The Student Senate is the representative body which serves the student body as its voice and vehicle for community service. During the summer senators met with faculty, stylists and parents to recommend dress code revisions, subsequently adopted. They worked long and hard with school and community officials to provide emergency housing when Hurricane Ella threatened. Conventions, elections, dances etc. were also on their activity calendar. The Superintendentis Student Advisory committee was formed of students with a wide range of age, academic achievement, background, personal opinion, and grade as a discussion group to meet with the superintendent in order to strengthen communication between high echelon administration and student. Some ideas discussed in off-the-record sessions were subsequently adopted through regular channels. New Stage Band WHS Band Takes Tour Thru Mexico Cities Weslaco High School Band members made a four day concert tour into Mexico for their annual band trip, visiting San Luis Potosi, Saltillo, and Monterrey. ' Among the thrills were when the band's female members were serenaded outside their hotel in San Luis Potosi. For the forty-first year the band received superior one rating in marching contest, then Galindo Rodriquez was selected for All-State band. Kristi Hall received a first in twirling for her solo. A quintet of Liz Ann Henry, Rose Marie Henry, Margo York, Dorothy Wolfe, and Irene Flores and a quartet with Jackie Rainey, Kristi Hall, Magda Cantu, and Shirley Silkwood received first divisions for their ensembles. This year some 18 girls marched with the band at half-time activities, each girl carrying a purple and white flag. A new stage band was comprised of about 12 boys. They appeared at basketball pep rallys and at several assemblies, and earned a first division at jazz band contest in Kingsville. The band capped the year's activities winning a first division in concert contest, and presenting several hometown concerts. First AAAA Year Squad Cheers Thru Winning Season For the second consecutive year, the Pep Squad and cheerleaders saw varsity football and basketball teams win district titles, one in AAA and this year in AAAA. The cheerleaders also had victories in their first year in 28-AAAA competition. In August of each year, a Valley cheerleader workshop is held but there was one difference this year, as the cheerleaders had practiced a month before and changed old routines before going into competi- tion. The practice paid off as they came home with one third place and four first place ribbons. They also won the giant spark plug award for Spirit. This year an organized basketball pep squad was formed. The regular squad had about 150 members but only the first 50 who signed up were allowed into the newly formed basketball squad. At the beginning of the year, members of the pep squad were asked by the band if any pep squad members would like to serve as flag girls and march with the band in half time shows. About 18 girls were chosen to participate. Another feature at football games was the Panther trailer crew. Mini-Courses Language Arts Class Sparks Determination Determination is the Word that encompasses faculty attitudes and student goals in language arts classes of English, Business communications and journalism. Determination is necessary to master the various forms of communication surrounding life. Learning of Anglo-Saxon poetry, the Greek theater, inductive reasoning and famous playwrights like Shake- speare, Aristotle, and Sophocles is one phase of the English department. Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior major works classes study with the aid of filmstrips, tapes, records and art reproductions. Special emphasis is placed on independ- ent thoughts. An innovation this year for the English department was the mini-course, instituted the second semester. Students on all levels 9-12 participated in brief courses on news, adverstising, mystery stories, plays, philosophy and poetry according to their personal choices. Their trophies fill the display cases. Skits always need polishing upg monologues have to be practiced to perfection, yet backstage activity is too important to forget. Sets have to be made, costumes sewn or pieced together, make-up applied and props 'iscroungedn from all possible places. The many tournaments entered this year are the reason for much of this activity. These contests become the places where oneis ability to act as someone else is rated. Students went to places in the Valley and to one tournament at Trinity University in San Antonio. As world borders shrink, knowledge of at least one foreign language becomes almost mandatory. Government classes are divided into two levels, aca- demic and general. For the first time, this year government courses are a full year in duration, instead of one semester as in the past. History consists of required courses such as world history and American history, and optional courses such as Texas history and problems in social studies. All social studies classes make use of films, transparen- cies, sound-film strips, and other material. Besides having courses in history, students also need the knowledge of another language. Two foreign languages, French and Spanish, are offered at WHS. Students are taught language, customs, and cultures of the French or Spanish speaking people. The language department has use of equipment such as tape recorders with earphones. ln both language areas, contemporary reading and using conven- tional skills are stressed. Mrs. Frances Collier, French teacher, explains to her French II students how to use a listening station. Academicsf113 Basics- Specifics Math, Science Differ Ithough Interrelated Though the disciplines of math and science are different, they are highly interrelated as students who take either or both find out. Students of physics find that formulas translated into experiment necessitate the scien- tific process and the budding scientist finds that often he is frustated Without a knowledge of mathematics. On the WHS campus, through all plans of graduation, all students take courses in both subject areas, though the depth to which they pursue them depends on the plan of graduation and individual choice of some electives in both fields such as elementary analysis and biology ll. ln biology I classes students learn a basis of word understanding in which the ground work for the scientific education is laid. From biology I, the student goes on to chemistry which consists of formulas, experiments, and fundamentals of physical law. ln elective courses, such as biology ll, students pursue in depth studies of the subject.
