What a contrast to go from the snow scene into a world of myriads of beautiful flowers of many varieties! How refreshing to make such a visit during 'such weather! This was not the result of an accident, but someone had invested his time, thought and energy that this pleasure may be enjoyed by visitors. It has been my pleasure to listen-in on a musician who sways with emotion hundreds of intelligent, trained auditors, While he plays the piano. The strains are first gentle, then deafening, but move all hearts. Some may think that pianists, like lilies, grow without apparent toil, yet for every note struck by the master there have been hours of patient, drudging practice. One who would be a master musician must be willing to spend time, thought, and energy. I What a wonderful experience it is to stand on the side lines at a track meet and Watch the winners fly past. I have seen great crowds thrilled with the wonderful speed and endurance of the contestants. But these athletes were developed as a result of hard training that cost each one time, thought, and energy. It is even true with friendship. Like worthwhile things, friendship is alive and either developed as a result of someone's time, thought and energy, or it dies because of neglect-it does not just happen. We must put forth-effort to make friends and to keep them. Someone has well said, If you would have a friend, you must be one. This means, I think, that you must show yourself worthy of friendship. Happy is that person who has so lived: who has so spent his time, thought, and energy that he can number his friends by his acquaint- ances. I trust each member of the Class of '26 has learned this valuable lesson as you have learned others. I am sure that you should, be able to number each pupil and teacher of the Weslaco High School as a staunch friend. Then it is my wish that as you go from this institution to institutions of higher learning you may have become so proficient in this accomplishment that your college teachers and classmates may be won to the ever growing circle of friendship. My further wish is that this circle of friendship may ever increase and never dimin- ish, and to that end I suggest that you take the following quotation has your guide for winning friendships that endure: Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar: Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel.
