What a contrast to go from the snow scene into a world of myriads of beautiful flowers of many varieties! How refreshing to make such a visit during 'such weather! This was not the result of an accident, but someone had invested his time, thought and energy that this pleasure may be enjoyed by visitors. It has been my pleasure to listen-in on a musician who sways with emotion hundreds of intelligent, trained auditors, While he plays the piano. The strains are first gentle, then deafening, but move all hearts. Some may think that pianists, like lilies, grow without apparent toil, yet for every note struck by the master there have been hours of patient, drudging practice. One who would be a master musician must be willing to spend time, thought, and energy. I What a wonderful experience it is to stand on the side lines at a track meet and Watch the winners fly past. I have seen great crowds thrilled with the wonderful speed and endurance of the contestants. But these athletes were developed as a result of hard training that cost each one time, thought, and energy. It is even true with friendship. Like worthwhile things, friendship is alive and either developed as a result of someone's time, thought and energy, or it dies because of neglect-it does not just happen. We must put forth-effort to make friends and to keep them. Someone has well said, If you would have a friend, you must be one. This means, I think, that you must show yourself worthy of friendship. Happy is that person who has so lived: who has so spent his time, thought, and energy that he can number his friends by his acquaint- ances. I trust each member of the Class of '26 has learned this valuable lesson as you have learned others. I am sure that you should, be able to number each pupil and teacher of the Weslaco High School as a staunch friend. Then it is my wish that as you go from this institution to institutions of higher learning you may have become so proficient in this accomplishment that your college teachers and classmates may be won to the ever growing circle of friendship. My further wish is that this circle of friendship may ever increase and never dimin- ish, and to that end I suggest that you take the following quotation has your guide for winning friendships that endure: Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar: Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel. Even old Sol looked perplexed and a dark shadow of awe crossed his brow. These glaring rays of green were shed by the members of the Classiof '26, for we were Freshmen. As the days rolled by, the high and mighty Seniors diligently and tirelessly plied their trade-that of subduing the Freshmen, But to their amazement they found this a difficult undertaking, for We proved to be the peppiest class that had ever entered W. H. S. The month of May came and we were confronted by an obstacle that appeared to be impossible for our weak hearts and brains-especially our weak brains. But the impossible became possible: and so it came to pass that we were full- Iiedged Sophomores. A few of our '22 classmates succumbed to the trials at the end of the first year, but, nevertheless, we still held a goodly numberof students. A more scholarly attitude seemed' to settle upon us, and We settled into a peaceful and. uneventful year, devoted almost entirely to studies. The first two years of our high school life seemed to pass like a Hash of lightning, and we were Juniors before we realized it. It was during this year that our class made such a good impression on our superintendent that we were intrusted with the publication of the WESLACO HI-LIFE-the first paper to be published by W. H. S. We successfully inaugurated the publication of a high school paper for Weslaco and left affairs in a good condition for the class to follow in our steps. A Four high school years have been stored away in the pleasant corners of our memories. Our little journey is over, and We have arrived at the crossroads -a place where we must decide upon our future activities: may happiness and prosperity follow us all. We wish to express our deepest appreciation to the members of the faculty for their sincere efforts in helping us reach this milestone in our lives. ' To the students who follow us, we extend our heartiest congratulations and trust that their days in the grand old high school shall be as pleasant and bene- ficial as ours have been. Page 56 sew Qt SENIOR CLASS WILL OF 1926 To Whom It May Concern: We, the Senior Class of Weslaco High School, 1926, being about to pass out of this sphere of education, in full possession of a crammed mind, Well- trained memory, and almost super-human understanding, do make and pub- lish this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills or promises by us at any time heretofore made, or mayhap, carelessly spoken, one to the other, as the thoughtless wish of an idle hour: First, that the Class sponsor, Miss Franks, be the sole executrix, and no bond exacted. To the Juniors we bequeath the honor of being Seniors, the vast respon- sibilities, the right to the many Senior privileges which we had the pleasure of enjoying this year. To the Sophomores we bequeath the thanks of the class for the hearty co-op- eration they have given us during the whole year, and especially during the popularity contest. To the Freshmen we bequeath the right to some day be wise and sophisti- cated as they think us to be, and we sincerely hope that they learn how to walk through the halls noiselessly. To the football team of next year, the ability of Cecil Boone and Raymond Clifford: we couldn't induce Raymond Moreland to surrender his. Howard Ham leaves his wonderful ability as yell leader, and his sheikish ways to Murray Bennett. Lillian Spradlin leaves her gift of gab and Ponjola Bob to Lilla Yarbrough. Raymond Moreland leaves his good nature to all the grouches: his apparent cynical opinion of the opposite sex he leaves to Ralph Leech with the hope that Ralph will profit by his experiences. To Ruth Tarpley, Bess Enness graciously fand gracefullyj leaves her won- derful personality and perfect attendance record. Willie Hilly bequeaths her soft brown eyes and her self-assurance in recita- tions to Nelle Whitehead. To Cora Wagers, Opal Pike leaves her many accomplishments, especially her fame as an excellent skater, and her ability to do the Charleston. To Robertine Deen she wills her blue and white flannel sport dress. Roland Blackwell wills his long sweater and his ability as a debater to John Garnett. ' To Ruth Nalfziger, Mildred Young bequeaths her melodious voice, expecting her to assist Chubby in leading yells next year. To Angel Gonzales, Raymond Clifford wills his auburn hair. Christine Yarbrough wishes to leave her knowledge of Physics, and the honor of being the most agreeable student in W. H. S. to Maurine Cook. Page -57 Wm ,----.- H3 f ' :- r vs : p LB I I Maurin Q1 f leaves all her adjectives to the Sophomore Class to distribute Q among the members of the Hi-Life staff for next year, to avoid constant use of the few they have learned the past two years. To Jessie King, Letha Emery bequeaths her hair: she also wishes her the best of luck next year in winning another football, as well as a Senior ring with the initials M. Virginia Voigt leaves a Warning to all high school girls not to trespass on private property . Her well-known giggle she wills to Lyndall Yoder. Jeff White wills his angularity to Boyd Scott. To Irene Richardson, Margaret Whitson leaves her Uke , to entertain a little boy called Hi-pockets . Cecil Boone leaves his surplus energy to Hazel Stone, who is greatly in need of it. His good looks and way with women he leaves to Emmet Clements. Lula Arnett bequeaths her quiet nature and her excellent record as a student to Nadine Weaver. '.?ia'J-WG SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY As the prophet of the Senior Class of 1926, dare I prophesy the future of my classmates with the wisdom of Solomon? Ah, yes! Why shouldn't I give of the knowledge that has been intrusted to me? As I contemplate the virtues and talents of the Seniors of 1926, a vision of their accomplishments comes before me. In the land of the future I can hear the voice of Mildred Young as she sings to an audience of several thousand people, about whom she has woven a spell with the simple melody of her voice. X 1 And, behold, a change comes over my spirit and my vision is changed to quite a different scene. The Honorable Raymond Moreland has used his money and influence to establish a school where the Seniors are perfect and the under- classmen respect them as their leaders. I look again, and, as I look, I see a stately old home among the hills, and over the gate there is a sign HOME FOR AGED MEN . I look more closely and on the porch I see a young girl talking and laughing with the old men. It is none other than Bess Enness, She lives here because it is so quiet, and the old men adore her, figuratively speaking. The fate of the most beautiful girl, Lois Clark, is, indeed, an unexpected one. Possessing such marvelous beauty, she should have gone to Hollywood, but she preferred to be the wife of Dr. Howard Ham. Even as I watch the home lights die away, a vision of Lillian Spradlin, the most rapid speaker to be found, comes before me. She is perfectly contented as a member of the Sets-Photo Circus, and is glad to be independent of everyone, especially of all men, for she has always cherished a most unjust feeling of disgust toward them. Soon afterwards I find myself entering a magnificent church where a minister in his robes of dignity pours forth words of inspired instruction. Verily, it is Jeff White himself, who has thus gone into the work of the church. While I ponder these things in my heart, the door of Baylor College swings open. Within these stately walls I behold the three girls who were wise and studious as influential teachers of this institution. Another view reveals to me a beautiful reception room filled with talented and learned people. The hostess, a society leader, is Miss Virginia Voigt: the greatest favor that can be bestowed on one is to attend her social functions. This particular evening there seems to be a special attraction, and, as I look, I see Opal Pike, the greatest authority of the the day on How to Keep Thin . This scene fades away and next my vision wanders to Italy. I can see gon- dolas floating lazily down the canal of Venice. One is more elaborate than all the others. Occupying this one is Margaret Whitson, who is married to an Italian Count. V On a small island out in the Pacific I find Roland Blackwell and Cecil Boone, who have dedicated their superb young lives to the great cause of civilizing Cannibals. V i i i V I I I V in fX UEFA Now there appears before my eyes a picture of the beautiful Rio Grande Valley. In that place dear to my heart, I find several of my former classmates who are still contented to make their homes there. I see a schoolroom, and at the head of the class of Physics I see Lucile Whitson. Then from the schoolroom I wander to a household, Where I see two persons whom I admired most in my high school days, Raymond Clifford and Christine Yarbrough. They are now man and wife, and in spite of the fact that they both have red hair, they seem to think that life is ideal and the dreams come true. Verily, as I behold this scene, the veil is drawn before me, shutting out the things that are to be. I turn reluctantly to the things that are, sure that only goodness, truth, and prosperity shall follow the members of the Class of 1926. MAURINE GRIFFITH. g IF- W. H. JUNIOR SPOOK SPREE In celebration of Spook night, the Junior Class and a number of their friends gathered at the home of Maurine and La Verne Cook for a party. All came masked and there was much fun in guessing each character. Dancing was en- joyed until a late hour when hot cocoa, sandwiches, cookies, andcandied apples were served. I S' G. R. PARTY One of the best Girl Reserve parties of the year was the Boy and Girl Mixer held November 21, at the home of Ruth Naffziger. Appropriate games for each month of the year were played. The June wedding was especially enjoyed. A most delicious plate lunch consisting of sandwiches, potato salad, olives, pickles, cookies, candied grapes, and hot cocoa was served to more than sixty guests. FOOTBALL FROLIC . ' As a delightful ending of football season, Mr. Fred Rives entertained the football squad with a dance at his beautiful country home, December 4. The entire squad, their dates , and friends danced until a very late hour to en- chanting music furnished by the McAllen Dance Orchestra. Punch and fudge were served throughout the evening. SOPH SOCIAL Jewell Watson charmingly entertained the Sophomore Class with a Christmas party at her home, December 18. Parlor games were enjoyed by all, especially the Suitcase Race . Gifts were exchanged by members of the class. Punch and cake were served to about twenty-five guests after a delightful evening. E. Martin has produced championship teams for the last two years. Last year he made it possible for a team that had never won a foot- ball game to walk off with Valley championship. This year success has been even greater. Besides another Valley championship in football, with- out one score against us, his coaching made possible the winning of South- west Texas championship in basket ball and a creditable showing in the finals at Austin. With his keen understanding of his boys, he challenges them for the best they have. For your genial disposition, your dauntless spirit, your unfailing encouragement and sympathy-we love you, Coach! F? 1 , 1 4' lv, l ueews R. l ' COACH SHEFPIELD Mr. Sheflield came to Weslaco this year to assist Coach Martin who was planning a greater athletic year for Weslaco High. As Coach's right-hand He took man. Mr. Sheffield has proved himself efficient and capable. charge of the second football squad and made a team that was able to defeat some of the first teams in the Valley. Coach Sheffield and the scrubs should be given due credit for our success in football last season. While Mr Martin was training our champion basketeers, Mr. ShefEeld began build- ing tennis and indoor baseball teams. This first year has been a successful one for Coach Sheffield. and he has won a place in the heart of every boy and girl in W. H. S. 15325 Page 7r 4 J. D. GARNETT-Fullback J. D. Garnett was a veteran back, having played three years for Weslaco. Although injured at the first of the season. he made up for lost time when he recovered. He will be with W. H. S. one more year. RALPH LEECH-Center Captain i'Longboy Leech is an all South Texas center. His superb tackling and art of intercepting passes were main features of the season. His elongated arms prevented the opposing backs from making any headway through the line. He has one more year in W. H. S. CECIL BOONE-Tackle Cecil is another three letter man. He showed his ability as a tackle by always getting his man. We are sorry to lose Boone this year. MILTON WEAVER-TOCkl9 Weaver played a prominent part on the football team this season. Tackling and intercepting passes were his favorite sports. He will be with us two more years Cmaybe morej. RICHARD HARDESTY-E nd 'ADick was a good end. His interference was good and he blocked all the punts and passes that came his way. He will be here another year. Page 71 RAYMOND MORELAND-Gudrd Raymond was a good, fast guard. He never let his man get the jump on him and was in every play in the game. Red will be missed next season, as he graduates this year. JEFF WHITE-End Jeff, although new in the art of football, made a reliable end. He was always down under a punt or pass and saw to it that the punts were not returned very far. He was a faithful worker. Jeff will not be with us next year. ROLAND BLACKWELL-Tackle Old Rock'efn and Sock'em was an excellent tackle. He always did his best until the last whistle sounded. Roland is another player who leaves W. H. S. this year. BEN PENICK-Halfback Spuds craved action! When once going he was hard to stop. His skilled knowledge of drop-kicking usually enabled him to make the extra point. Ben will be with us two more years. M. L. ,DEW-Guard M. L. was an eflicient guard in every sense of the word. His charges were successful, and he opened up such holes in the opposing line that line bucks were effective. He was a Senior this year. Page 72 RAYMOND CLIFFORD-Fullback i'Red Clifford's punting and passing were accurate, and he could skirt the ends for consistent gains. He was a good clean player and had plenty of pep and endurance on the gridiron. This is his last year with W. H. S. WELDON SWINNEA-Quarterback Swinnea was one of the best quarterbacks in the Valley. His fleetness of foot and indomitable spirit did much to make the season successful. He could always be relied upon to buck the line for gains. We are glad Weldon has one more year with W. H. S. HOMA MORELAND-Halfbaclk Homa was an all-round halfback. What he lacked in weight he made up in determination. He was a consistent ground gainer, and was hard to catch in the open. He Will be here another year. CLINTON COMPERE-End Clinton was an earnest and willing player. He never gave up, but broke up many plays behind the line of scrimmage. Clinton will be with us next season. JARRETT PURL-Halfback Red was little but loud. Although the least man on the team, he was far from being last. He could sift through the opposing team for lengthy gains and never failed to recover a fumble in his vicinity. Page 73 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE W.H.S. The defeat of Edinburg 21-0 gave the Panthers the title of Valley Champs . - The only defeat of the season was the game with Robstown for district title. Both teams had a perfect record for the season. Neither had lost a game nor been scored against. Although outweighed and outclassed, the fighting spirit of the Panthers enabled them to score against their opponent. An end run by Swinnea made the first touchdown for Weslaco. A sixty-yard run by Clifford in the second half gave the Panthers another touchdown. Although defeated Weslaco went down fighting hard. May we avenge this defeat next season! After defeating five teams by large scores, the Panthers won over Edinburg for County Championship. San Benito, cham- pions of the Lower Valley, were also defeated by the Panthers, and Valley Championship was secured. District Championship came next when we defeated three teams in the tournament at Taft. Weslaco was now entitled to take part in the semi-finals at Austin. Weslaco became Southwest Texas Champions when Port Lavaca was beaten. Defeat was tasted in the semi-final game 'with Canton, but the Panthers went down, fighting to the last. Weslaco had made a wonderful record, for this was the first time that any Valley team had gone to State. , Pg 78 . ,fx UEFA 1 X 1' N . a --..g,.,,n s l l 1 1 1' ' W. H. S. TRACK TEAM J. D.
