But we are the peerless class of Eighty-six and it is by this name alone that the wide world knows us and recognizes our incomparable worth. Did you ever know what it is, gentle reader, to feel that the entire human race appreciates your merits? You never knew I Well, you may hnd consolation in this thought,-few, very few can know this g we may be the only persons who ever had this knowledge. We are absolutely certain that we are appreciated, because men are trying to secure our inval- uable services at this early date. lust a few weeks ago the principal of a sem- inary came to us from the verdant mountains of Vermont, and invited some members of our class to accept a position in his school with a salary of 3400.00 a year. Many more applications like this are expected daily,--this, you per- ceive, is the reward of well-doing. Self-laudation? Not a particle. We may seem egotistical to those who are not acquainted with usg but our fellow-students, no doubt, can testify to the fact that we pursue the noiseless tenor of our way with most charming verecundity. Is there a man in college, or anywhere else, who has ever heard us boast of our grand success in Mechanics or Physics, of the good fortune some of us have in making ourselves agreeable to some members of the fac- ulty? No, sir, such a man cannot be found I You know that we never show an undue assumption of superiority. ' The true spirit of our class is indicated by the motto mi ijnfa fiflld Myth, which we selected with so much .care when we were freshmen. QN. B. The time referred to, is our first year in collegej While the other classes have fixed upon their motto only as a matter of form, we chose this saying of the wise old philosopher, Isocrates, to be our battle cry and incentive to action. The marked advantage in choosing a motto with this intent will lead future classes to follow our example in this. Now what has been said must be enough to show what we are and convince everybody that Although not tough We are the stuff. We have the guff, , And that's enough. We feel sure that the other classes congratulate themselves that they have had such an example of all that is good and great before them, and we are sorry that they must soon be deprived of their excellent prototype. ' Fellow students: Our influence has done you much good while we have been with you. Let it not have less effect upon you when we are absent. We 'go forth to become philanthropists, statesmen and all that, but we shall not for- get you. You may be successful in your life-work, though you are not Eighty- six men, therefore let each one hope for the best and strive to attain to the glorious heights of fame which we shall reach.
