Invidious detraction and base calumny, which true greatness seems never to escape, have not spared us. For that reason we desire, on this very appropriate occasion, to say a few modest words about ourselves which will vindicate before the world our questioned greatness, cor- rect all erroneous opinionsc oncerning us and convince even the Freshmen of our infinite superiority over all mankind. We should like to give a particular account of all the sublime facts which constitute our glory g but as such a gigantic undertaking would require an eternity of time, a tongue of iron and cheeks of brass, none of which except the last are at our immediate command, we will content ourselves with a general statement of a few of our chief excel- lences. First, we are the Class of Eighty-eight. That in itself is an zzj71'z'a1'z'anCl suf- ficient reason why we are what we consider ourselves. The circumstance that only ourselves have been able to appreciate its force is to be accounted for by the fact that our minds alone have attained the high degree of development necessary for its comprehension. Second, we are the late Freshman class. This is a most important and significant fact. It is true that last year, because we were young and undevel- oped, our deviation from the commonplace was not so remarkable in all direc- tions as it has been since g but in one direction we did distinguish ourselves in a most extraordinary manner. The intensity of our freshness was something without a parallel, even in the annals of Wesleyan. Thus in our early youth we gained distinction where it was attainable by us and gave a striking indica- tion of what we were to be. Third, we alone of all the-classes of which history makes mention, were Sophomores without showing it. Prexy told us that it was better to be good than to be Sophomoresg and we became good, but only in appearance. In reality we are Sophomores of the rankest character, but the raging lion of Sophomority we keep chained fast, and whenever he growls feebly, which he does not do very often, we gag him with scholarships. This stupendous achievement alone is enough to place us on the topmost pinnacle of the temple of fame and secure us our everlasting renown. ' Let us simply add that we are the finest class that ever came to Wesleyan, the smartest class that ever rode a horse, the only class that Elmer truly loves, and the brightest flower of freshman possibilities. O the glorious class of Eighty-eight !-We shall never die. Never will the lustre of our fame be dimmed. The radiance of our splendor will shine far into the remotest ages and our name will reverberate through the furthest cor- ridors of Time-unless, what is most probable, continuing at our present rate of expansion we should prematurely swell up and bust ! ioui Ei T is with feelings of mingled pain and astonishment that we have p C275 , V -:ogy -of-alfwvg,-.-W. ,Ww...w,.,,,v.,ww., iw. ww .,.,y.H.Q,,..,f Q.
