ABOVE: Practicing their typing in one of Mrs. Elvia Trevino's typing classes are Vangie Martinez and Betty Barbee. Typing and Bookkeeping Skills of Seventies ln this age ol' ubiquitous computers, someone still has to man the old typewriter, take dictation and keep business books organized, so WHS offers typing, shorthand, book- keeping and related bookkeeping to help students make it in the business World. Typing l is learning l.lH1ll21IIlliIll2llS of using typewriters and basic business forms. Typing ll is a combination of letters, manuscripts, business forms and other types of typing. Students also switch from manual to electric type- writers at this point. Shorthand is a skill that will come in handy for taking notes in college, or for taking dictation in an olliee. The first semester is spent learning how to take dictation and mastering the forms. In general, mostly girls take short- hand, but more and more, boys are entering the class also. Bookkeeping and related bookkeeping are similar but the regular bookkeeping course is more business oriented and complicated than the related course, which stresses skills needed by the ordinary citizen in home and simple business records. ln addition to classroom activity, business students also particpate in Halloween carnival activities, UIL competi- tion, and a Valentine typing contest. Working busily in their bookkeeping workbooks are Susan James, Sylvia Salas, Vicki Bell, Blanca Chavez, Alicia Marin and Selina Gonzales. School takes independent study, this girl finds. Social studies, particularly government, suddenly became more relevant than ever before students did re- search, interviewing, and considering of the prime issues beliorc the public . . . this year, drugs, sealing down of the Viet Nam war, local, state and county elections, education, and law and order. Registering to vote and campaigning by school policy arc not permitted on campus, -but students nonetheless spent informal hours off campus concerning themselves with the business of being responsible citizens. As the year came to a close, the last ofthe states were considering the womenis rights amendment to the Constitu- tion . . . an amendment which the Texas legislature passed during a special pre-Easter session. Campus girls mused over their new dralt status, along with the rights they won. FAR RIGHT: Gladys Pfrim- mer and Homer Villarreal listen ton and read a Freneh hook at the same time. Playing a French record in Order to get more familiar in ac- cents and intonations is Juvenal Luna. Records, Tapes Help Students of Language French and Spanish class members played records and tapes to familiarize themselves with the pronunciation of words of both languages. ln all language classes, they learned how to speak Spanish and French, and about the history of the countries which speak them. The PASF and French clubs, through their activities, enrich the interest of the students in the languages. Both languages study the past and present culture and costumes. The French classes got together to help sponsor a play, and the Spanish classes helped with the uLas Posadasi' and Mexican suppers. Spanish classes, initially, are divided into classes for students whose home language is Spanish, and for those whose home language is English, with special emphasis on needs ol' both groups. Many of the students in French classes already speak fluent English and Spanish, thus French becomes a third language for them. 16fAcademies - .:. , ,.., ,,,,,gy:.,, ,,,..,,,,, W H k,, meme? pA,A,,A EQUAXQQEW, BOTTOIVI CENTER: Pan American Ifolk and Glory Dancers presented a special programuluan Valdez dances with a PA U stu- dent. Large English Dept. Revamps All Courses The English department, largest department on the campus of Weslaco High School, occupies the complete Annex building except two rooms for art classes. The department had established a new English library consisting solely ot' paperback books. Aside from studying grammar and learning, the fundementals of writing compositions and research papers, english students study plays, often acting them out. Teachers in the department have been working this year on re-structuring and re-vamping the entire high school English curriculum. Many ol' the materials will be in use next year. Besides having detailed discussions concerning the read- ing selections, the students discuss controversial topics that concern many people today. The head of the English de- partment is Mrs. ,loyce McWhorter. Mrs. McWhorter who teaches English lV, has taken students to participate in Ull. competition in ready writing and speed reading. On Weslaeo's campus this year are student teachers in English classes. The student teachers sat in the same class for a period of days to observe the students and the teach- ercs methods before taking over periodically on their own. Models of angles and prisms, overhead projectors manned by teachers explaining logical progressions of problems, is what fresh- men, sophomores, juniors or seniors face when they take one or more of the mathcmatic courses offered on campus. Math plays a large role in Ullu competition, also. Num- ber sense is available for those who wish to participate in math competition. Student l,ifcf23 lVlexico Trip Scientific Explorations Part of Class ROU'fine The difference bclwecn the scientific approach and thc everyday approach is to be found in such courses as Chem- istry l 81 ll, Biology l and H, and general science. Learning all phases ol' life and different scientific compounds are daily routines followed by many students in class. This year the Biology ll class went on a field trip into the interior of Mexico. Collecting specimens and observing biological points of interest were a few of the things the students did. qSee pagesj The Chemistry I and Il classes are relatively the same dealing with various formulas, learning the elements and experimenting in a lab periodically. Biology, however, is a different type of course alto- gc ther. Biology, which means the study of all phases of life, has students dissecting different types of animals anatomy. In general science, the students learn different ele- ments, as general science is closely related to chemistryg learning the periodic table of elements, having lab, and studying the different classes animals are grouped into. They also learn about all types of earth strata. Kent Grosser, chemistry teacher, is head of the science department. Drama is centered primarily on the different funda- mentals ol' acting. Speech l and Il classes are classes entirely different from drama, for in these classes, the student learns all the techniques of preparing and presenting speeches before an audience. Not only does the student learn to give prepared speeches, but he is oliten called upon to give an impromptu speech-at a momentis notice, Speech lil is for students to prepare for llll. competi- tion and competition only. ln this class, the student looks for material to compete with in tournaments, then practices for the speech meets once he has already found his mate- rial. Department head is Steve lidwards, with lVlike Richie assisting him. New this year was Mrs. Regina Yarborough, the girls debate coach. ulfdwards and Company have attended many tourna- ments out ofthe Valley, in San Benito and then traveled down to McAllen. On a larger scale such speech meets were held as far away as Corpus Christi, Alice and San Antonio. The forensics squad received lar more that their share ol' awards as they traveled from tournament to tournament. Most of the Pep Rally skits this year were pro- duced by drama or speech students, such as this one where Balde Silva, appropriately costumed, was felled by a pie thrown by Judy Garza. Modeling garments made eu' Homemakers Cope In Complex World Tomorrow's homemaker lives with technology and in a world of inflation, deflation, frozen prices, and Phase ll. She is learning to cope with it all in gracious fashion as she studies in the homemaking department. Five classes are offered at WHS, homemaking l, ll, and lll, home and family living, and home furnishing. Classroom activities are enhanced through membership in the Future Homemakers of America chapters, and this year for the first time, with womenis lib in reverse, two boys joined. ln homemaking l semesters are divided into cooking and sewing, one each semester, starting with the simple activity in each and working toward the more sophisticated. ln homemaking ll, students learn how to prepare bal- anced meals, with more emphasis on meats, pastries and vegetables. More independent work is pursued in home- making three, with projects geared toward the individual student. Home and family living stresses home management and child care, and Of COUTSC, home furnishings stresses that aspect of the skills. Students enter contests and style shows, and this year the CVAE home making students brought home more than two dozen blue ribbons for their efforts. Academicsl37 Girls' Program Archery, Gymnastics New Part of Program This year for the first time archery, tennis, and gym- nastics were offered to all of the girls in the physical educa- tion program. The girls are participating in baseball, volley- ball, and swimming. Folk dancing and social dancing were on the program also. The coaches said they felt that the girls should know some dances from every country, notjust all folk dancing. Intramurals were scheduled this year in volleyball onlyg basketball intramurals could not be held due to over- crowded classes. Boys physical education consisted of both outside and inside activities. A few of the outside activities were basket- ball, dodgcball, and volleyball. A physical fitness test is given to both the girls and boys yearly. Some of the things the students qualify in are measure sprints, push ups, and broad jumps. Physical fitness practice is held every semester, and everyone is required to complete the tests to pass the course. K I 4 '71-72 Is Eventful In School District Charged with administering the affairs of a 6,000 plus student group within the school district, trustees found 1971-72's school year to be one of the more eventful in the history of the district. School opened with teachers on a 10 months plan for the first time. A complaint to the federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare resulted in a complete switch from neighborhood schools to a unitary system. Physical facilities of all elementary facilities as well as fae- ulty was accomplished over one weekend. As school closed, trustees were working on a proposed building pro- gram which, if successful, will see a new high school plant, and abandonment of some ofthe worst buildings within the system. Teachers and students alike are involved with the planning. Also as school closed, trustees planned to receive a proposed dress code recommendation from the student advisory committee of the high school. Backing the Panthers, is Otto Longlois, at a pep rally.
