phi-Uhazn-Qi Slaeaaeaf Science Zcfwcalzcm In existence since 1961, the Phi-Chem-Bi club now has a membership of sixty-six. The name of this organization is a representation of the three phases of science offered in W.H.S. fphysics, chemistry, and biologyj. The three objectives of the club are knowledge and understanding, observation and skills, and in- terests and opportunities. These enable the members to gain and use science knowledge, to make repeated and accurate observations, and to develop an interest in the field of science. Not pic- tured is Johnny Weber, treasurer. 42 The National Honor Society is ahigh school organization, membership in which is based on scholarship, character, leadership, and service. The main objective of NHS is to promote these outstanding characteristics in students. The teachers of WHS select members onapercentage basis from the- sophomore, junior, and senior classes from the eligibility lists. Members must be candidates for the academic plan and must maintain a scholastic average of 90 in each academic course. Activities for the club include a formal initiation of new members, an installation of new officers, and Christmas caroling at the Hidalgo County Old Folks Home. Students are informed of their selection into the National Honor Society early in the year in a surprise initiation assembly.

This year' s choir, directed by Mrs . Fouad Mattar, has participated in a variety of activities. The W.H.S. choir has given concerts for the stu- dent body, the new occupants of Wesley Manor, the Valley's winter visitors, and several Valley organi- zatrons. Two members of the choir have won recognition, Pat LeMaster, re- gional choir, and Nancy McEachron, Yoder choir award. An annual spring concert was held at which Sandy Morrison was named choir sweetheart and Frank Alton, beau. This year's choir officers are Sandy Morrison, president, Doug Myers, vice-presidentg Sharon Bondurant, secretary- treasurer, and Mary Cross, Student Senate representative.
