Mrs. Andersen gives every free moment to students at WHS. Unlike many teachers, her school work neither begins in September nor ends in May, neither does it begin first period, nor end eighth period. Mrs. Andersen supplements class days by taking students to conferences, conventions, and workshops, attempting to make WHS7s publications the best. Additionally, Mrs. Andersen's face is sometimes seen at assemblies, football games and pep rallies and club meetings as she waits patiently to help student photographers. During the endless hours of photo- graphing each student for his school picture, Mrs. Andersen stands pa- tiently with comb and hair spray in hand, helping students make last minute touch ups. Mrs. Andersen teaches her stu- dents to participate fully in writing, organizing, designing layouts, selling and distributing publications. In addition, there's theory too, as Mrs. Andersen uses world newspapers, television, and sample materials from other schools as living textbooks for ers ens 13 ll tlld t. 4. When commencement came around in 1970, more than 250 students were candidates for gradua- tion. Weslaeols student body the first day of school reported to classes with shovels for the boys, and lunches for two for the girls, as students came prepared to clear an athletic field. When more than 900 students reported the first day of classes in the fall of 1969, they already had big stacks of hooks for four or five classes in a wide variety of subjects, and they knew that the attendance would build to more than l650 at the peak enrollment time. l6lClasses Classes! 17 81 Su Sha 'RW pw 'Nb-Q 18fSeniors ws, 'Vx Aaron, Gary Mel Aguayo, J anie Akerstrom, Bo Alcala, Aurora Aldrete, Maria Guadalupe Alejandro, Maria Oralia Almaguer, Elida Andersen, Linda Anderson, Joan Elaine Aparicio, Maria Luisa Argueta, Edward Jasso Avila, Jesus Baez, Irma Ida Balboa, Felicitas Barker, Rochelle Barnes, Peggy Bernal, Johnny Bradford, Peggy Lu Brown, Karen Brown, Leon J r. Freshmenf65 Academies - - 1969-70 was the beginning of new policies, courses, class schedules, and programs. The eight period day, where students have either of two desig- nated lunch periods was initiated, and open campus was continued. Students enjoyed the freedom of independent study periods by study- ing in the library, visiting with each other in the study lounge, or goof- ing offw away from campus. Some had 7:30 a.m. classes, leaving school for the day at 12:30 p.m., and still others came at 10:30 a.m. and left at 3:30 p.m. Vocational School formally merged with high school, and the coordinated vocational academic education program, designed for students learning a trade in addition to attending regular classes, was brought to WHS. Also, for the first time, students enrolled in physical education participated in swimming classes, and a tumbling team was also organized. At the end of the year, an estimated 7000 books, with 300 of these purchased this year, including S p anish-English dictionaries, almanacs, medical dictionaries, and several sets of reference books were available for student use from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Instructional aids, including film strips, newspapers, and overhead projectors, were purchased to supplement textbooks. Also, teachers aides spent many hours duplicating materials for the department. 1 All these changes prepared WHS for officially becoming a AAAA high school in 1970-71. , Policy Changes, Fresh Ideas Roll ln With Decade i Mrs. Mildred Cowley, assistant principal :i'.ft3?:' ' 4. .1 3,5 ,C i V 5 V. The school year at WHS was also a beginning and an endwthc end of old ideas and policies and thc beginning ol' new ideas, courses, programs, and policies to prepare WllS for be- coming a AAAA school in 770371. To reach these goals, many changes have occurred. A new principal, assistant principal, super- intendent, librarian, counselor, and new secretaries, aides, and teachers were added. Student dress codes were modified, an eight period day was initiated, students scheduled their own classes, and an independ- ent study program was continued. WHS had an enlarged budget for supplies and instructional aids. An additional sum of 32,682 in Title I money was also available. For the first time, WHS faculty members organized formally into departmental groups in anticipation of becoming a AAAA school. The old age ended with celebra- tion of Weslaco's 50th birthday and then the new decade rolled in fast and furious with students, faculty, and admistrators experiencing a bomb hoax, fires, gEarth Dayi, a mini-walkoul, and demands on the school. They also faced crowded school conditions, new class schedules, modified dress codes, and many other changes. The problems drew students, faculty, and administrators into a closely-knit, eo-operative working unit. Aeademicsf99 Sports - - llistory always repeats it- self, it is often said. This holds true in the case of the fighting Panthers. The first football team of 1924 won the Valley Cham- pions title, and thc team of 1955, as an AAA team, went to state semi-finals. As the Panthers ol' 1969 left the ranks of AAA tojoin the AAAA powerhouse ranks, they did so carrying the dis- trict title, and came within a whisper of holding the regional title. The Panthers Of 1970, with an illustrious heritage, a goal to achieve, and a spirited student body, faculty and group of townspeople to support them, look forward to continued growth and success. Sports 1121 Activities - - In 1969-70, campus activities were available to suit the interests of every student who wished to join one. For the musically inclined, there were the WHS Singers, band, and Choir. Those who desired to explore careers joined the Industrial Coopera- tive Training, the Distributive Educa- tion, or the Vocational Office Educa- tion job-training programs. Those with spirit to spare for the various sports joined various teams or cheered them via the Pep Squad or cheerleading. Students interested in politics served in the Student Senate or became officers of the various classes. Others learned about,Latin American countries, their people, and customs through the Pan American Student Forum. Another group, Press Club, was for those interested in communica- tions, while the scientific-minded joined the Phi-Chem-Bi. University Interscholastic League competition brought oppor- tunities in persuasive speaking, poetry interpretation, typewriting, journalism, and other fields. Here, students brought WHS statewide recognition and earned chances for scholarships, at the same time. Additionally, there were many less-structured activities for students and teachers to enjoy. The teachers formed an informal pep club at rallies for football games, and they sat in their own section. There were also such things as the Halloween Carnival, the Weslaco Anniversary Celebration, workshops, conventions, banquets, carwashes, the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, bake sales, and the social high point of the season, the Junior-Senior Prom. It was like many other years at many other schools, but il was different. lt was a year to remember the past, evaluate the present, and build dreams for the future. lt began when students returned for registration, and it ended when the last tassel was tossed May 29. Between these dates, we packed in assemblies, pep rallies, district and regional games, an anniversary cele- bration, contests, and endless hours of activity. Situations abroad as well as those at home influenced our lives. ln classes, we discussed the moratori- ums and the draft lottery. Boys signed up for the draft, and still other students anticipated induction. We realized the possibility of a totally polluted world when biology H students painted signs proclaiming HAir Today, Gas Masks Tomorrowfi In February, Mexican-American Youth Organization representatives presented demands to the school board. Attempting to prove that HMAYO is not representative, Hmany students wore red, white, and blue armhands while a few wore brown and black to designate their support of MAYO. But, we knew the same people, joined the same organizations, and struggled through the same courses. We glowed with pride when we saw golden trophies, blue ribbons, and plaques, confirming achievement in almost every UIL and school related activity. We griped about hot, over- crowded classrooms and 7:30 classes, but nobody died of either. We met deadlines or found last-minute excuses for failure to meet deadlines. Despite incompatibility between students and faculty over the USA We at WHS found that despite our differences, students, faculty, and administration formed a closely-knit, single working unit. ln April, when a fire swept the office, studentshelped firemen and administrators remove damaged equipment, demonstrating that generations can work together.
