHED By THE COLLEGE BODY WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY KENNETH ANDREWS AINSLIE A. SLODDEN EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGER F OREWORD .hhhhhhh, hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?hhhhhhhhthhhhhhhhw This Olla Podrida can record only a few of the interests of a college generation that has seen in the world outside stimulation for thought and motivation for action. It is a summary of a few years of prepara ion, of growth, and activity. Facing the impossi- bility of setting down all that makes a Wesleyan education profitable and pleasant, the editors have tried to realize the potenti- alities of accuracy and fullness in catalog- ing some of the tangible accomplishments of Wesleyan undergraduates. Seniors and underclassrnen may hold valuable in years still to materialize the records of deeds that are holding their own as the former ideals of activity men are fadirg from promi- nence land ideas and intelligence begin to assume their place in collegiate circles. THE BL 0K5 IEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE- I CLASSES ll FRATERNITIES Ill ATHLETICS IV ORGANIZATIONS V ADMINISTRATION VI FEATURES AND ADVERTISEMENTS e 4 CAT Doctor McConaughy is a president who combines a genius for college administration and its requirements for foresightedness and diplomacy with an eagerness for student and faculty cooperation that wins him almost uni- versal support. His concern for the well- being of Wesleyan's undergraduates as well as for the college's general status is evident to us and we thank him for it. This volume of the 011a Podrida is dedicated to a man who has built up over a decade of efficiency and wisdom Wesleyan's tangible and in- tangible resources to such an extent that we recognize hi m a s indispensable both as leader of the powers that be and as friend to students and student opinion. We are proud of the president. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee- NEWS SERVICE NnmN-WIUE -VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV PRESIDENT Mc CONAUOHY .1Wl1nili'i A :WIIEEIwI Faculty Club Hall Laboratory of Chemistry Olin Memorial Library Denison Terrace; Van Vlech Observatory .p 'l 1.; .;'- w . . Tr Calder, Manager EGINNING the 1935 season with a week of wet weather in which to prac- tice, the Cardinals met their first opponent e a new one to the Wesleyan schedule e the United States Coast Guard Academy. The game, played on Andrus Field in a cold, drizzling rain, proved a decided victory for the Blottmen who conquered the New Londoners by the convincing score of 27 to 0. The Visiting team was completely outplayed in a game featured by much passing. kicking, and fumbling. Wesleyan's backfleld combination of Johnson. Ketcham, Horne, and Harris worked smoothly while Burton's kicking was out- standing. After a steady drive down the field. the Cardinals scored their first touchdown early in the opening quarter, Ketcham taking the ball over the goal line. Consistent hammering through the Coast Guard defense netted two more tallies by Ketcham. and another by Clarke in the last quarter brought the final score to 27 to O The team's iirst win boded well for the rest of the season. A brilliant aerial attack, effective kicking, and good line and backfield play indicated success for the rejuvenated team. The hopes for an outstanding season were strengthened when the Wes team scored its second victory the following week over a visiting Connecticut State eleven by a close 6 to 0 score. Still fumbling and still aeriaI-minded, the Cardinals battled through a scoreless flrst half. finally making a touchdown in the last quarter on a forward pass from Johnson to O'Leary. The opposing line completely outclassed Wesleyan's forward wall and it was once more the brilliant playing of the Cardinal backfleld. led by Captain Johnson. that finally turned the tide in favor of the home team. Wesleyan's brief winning streak was broken on the next week-end when the Blottmen journeyed to Brunswick. to play against Bowdoin. The power- ful Maine eleven, making use of costly Wesleyan errors, piled up point after Our H u mz'ml Fiffu'll ACTION point to win by an overwhelming 33 to 0 score. The Cardinal team showed a strong opening offense and early in the game had the ball on Bowdoin's ten yard line, only to lose it on an incompleted pass. From then on the Polar Bears made steady long gains through the Wes defense until in the second quarter, they made their first tally. Poor blocking, weak tackling, and an aerial attack that found the Bowdoin team prepared all contributed to the Cardinal's defeat. It was a disheartening loss and one which banished any hopes for an undefeated season. The Haverford game at Middletown one week later saw the usual dance week-end let-down. The spirited visiting team unleashed a strong passing at- tack to overcome the Cardinals 13 to 7, thus avenging the 21-7 drubbing given them last year, The Blottmen were considerably hampered by injuries with Johnson, Horne, Ketcham, Coultas, and Jones all out for practically the whole game. Neither team scored until the hnal period when the visitors made a touch- down on the flrst play, then followed this up with another a few minutes later. Wesleyan then getting the ball, a run by Fillback, two Burton to Hultine passes brought the ball to the Haverford two yard line. Burton then rushed through center to score the Cardinal's only touchdown. Although the game was marked by rather weak playing, Hultine, Voegelin, and especially Burton distinguished themselves. Next on the schedule was the first Little Three game which took place at Amherst. Although the Sabrinas were heavy favorites we remembered hope- fully that it was almost an impossibility to predict With any certainty the out- come of a Little Three contest. Nevertheless. the Blottmen were overcome, 26 to 0. It was a disappointing loss since the Cardinals deiinitely outplayed the Amherst eleven, both offensively and defensively for the first half of the game. then unable to keep up their pace, succumbed to the powerful opposing attack. The Wesmen opened strong, and with smooth-working running and aerial attacks they piled up several first downs, coming near scoring once or twice in Olu' IIlHnlrca' Sixlz't'll JOHNSON the first quarter. They made their best scoring bid, however, in the second period, when, after runs by Home and Fillback. the ball was on the opponent's eighteen yard line. A Johnson to O'Leary to Burton pass netted twelve more yards, following which Johnson pushed through for two more. Here the drive was stopped by a strong Amherst line. The Lord Jeffs made their first tally in the third quarter after which a passing attack once more brought the Car- dinals within scoring power. With only two yards to go O'Leary was stopped on a fourth down. The last period found the Sabrinas complete masters of the field with a resulting hnal score of 26 to 0. On the following week-cnd the most dramatic and spectacular game of the season was played on Andrus Field. when the Wesmen, entering the game heavy favorites to lose, downed a strong Trinity team which had been unde- feated for two seasons. This thrilling upset marked what was for Wesleyan the most well-played contest of the season. Possibly spurred on by the invasion of the Wesleyan premises by Trinity supporters at two o'clock Saturday morn- ing, the eleven played with defensive and offensive brilliance to win 9-7, scoring a touchdown and held goal where they were not expected by their opponents to score at all. The team worked together with comparative flawlessness and Burton was particularly outstanding The win was not a lucky one: Trinity was outplayed in almost every way except possibly line-playi On November 9th, in spite of the previous week's inspiration got from beating Trinity, Wesleyan faced Williams' powerful club with undisguised foreboding. But as the Williams' captain is reported to have said, HWesleyan teams are never outfought , and the defeatist attitude did not mar the spirit of the men who had to face the eleven which had held Princeton to one touch- down. The usual thing happened: the first two quarters were a close-fought battle, but the weight of reserves began to tell just before the half. At the final whistle, Williams had run up 41 points. The final game of the season was played at Rochester where the Blottmen surpassed the Yellow Jacket team in every department of the game to win by 0m Hnmlml Svu-nlrm IMPASSE the score of 34 to O. The Wesleyan team demonstrated a power-aerial attack and an equally powerful defense which accounted for the interception of nu- merous Rochester passes The hrst score came early in the opening quarter when 2 Burton to Hultine to Home pass was successfully completed. On the extra point Burton missed the only conversion of the game. A second touchdown came in the next quarter when O'Leary, receiving a pass from Burton. crossed the goal line. Another Burton t0 O'Leary pass accounted for the third tally in the first part of the second half. This was followed by two more touch- downs in the final period bringing the total score to 34 to 0. K, Burton. Caplain R. Galloway, Manager HAVING lost but a few players through graduation, the basketball team embarked upon its 1936-37 season with unusually high hopes. Their optimism was well-founded, for the Lashmen completed their schedule with a record of ten wins and four defeats as well as a tie for second place in the Little Three competition. A well-balanced squad. led by Captain Kemper Burton. and made up of veterans and excellent new material cooperated very well in making the season as successful as it was. The opening game with Stroudsburg Teachers' College did not bode well for the Cardinals. A new opponent on the Wesleyan schedule, the visiting team played in top-notch form to outclass the Wesmen by a 43-32 score. A nine game winning streak, however, more than made up for this initial defeat. The opening Victory was won from a visiting Brown team by the narrow margin of 35 to 34. The playing was fast and rough throughout and was decided only in the last few seconds to play when Burton sank a foul shot. Klinger and Sonstroem were important factors in the Wesleyan scoring attack. The team next travelled to New London where it won an easy 38-31 vic- tory from the Coast Guard Academy. The Wesleyan players continued to display the form showed in their previous tilt with Brown and never lost the lead throughout the contest. Sonstroem and Klinger again led in the scoring attack. Following Christmas recess the Lashmen chalked up a third win by over- coming Connecticut State in a fast, rough and tumble game. After trailing behind during the whole nrst half, the Wesleyan five, getting adapted to the Storrsmen's zone defense, gained the upper hand in the last part of the battle to win by a 45-35 score. The fourth straight win was scored on the home court when the Cardinal quintet shut out Trinity by the score of 33 to 28. The Lashmen displayed un- usually good teamwork with the result that Wesleyan. except for a brief mo- ment in each half, managed to keep a slight lead throughout the game. Klinger led in the Cardinal scoring while Havens was particularly good on the defensive. The team next journeyed to Philadelphia and vicinity where two more triumphs were scored. Showing speedy offensive work and a strong defense. the Cardinals first defeated Haverford by a 36-28 count. The game was won in the second half, when the Lashmen. led by Sonstroem and Behrens, piled up a safe lead which the opposing team was unable to overcome. Om' III! mlml TlUt'IIIy-IIJ mt The trip was made completely successful by the defeat of Swarthmore in a speedy 32 to 22 contest on the next night. With this game the Cardinal quintet reached the peak of its form for the season. Their lead was never threatened during the entire game. Sonstroem continued as the team's high scorer while Burton and Havens contributed excellent defensive work. Returning to their home court, the Redmen scored their seventh consecu- tive victory by eking out a 30-26 win over Massachusetts State. The local players missed shots consistently throughout the game, failed to follow up on shots and only in the last few minutes showed their old form, at Which time, led by Havens, they scored five points to win by a narrow margin. The eighth victim of the powerful drive was Hamilton, defeated by the Wesmen, 44 to 36. The game was filled with rough playing and it was only the steady sinking of foul shots which eventually provided the winning margin for the Cardinal team. Klinger and Sonstroem were the mainstays of the offen- sive, each of them piling up a total of thirteen points during the game By way of a ninth victory Trinity College succumbed to the Wesleyan quintet for the second time. now by a 26-21 score. A hard-fought game, it was only after trailing for nearly three-fourths of the contest that the Lashmen smashed through the Blue and Gold defenseto sink the winning shots. Klinger once more led the Wes team in scoring while Havens starred on the defensive. The Cardinals' winning streak was finally broken when the Lashmen lost to Williams by the score of 45 to 37 in the opening Little Three contest. The Ephmen managed to stay in the lead for most of the game and were never ser- iously threatened by their rivals Sonstroem and Behrens played well both offensively and defensively but the team was completely bottled up by the Wil- liams' players. This setback placed Wesleyan at the bottom in the Little Three standing, Amherst having defeated Williams previously. The Lashmen, apparently unable to cope with their Little Three oppo- nents, next lost to Amherst by a 36-25 score in a rough but unexciting battle. The Jeffmen, capitalizing on their height. speed. and formation offensive. handed out the worst defeat the Cardinals suffered during the entire season. The Wes- leyan team's drive was unimpressive, its scoring power being completely clamped on by the opposing guards. This victory incidentally broke the jinx of many years which has always defeated Amherst on the Wesleyan court. The Sabrina team next gained the Little Three title by once more over- coming the Cardinals, this time by a 716-30 count. Although the Jeffmen had piled up a substantial ten point lead by the end of the nrst half, they faced in the last half a revived outfit which pressed them continually until the end of the game. As in the previous contest. the tall Amherst guards hindered the Wes- leyan attack with the result that only one player, Sonstroem. scored consistently. The final game of the season showed the Lashmen back in top form as they completely outclassed Williams to win by the score of 43 to 26. This triumph marked the single Wesleyan victory in the Little Three series and placed the Cardinals in a second place tie with the Purple team. The Wesmen out- played their opponents in every department of the game and amassed a huge lead which they kept throughout the contest, Sonstroem and Seel were stars on the offensive while Burton and Behrens, playing their last games for Wes- leyan contributed good defensive work. With this victory the Cardinal quintet ended a season which. in spite of its Little Three defeats, was highly successful. With only two men likely to be lost through graduation the outlook for an even more successful schedule next year is unusually bright. Om Hu mlrml Twerlly-fmlr Kenneth J. chnan Allen W. Captain A. W. Sherman THE 1935-36 Cardinal swimming season was an outstanding one in Wesleyan swimming annals. After seven Victories the team vindicated its Yale and Amherst defeats by placing second to Brown in the New England Intercollegiate meet. On January eleventh the Cardinal swimmers returned from the M. S. C. meet with a 76-31 victory in which they captured flve hrsts. The squad lost its second meet to Yale by the score of 59-18. The highlight of the meet came in the 200 yard breast stroke when Degnan, swimming for the Cardinals. broke the N. E. I. record for the event with a time of 2:342, as compared with the old record of 2:368 which he set last year. The breast stroke was the only hrst that the home team could take, though several events were closely contested, notably the 150 yard back stroke, which Wiggin of Yale won by a margin of about a foot from Pullman of Wesleyani The following Saturday the Wesmen defeated C. S. C. in a 57-20 victory. The squad captured all nine events, and Degnan broke his own 200 breast stroke record to the time of 2:328 seconds for a record time that week. Outstanding in the meet. besides Degnan, was Tanner, who took firsts in both the 220 and 440 yard swims. Broker and Jones performed well in the dives. taking first and second respectively for the Cardinals. The McCurdymen triumphed over Worcester Tech in their fourth meet with a 58-19 victory. Captain Degnan took hrst in the 200 yard breast stroke, setting a new New England short pool record in that event by covering the distance in the time of 2233.8. Tanner swimming the 220 in 2240.4, and the medley relay team of Pullman. Degnan, and Seigle making the time of 3 :12 minutes. each set new records for the Worcester pool in those events. With Degnan shattering his own record for the third time by setting a new mark of 2231.2, the Cardinal swimming team scored a 56-21 triumph over Bowdoin the following Saturday. Two Wesleyan records also fell as the 300 yard med- ley relay team consisting of Pullman, Degnan, and Blizard, set a mark of 3:126 for that event, while Pullman swam the 150 yard back stroke in 1245.6. Om' lemlml Turuli-ui causing us to win all but the 220 event. By taking a first place in every event but the 400 yard relay race, the Wesleyan team completely outclassed the Wil- liams tankers by a convincing 54-23 score. Ken Degnan turned in the out- standing performance by lowering his own N. E. I. record in the 200 yard breast stroke to 2230.6. Broker had little difficulty in winning the dives, have ing amassed 78.43 points. In spite of the fact that they broke three pool records the Cardinal swimmers were swamped by Amherst the following Satur- day to the tune of a 53-24 score. The three records which the McCurdymen set were made by Degnan, who swam the 200 yard breast stroke in 2:33.61 by the 1245.6 time that Pullman set up in the 150 yard back stroke: and by the medley relay team of Pullman. Degnan, and Blizard, who won by a large margin in 3:14.4. The last meet was held at Trinity. and Wesleyan won by a score of 45-33, taking six out of nine events. Pullman broke the pools 150 yard back stroke record with a time of 1145.7 a missing the New England record by one second. Pullman, Degnan, and Seigle broke the pools medley relay record, and Broker and Jones captured the first and second place, respective- ly, in the diving events. In the post season New England Intercollegiate championships, held at Williams, the Wesleyan team captured second place with 25 points. Brown took first place with 37 points and Amherst third with 22. Ken Degnan won the 200 yard breast stroke race and the individual medley, in which he set a new N. E. I. S. A. record of 3:52. in addition to swimming on the medley relay team with Pullman and Seigle. which also set a new N. E. l. 8 A record of 3:106. Pullman turned in a line performance in the 150 yard back stroke With a time of 1:45 which lowered the N. E. l. S. Ar record in that event, set by Mittendorf of Yale in the Lassel pool three weeks before the event, thus completing a most brilliant aquatic season in Wesleyan's history. Later in the National Intercollegiate Meet at Yale, Captain Degnan placed second to Kasley of Michigan. who had broken the world record with 3 seconds to spare in a trial heat. to turn in the best National Wesleyan performance in swimming history and to cover the distance in the best time of his breast strok- ing career: 2:28+ for 200 yards. This last effort on Degnan's part climaxes his brilliant record of successive new low times in the New England Breast Stroke competitions. He has competed in New England and Eastern meets and his second in the Nationals represents his best time to date. but by no means indicates that he will not continue to swim and break records after graduation. The swimming season this year was extremely successful, and the success of the team is largely due to these members of the class of 1936. whose services will be missed next year. For 3 years Degnan, Broker. Jones. Pullman. Seigle, Tanner, Weisenbach have swam regularly: Coach McCurdy will have no easy task in replacing them. Om' Hnmlriil 'I'ur'uly-u'un Back row: Daniels. But there are other buildings which didn't nnd their way into the view-section e because they were finished late in the year or were not made to lend themselves readily to photographic treatment. The Temple to Squash, apostrophized endlessly this year in poem and bon mot is a red brick thing built darkly to resemble College Row. Cone sequently it cannot be photographed. for in a picture it looks like nothing more than an oversized freight car. But the Squash Racquets building, along with the gym, was finished last year. Since September, 1935. the Faculty Club has been moved to the Russell House: there is a picture of it in the front of this book, The old quarters of the store in Judd Hall have been converted to serve the Departments of Music and Psychology, and the new store has been located in the Downey House. This structure is not at this writing very beautiful on the outside, as you can see from the illustration. However. there are plans afoot among the strolling THE GRILL Om' llllmlrml Xi'lrnly-fiir DAVISON HOUSE architects and builders Who have trod our soil all year for disguising the build ing's unattractiveness with skillful camouflage. Time will be when the college union will peep out from behind masses of shrubbery and boxes of geraniums and this picture will be only a black record of temporary undress. Inside the Downey House, we will remember in those sentimental days yet to steal on us nearvalumni, were all sorts of beautiful rooms. The Grill is the chief attraction e one of its levels, the lowest and most democratic W is shown here. Upstairs is the banquet hall, the ping-pong room, the lounges. the card-room. and everywhere all is comforti One of this year's fondest memories for Wesleyan men will be of the first view of the huge green vase in the niche on the stairway leading to the second floor, and of the breathless cx- citement with which we removed the perky little cap and peered into its cavv ernous insides. And we won't forget the doubt and tentativeness with which the builders inserted doorways. then blocked them off. built walks aimlessly throughout the grounds. then got lost trying to follow them But the Downey House is seriously 3 wonderful building, made for the service of students in matters of convenience. of necessity, and of comfort. The Davison House the new and superlative infirmary e is nothing to pass by lightly. The gift of Mr, and Mrs. Davison in honor of their two sons gives Wesleyan :1 place for rest and recuperation that could not possibly be more tastefully furnished, more completely equipped, or more comfortable A TREATMENT ROOM 0w lllmilrml Surnll-xn A PATIENTS ROOM and attractive. The views shown here give the exterior, and some of the rooms inside. We shall remember the pleasure and surprise with which we hrst viewed the results of the remodelling and enlarging of the old Hubbard House. Where earlier in the year it was unpleasant to be ill, now it is a positive pleasure. Even the head nurse has succumbed to the charms of the building and now has the grippe, experiencing for herself the glories of hospitalization. In the storm of enthusiasm that rose from the student body. amazement was expressed that a person could once see Wesleyan's plant. her buildings and grounds, and then even consider enrolling somewhere else. This exaggerated reaction is indicative of the appreciation we feel for the completeness of the fa- cilities that are ours to use here today. We are convinced that Wesleyan has the finest physical equipment possible, and that her athletic plant. her library, her laboratories, her Downey and Davison Houses. bear us out in saying that not only have we a practically perfect group of buildings and arrangement of facilities, but we also have the best plant of any college of our type that we know of. Buildings are not everything a college needs. but they stand for a great deal and an adequate material outlay is essential for a college of the intangible resources of Wesleyan. To ; select the right materials, to mould and blend these into per- 1 fection requires an infinite patience and c1 skilled Craftsmanship. t The apparent simplicity of CI violin does not reveal the skill and workmanship required to give the instrument its beautiful soul- stirring tone. Todoyl good violins are being made, but they are instruments in no way deserving of comparison With the match less work of Old Masters. T here is an art in fine printing, too. It is true that in recent years Hmodern methods have been intro- duced and printers were no exception in the general trend to embrace CIny methods that cut costs and increased production.
