Destroying the stero-typed image of drug- addicted, card-burning teenagers, WHS Sing Out members expressed their ideas and beliefs on America, democracy and people in general. Expressed to modern and moving music, cast members sounded their spirited eruption against hatred, fear, and greedfi Rushing on stage and exploding into song with a spirit from within, Weslaco Sing Out rocked the state with its new modern beat and the new enthusiastic message of UP WITH PEOPLE! Presenting two civic per- formances in Weslaco, performing before numerous clubs and organizations up and down the Valley, and completing a five day state-wide tour during March 27-31, in ad- dition to appearing via tape in Austin, Houston, and Viet Nam, Weslaco Sing Out broadcast its message of commitment to God and countryw to thousands. i J 1 r 4 1 59 . 5 'A 5, ,. -',' i N 3 -asm f Jimmy Green, narrator of the Sing Out group, reads a soldier's letter as Beth Ussery, Darla Burton, Wendy Haverfield, Donna Michalk, Mary Ellen Payne, Cathy Ligon, and Dee Ann Moore hum Brave War in the background. , im. rr 1 N - - . f I -A i tl, Ronnie McManus sings a solo in What Color Is God's Skin. To tell the story of 1967-68 at WHS ill story and picture, is the task that the La Palma staff seeks to fulfill each year, and the 1967-68 staff had an unusually eventful year to record. There was Hurricane Beulah, with its effect upon school schedules, activ- ities, and individual students. There was Sing Out 767-a demonstration for America in which about 300 students in the community participated. These and many other events may be recalled because the annual staffers worked late and long to record at least a mention of each school related activity- even study-during the year. -M-N.. I n I Media' MM 644 ,bvvzfu R, 2 r i v ,', NVQ' dvi lv 'X , Th fling, r ZX Weslaco's wonderful world of 1967-68 is history. The class of '68 has scattered to campus, college, jobs, service or marriage. Returning students have scattered for the summer to school, 'to vacation, to work, or to just plain 'goof it off., The Campus, the world represented within the circle of the book's theme pages, won't ever look the same again. What made the wonderful worlds of WHS 1967-68 different? The faces, the events, the shadow of world affairs which colored our thoughts and activities made them this way. Our world first widened with the arrival of Rita Kolvik, an American Field Service student from Nor-4 wagf. She and almost 1000 students became acquainted an reacquainted through five long days of registration. We had just begun to settle down in earnest when' Hurricane Beulah blew in. We were educated all right-in ow to get along without lights, water, school and television and in how to fill sand bags and slug in the ud to bolster threatening dikes. We learned howto ork with refugees, to make and to distribute thousands f sandwiches, and to work with administrators and w v r Y i Y i i x N l i i , x I x H N W l w l Civil Defense people-no generation gap here. Q Then it was back to school-football ont Monday night, telescoped activities-the holidays. A d then midsemesters. Sing Out America by the ,merican Heritage students gave our answer to hippies d draft card burners in repeated performances. We ,rilled as N the defense department showed 5'Singout vide xtapes to ' servicemen in Viet' Nam. Second semester wa frantic with UIL activity, tests, student, testing, terni papers, classes, library amignments, and senior activiyes. We remembered the War in Viet Nam and the P X' peace negotiations as we came down the school wawvay by the peace tree planted by the Pan American Student Forum. l , Underl ing our whole thoughts were ques 'ons of the year- e draft, national elections, the drdg ques- tion, and less serious, long hair and short skijts-too long and too short each were the verdicts we ha to live with on campus. It was a sobering year, a broidening ear. Y We learned that when trouble really comes,l e can do our share and hold our heads high in the wo lds of WHS and the world of man. 1 Aaron, Gary Mel: 49,125 Aaron, Hal: 61, 153 Aaron, Sandra Elaine: 39, 47, 128,140,1-14,155,156 s 1519 Acevedo, Daniel: 61 Acevedo, Noel: 39 Acevedo, Pete: 61 Adame, Armando: 23, 153 144, Agu ayo, J uanita: 49 Aguilar ,Janie: 49 Aguirre, Juan: 23, 158 Aguirre, Marieela: 39 Alaniz, Domingo: 39 Aldaba, Maria Victoria: 61 Aldrete, Maria Guadalupe: 49 Alejandro, Aurora: 39 Alejandro, Marcelo: 39 Alejandro, Maria Oralia: -1-9, 146 Alexander, Robert: 4-9, 133 Allen, Becky Marie: 311, 39, 108, 115, 137, 140, 141, 147, 152, 153,156 Al1en,John Barton: 61, 150 Almaguer, Dclfina: 23,158 Almaguer, Elida: 49 Almaguer, Elsa: 61 Almaguer, Roble: 23, 142, 158 Almanza, Marcos: 39 Almaraz, Elsa: 39,152,156 Almaraz, George: 61. 153 Andersen, Linda: 49, 141 Flores, Anderson, Joan Elaine: -19, 110, 111, 138 Anderson, Mark William: 61, 125,131,137 Anderson, Phyllis Donelle: 392 140, 14-6, 14-9 Aparicio, Maria Luisa: 49, 82 Aparicio, Salome: 61 Arce, Enrique: 61 Arce, Rene: 61 Argueta, Edward: 49 Argueta, Estellaz 39, 152, 156 Armendariz,Juan: 49 Arrcdondo, David: 61, 149 Arredondo, Elida: 39, 156 Arredondo, Filomcna: 49, 156 Arredondo, Raul,Jr.: 23, 109. 160, 161 Arredondo, Sulema: 39, 142 Austin, Ber11ard: 49 .-tvalos, Jose Arturo: 49 Avalos, Lydia: 61 Avila, Sulema: 61 Ayala, Castulo: 39 Bachelder, Mike: 23, 12-1-, 126, 130 Bachelder, Patrick Eugene: 39 l1aez,1rma Ida: 49 Balaguer, Josephina: 61, 149 Balboa, Felicitas: 4-9 Balderas, Elena: 61 Balderrama, Maria: 61 Balli.Vida1tBillyj: 39 Barbee, Terry: 61 Barbosa,Johnny: 23, 158 Barker, Bruce: 61, 125, 147. 151 Barker, Rochelle: 4-9. 113, 129, 151 Barnes, Peggy: 49, 128, 129, 155, 156 Bautista, Antonia: 211, 147, 156 Bautista, Irma: 61,154 l Bautista, Mary Ellen: 39, 111, 147, 154 Beccrra, Juana: 61.142 Becerra, Maria dc Lourdes: 61 11011, Nancy: 49,152 Benitez.
