Up the endless stairs to awaiting roommates we came as shy freshmen, eager to Hnd out what college held for us. In the spirit of friend- liness characteristic of Wesley we were wel- comed by everyone. Before we were considered an ofhcial part of Wesley, the sophs, true to tradition, put us through the much-dreaded rat week. First the mad rush downtown, flustering all of Dover, and the haphazard purchasing of horrible two- inch green ribbons, gay colored stockings, and other ridiculous articles. Then long before dawn the unmerciful awakening as scheming upper classmen escorted us to the pajama reveille of rat exercises on the campus. Fi- nally the week of obedience ended, not with- out sighs of relief. Class organizations were formed at the first of our serious meetings. To the Student Coun- cil were elected-Lula Pardee, jane Sprenkle, and Evelyn Parker. Members representing the Freshmen Class in the Religious Council were Rae Fell, Connie Mfarren, Lila Chason, and Willard Robinson. Other classmates, Shirley Schaeffer, Jesse Baker, and Eileen Latter were chosen for The Wesley Echo's staff. Numerous changes took place at the begin- ning' of the second semester. Lula Pardee left us to become a lucky bride. To fill her vacancy in the Dormitory Council Jane Swann, one of our mischievous twins, was elected. Also Lois Lally, Dorcas Crump, Rosann X'Vholfarth, and Frances Rice left our ranks. And new fellow- lfllesleyans were welcomed: Manuel Azpurua, Charles Holdway, Don Gladden, lfVillard Knotts, Howard Kizer, Cecilia Belgrave, Hilda VViley, Carolyn Harbaugh, Lorraine Crockett, Louise Bloth, and Virginia Lyndall. At the half-way mark Marie Brown was our only Honor Student. We were proud to help establish a more successful athletic schedule for Wesley. In our memories will remain the spirit arousing games of hockey, basketball, and softballg the pep-rallies, and the cheer-leading. Also we are equally proud of our classmate, Eileen Latter, who was behind this sports program. Encircled dates of our calendars included our extended Christmas vacation which was due to the influenza epidemic, the scavenger- hunt party, and the formal Valen-tines Dance with the NAPS as guests. And not to be forgot- ten were the many personally encircled dates. Now at -the end of our freshman year we sincerely hail the Sophomore Class. fr? C. This year for the first time Vlfesley Haunted her colors in the field of interscholastic competi- tion. From beginning to end, the varsity teams showed a fine spirit of enthusiasm and a deter- mination to make way for Blue and VVhite. An extensive schedule of games was successful- ly carried out in hockey and basketball. The first competitive sport on Wes1ey's ath- letic calendar was field hockey. Although the squad lacked experience, the aggressive, hard- hitting forward line and the fast, skillful back- Held soon developed into a formidable team. The big game of the season was played on the University of Delaware held against her fresh- man team. This team had been victorious over all the other intramural teams at Delaware, so Wesley knew from the start that she was up against a powerful adversary. The game was closely contested, but when the final whistle blew, the score stood tied, 1-1. That Wesley was able to hold her own against the more select squad of the University was indeed a tribute to the drilling and polishing which the team had undergone. The hockey season end- ed with an undefeated record of five games. The schedule: November 1-Georgetown . . . . , . 2-2 November 9-Dover .........,...... 1-0 November 13-New Castle .....,....... . . . 1-1 November 16-University of Delaware .... . . . 1-1 November 27-Dover .....,....,....... . . . 7-0 The team .- Varsity forwards: Latter fCaptainj, Borer, Rit- tenhouse, O'Day, R. Fell, halfbacks: Cather, Vlfhitlock, Braigerg fullbacks: Davis, Tomlin- song goalkeeper: Kirk, subs: Day, VVebb. The basketball season opened with a good showing of fight and spirit on the par-t of the varsity players. A Hve-game winning streak was broken only by the Seaford du Pont Nylon team, a semi-professional team whose height and deceptive ball handling proved too much for 1fVesley's skill. The peak of the season was reached when VVesley defeated the experienced Milford town team, in one of the most hard- fought, fast games of the year. Another high- light of the season was the long awaited game against the winning girls' team of the basket- ball tournaments at the University of Dela- ware. In the last half of this game Wesley put up a stiff light and her fast driving sextette was defeated by a slim margin of only four points. The basketball season ended with a record of ten wins to three losses. By adding The Chorus this year the program was length- ened and enriched by the n1en's voices. The program opened with the Choir singing the Polka from Shvanda by VVeinberger fol- lowed by the contrasting quietness of Clokey's Flower of Dreams. The novelty, The Little French Clock, by Kountz, came next, and the first part of the program ended with the exub- erant Year's at the Spring by Beach. Mr. Worthington sang in his Hrst group of solos, Dearest Creature by Giardini, Hugh's Song of the Road by lflfilliams, She Never Told Her Love by Haydn, and the Prologue from Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. The Choir then sang a group of operetta favorites, 'KW' ant- ing You from The New Nloon, Rombergg Kiss Me Again, Mlle. Modiste by Herbert. As an encore they sang a modern arrangement by VVilson of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. THE CHORUS The Ensemble began with Frog Went a-Courting, a Kentucky mountain song ar- ranged by Brockwayg and then sang the lulla- by, South Carolina Croon Song by Gaul, ending with The Arkansas Traveler ar- ranged by Branscombe. For their encore they quoted Grandma Grunts, who admonished girls never to whistle lest they come to no good end. The arrangement was by Barthole- mew. For his second group of solos, Mr. Worth- ington, chose The Victory Riders, jamesg The Inn by Toyeg Lef' Away by Guiong and the ever-popular Shadrack by MacGim- sey. He was most gracious with his encores. The Chorus sang Ezekiel Saw de Wheel ar- ranged by Burleigh, the moving Easter spirit- ual, Sweet Little Jesus Boy by MacGimsey, and finally the humorous Who Did Swallow Jonah arranged by Protheroe. For the encore they sang the VVilson arrangement of Little David Play On Your Harp. For the finale Mr. Vlforthington and all of the singers sang the Toreador Song from Carmen, with Tramp Tramp Tramp from Naughty Marietta by Herbert as their encore. The spring concert was another memorable evening of this aca- demic year because of the success it was and the splendid feeling of achievement we had when it was over. Those Hrst few hours were Hlled with registration, meeting roommates, unpacking, arranging furniture, and becoming familiar with our future home. As we said goodbye to our parents, we realized that we were now on our own as never before. Orientation week-end gave us the opportun- ity to catch our breath and to begin our ad- justment to college life. VVith the aid of a few sophomores, we learned to End our way around Dover. Before the weekend was over, we were surprised at our nack of associating names with faces. On Monday morning, we were invaded with more new faces. The sophomores had arrived! Then began the search for big and little sisters. Everything was going along comparatively smooth till Rat lfVeek loomed before us. XfVe freshmen were ushered into initiation to the tune of Ah Sweet Misery of Life. It became the style for the well-dressed frosh to wear pajama tops, long stockings completely ob- scuring the hair, gaudy skirts, cardboard signs, and black whiskers. After the Enal hectic night of Rat Week, we were able to settle down to the routine of college life. Because of war time conditions, many of the girls took an active part in the USO Club. This very satisfactorily provided entertain- ment and variety in social activities. As the Hrst semester sped along, it brought our Hrst college formal. After Christmas vaca- tion, we suddenly realized that the dreaded exams were fast approaching, and with qualms we prepared for them. YVith the beginning of the second semester, Florence Pearce and Bryan Bailey joined us. The last semester of our freshman year was MEMUIRS rapidly slipping away before we knew it, and at the beginning of May, preparations were underway for an Old English May Day. Aud- rey Rumer and Virginia Rittenhouse were the freshmen attendants, and Edwin Thomas played the part of Robin Hood. After the May Day program a formal dance was held. Knowing that next year our class would be the leaders, we began thinking of candidates for the VVomen's Dormitory Council, Religious Council, and the Wesley Echo staff. On May 28, as we watched the impressive graduation ceremony, we realized that now we would take our places as sophomores. We hated to see them leave, but we were eagerly looking forward to becoming upper-classmen ourselves. The summer passed quickly and in Septem- ber We found ourselves again at Wesley renew- ing old friendships and adding new ones. Now it was our turn to acquaint the freshmen with college life. VVe did the initiating this year- somehow it was easy to forget how we, as freshmen, had wished that the sophomores would be more lenient on us. Priscilla Hawkins, Dorothy Scholz, and Tina Taylor were the newest additions to our class. This year because of an enlarged sports pro- gram, there was evidence of more school spirit as Vlfesleyans came out to cheer their teams on to victory. VVith the return of service men to college life, dances and parties became more prominent at lfVesley. A semi-formal Valentine dance marked the beginning of dances open to the public. Some NAPS from Bainbridge helped make the evening more successful. With only a few months left at Wesley our thought and conversations all center around graduation and plans for next year. As we write this, we are looking forward to our May Day program, commencement dance, and graduation. Now, as we bring our memoirs to a close, we sincerely wish that we could write a sequel in which we could say how much our life at Mfesley has meant to us through the years.
