'ki iitararror Sauzair2.s. +...Q N a bright Saturday morning in the fall of '83, as the college clock was striking the hour of twelve, a new class metsin Billy's recitation room E to receive their certihcates of admission and conditions. Retiring with becoming awe from the Presence, they again metin the dyopzi between North and South Colleges, here they were baptized by sprinkling, according to the Sophomoric rite, and thenceforth became members of the college, daily listening to the words of wisdom that fell from the lips 0f,Trues- dell, Tom and Abe. In a very short time they became proficient in the arts of bill-board burn- ing, doing the George Washington and of chanting the Kai Gar and Lambda Rho pzeans. - The storms of win-ter and the grinding of the long middle term could not check their enthusiasm, for, on a bleak Saturday in February, the best and last cane rush known in the history of Wesleyan left the stick in ques- tion in the hands of the plucky fresh, who had cheerfully devoted an. entire day to the enterprise, under the generalship of the mighty Flynn. A few days later, a march of twenty miles over steep hills, through mud and rain, resulted in '87 firing the cannon without the assistance of the other classes. The head-' quarters, it may be said in passing, was the fourth hall of N. C,, where the '87 gang ruled supreme. i At the beginning of Sophomore year, a committee of the class, thinkingto encourage the inexperienced youth of '88, ascertained their yell and gave'them a-few lessons gratis, their suggestions were immediately accepted by those enterprising youth. Owing, no doubt, to an exuberance of health and spirits brought about by the long summer vacation, some measures taken to mellow and ripen the immature fresh were unnecessarily harsh, but their effect was exceedingly satisfactory. 5 J ' junior year finds '87 a dignified and harmonious class. They have never been divided by those quarrels which have disgraced their associates. Of course, they cannot succeed to the place ?85 held as an athletic classg foot-ball is pre-eminently, almost exclusively, Wesleyan's game, and as their men are, on the average, younger and slenderer than those of any other class in college, they don't furnish foot-ball timber. Those members of the class, however, who have been on theeleven have done honor to themselves and their Alma Mater, the class have contributed according to their means for the support of the team, and their offer of a ,Varsity shell last spring sufhciently proves their loyalty to the athletic interests of the college. In scholarship '87 is content to maintain a high average, without the aid of phenomenally brilliant men, yet not sorry to have surpassed the boasted junior Ex. average of '86, and to have more than a fair share of mathematical ability. They have sustained no loss by death. The feeling that the members of the class entertain towards each .other may best be expressed in the words of their song--- ' We're a jolly band 'of brothers. 4235 2252 L WV 4'-'0 Q5 ww- 274 v- ww- 'o Q' wwf '0 S- 'o v' 'vw W Q' 'o Q' - 'o w- wo' 'o wf-'vw-M0 er- 'o ev- fvwfwv fo wrfffvw-:-'0v:., . 5 ' 9 9, 9' 9' 4 9 94 W '92 '-9 O, -' Q -'4W'.fibVj 'QW ,QW 'Nlnxf'-sf--xx' xl xfaxf -x .- f f f . .. xi kwa?
