Base-ball has commenced to shake off its lethargy. The extreme popularity of Lawn Tennis ought to be utilized in winning for us a respectable position in the Inter-Collegiate Association. Our Glee Club, rivals of the Foot-ball Team in favor and in fame, has had a 'very successful season. In Widening the reputation of our college, they will not fail, we feel reasonably confident, in correcting also the impres- sion that this is a School of Theology. Here, too, a heavy debt has been lifted, '86 will take away but three of the club, and the prospect is bright. The Argus has even improved upon its former excellence and, in its sphere, stands among the hrst of college papers. We are proud of it. Through shame, we will not call attention to the fact that one-third of the students fail to aid it with their subscriptions. Even selfishness should prompt us to a liberal support of our own institutions. ' It is our sad duty to record the deaths of I. ,I-I. Meyerhoff and Rollin Smith of '86, and C. K. Sturgess of '88. Though cut down in early man- hood, their memory will he treasured in many hearts. Unmarked, then, by any great and striking good fortune, the year has nevertheless added another ring of solid growth to our prosperity. This is the leading college of the largest and richest denomination in this country. It should. be eminent, powerful, influential-the center and source of great intellectual and moral movements, the cynosure at least of the Methodist Church. But let us understand that it shall be what we help to make it. Only the highest degree of eyrii de corps, thoroughness and noble purpose on the part of the students, of ambition and efficiency among the Faculty, of enterprise in the Management, and of liberality from alumni and friends can make our college what every loyal son must long to see his Alma Mater. May the next OLLA PODRIDA be able to chronicle a marked advance all along the line. Putnam's Sons have published a book on 't Evolution of To-day, by Dr. Conn, and from the same pen have appeared Marine Larvae and their Relation to Adults, and The Life History of Thalassemaef' in the L' Studies from Biology series of johns Hopkins University, Some Signifi- cant Results of Modern Embriologyf' in Srz'mre,- Limits of Organic Evo- lution, in the Aww-zimfz ZVa!m'fL!z'sz'. During the winter, members of the faculty delivered before the students a very interesting series of Monday afternoon lectures upon educational topics. To the Alumni who glance over these pages, we would suggest the in- quiry whether the management of this college is as liberal and enterprising in relation to its professors as it might be. Perhaps it is. If so, then we devoutly wish that an era of prosperity may set in for the Methodist Church. Harvard, reduced to a corps of instructors merely, might be a very good school: it would not be Harvard University. It is certainly true that we have some men on our faculty who require only freedom and support to bring our col- lege into fame through their renown. And we need it. We are glad to give further publicity to the statement made at the last college dinner that The old feud between students and faculty is dying out. It is true. Nevertheless we must add that until a few more of the Christian graces find fruition in the daily life of the former, and until the latter abandon an attitude sometimes arbitrary, and abolish dark-lantern dis- cipline, the funeral baked-meats of our expiring feud will roam their na- tive pastures. The college has received no large gift this year, but by the appreciation in stocks a considerable part of our loss has been regained. - The Seney scholarships, that pregnant source of internal disorders, re- ceiving nothing but maledictions from the unfortunate majority, condemna- tion from the faculty and curses from those who should have been their dearest friends, have been withdrawn. But in this connection, while we heartily commend our nobility of soul in despising the filthy lucre, we can but advert to the meagre inducements we offer in this line to ambitious scholars. The list of our Fellowships cannot, indeed, be called large. Our prizes may confer great honor, they certainly confer little else. Among the students there is a hearty, wide-awake, Wesleyan spirit g what- ever under-graduates can do to push their college to the front our men may be depended upon to attempt.
