Jones 1916-1975 Thirty-seven years ago lVlr. Jones began working in the field of education. In 1970, based on his impressive qualifications and accomplishments, Mr. Jones was retained by the Wentz- ville R IV School District as Superintendent. Until his untimely death, lVlr. Jones worked hard for the students of the district to insure for the present and the future a quality education for all. Because of his efforts on behalf of the students of Wentzville, this 1975 edition of the Pow Wow is gratefully dedicated to Mr. C.H. Jones. In Memoriam Hazel Willerding, for her yea rs of service tothe school and community The world is in the grip of a blue-jeans frenzy. Once the no-nonsense work pants of farmers, Iumberjacks, and miners--and few others--jeans now strut, stride, stroll and slouch everywhere, on the job and off. They are at home in palaces CPrincess Anne of England wore them when she had her hair done on her wedding dayl and at parties tauthor Norman Mailer and actor Marlon Brando have appeared in them at black-tie affairsl. They are smuggled into Eastern Europe ian S8 pair of basic jeans currently fetches S90 on the Russian black marketl. School campuses from Omaha to Oska are so awash in a sea of unisex jeans the pants worn round the world fad, fashion, phenomenon - jeans have seized us all by the seat that one might suspect they are compulsory wear. The globe's most popular pants are today manufactured on every continent except Antarctica, and world-wide production is fast heading toward the billion-pair-a-year mark. Last year, American textile mills, working three shifts a day, six days a week, turned our more than 400 million square yards of denim, primarily for jeans. Although this was enough fabric to encir- cle the earth nine times at the equator, it fell 100 million yards short of demand. Why the jeaning of the world? A fashion is easier to follow if it is both chic and cheap, explains one manufacturer. And jeans are undeniably fashionable and af- fordable, as well as sturdy and comfortable You can dress down in S2 recycled jeans from Goodwill--or dress up in a S200 sky- blue jeans suit. Perhaps more important, jeans are an idea, a concept, a sit-on-the floor attitude. Jeans represent a casual life-style that is being adopted by a growing part of the worId, says Walter A. Haas, Jr., chair- man of Levi Strauss 8: Co. , the world's largest manufacturer of jeans. And it's no coincidence that both the life-style and the gamient itself spran out of the free-swing- ing, colorful days of California's Gold Rush. H , xx X l, .14 ln 1850, Levi Strauss, a 20-year-old Bavarian immigrant, arrived by sailing ship in San Francisco to seek his fortune in the gold fields. He brought with him a stock of dry goods including some heavy brown can- vas he planned to sell to miners for tents and wagon covers. Tents, he soon found, were not in demand, but few prospectors had work clothes study enough to stand up to the rough life of the diggings. The enter- prising young man had a tailor make pants out of his rugged canvas. Word spread that those pants of Levi's lhence Levi'si were the strongest around, and they sold quickly. Convinced that he had found a good thing, thing, Levi opened a work-clothes shop in San Francisco Knot far from the com- pany's current headquarters in the 29- story Levi Strauss Buildingl. When canvas ran out, he switched to a tough cotton fabric originally loomed in Nimes, France, called serge de Nimes, or simply denim. CGenoese sailors had long worn pants of similar fabric, known as genes, and later jeans.7 Tall tales of denim's indestructi- bility proliferated. In one story, when the coupling between two railroad cars broke, a trainman hitched them together with a pair of Levi's and made it ten miles to the next station. The truth was perha s less dramatic, but the robust work clothes made by Levi Strauss, his relatives and competitiors did in fact uniform the men who laid the rail- road tracks, rounded up the cattle, cut the forests, farmed the plains and built the cities of this fast-growing nation. By the 1950's, jeans had become the staple play-garb of children, and teen- agers began battling parents and high- school administrators for the right to wear jeans to classes. In the course of this struggle, jeans themselves became a sym- bol of defiance against authority or op- pression, whether parental or political, real or imagined. Their secret message identified youthful wearers one to another. l am one of ou--against the others. In the early 19ZO's, the civil-rights march- ers, screaming youngsters at Beatles con- certs, anti-war activists, college protest- ers and higpies--all seized upon blue jeans as t eir very own. But a funny thing hap end on the way to the barricades. Fashion dlscovered blue jeans. Suddenly, stores blossomed with jeans, not only for blue-collar workers and rebel- lious youth but for family members of all ages and all income levels. No longer were there just standard jeans--tight around the hips, with multiple pockets and double-stitched seams--but all manner of variations: flared legs, bell bottoms, cuffs, wide belt loops, tricky pockets, fancy stitching, lighter-weight fabrics, rainbow l colors. Overnight, the nation joyfully l donned jeans and was off--cycling, garden- N ing, boating, bowling, horseback riding, back-yard barbecueing. Although outraged to find themselves wear- ing the same gear as their parents, young p hotheads refused to abandon the jeans that T had become like a second skin. Instead, they wore theirs more ferociously than N ever. Holes? Patch or embroider them. l Rips? Sew a piece of braid on top. Seat gone? Salvage the part from another worn pair. Legs torn? Amputate them and flaunt the frayed edges. Faded? Groovy. The tattered look of raveled, beat-up jeans be- came another way of nosethumbing at the world of materia ism and status. But, once again, fashion co-opted its op- position. Nlachine-embroidered patches were manufactured to be sewn over non- existent holes. To fade their new jeans, youngsters bleached them, if the bleach ate a hole in the fabric so much the better. Rag peddlers sold anything made of denim at a premium to boutiques and department stores, where secondhand jeans outsold new ones, and at higher prices. The denim phenomenon quickly leaped the oceans to change the world's way of dress Governments might engage in anti-Ameri- can politics, but whole populations pulled on pro-American gants. Levi Strauss moved into the 1 60's, first exporting then manufacturing abroad. With offices in 35 countries and plants in 12, the com- pany's international division now accounts for more than one quarter of Levi's total S750 million in yearly sales. Bleu Bell, Inc., the second-largest U. S. jeans man- ufacturer, markets its Wranglers in 85 countries and produces in 17. ln Holland, the jeans capital of Europe, 40 percent of the population is reported to wear them daily. ln Italy, a recent bill- board ad showed the Creator, as depicted by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel ceiling, handing Adam a pair of Levi's. In Austrailia, 80 percent of all pants sold are jeans or jeans-type. But leave it to the French to hook up jeans with haute couture. One high-style designer devoted part of a collection to variations an the jeans theme, and the beautful people can hardly wait to pay 5100 for fur-trimmed couturier pants copied from an S8 mail- order model. Old or new, glorified or plain, jeans are likely to be around for a long time to come. Already they have succeeded where states- manship has failed: although still unable to speak the same language, the inhabi- tants of this embattled planet have at least agreed to wear the same pants. This year WentzvilIe's cross country team broke the longtime record of only four wins. Don Hutson, Stan Hauk, Ray Tutterrow, Keith Longar, Jim Heeter, Mark Moore, Jeff Longar, and Alan Brook were the Harriers who were respon- sible for the 10-3-1 record. Highlighting the season were the vlc- torles over Francis Howell and Troy, and the district meet. Ray and Don placed first and fifth respectively at the district meet, thus allowing both of them to compete in the regional meet. As Coach Johnson said, Everyone ran well, they won, and they got used to winning: therefore, they settled for nothing but the best. another victory for '76 After weeks of hard practice, the Powder Puff football sea- son was on its way. The first clash, between the Freshmen and the Sophomores, ended 6-0 with the Sophomores taking the honors. More excitement was in store when the Juniors faced the Seniors and downed them wlth the flnal score posted at 14-0. The final game of the season was a fight to the finish. The Sophomores proved to be tough competition for the Juniors, but the game ended 14-0 In favor ofthe Juniors. The Class of '76 carried off the season crown for the third year in a row. . . Oedipus rex This year's annual spring play, staged on March 12, 13, and 14, was OEDIPUS THE KING. Produced by Mr. McAdam and directed by Mr. Weinz, the play was an overwhelming success. The story of the play, written by Sophocles is this: When Oedipus was born, an oracle foretold that he would slay his own father and marry his mother. To prevent this, his father, the King of Thebes, exposed the infant Oedipus to die on a mountainside. But the baby was rescued by a shepherd and brought up as the son of the ruler of Corinth, a neighboring state. When Oedipus was a grown man, he set off to verify his identity by consulting the oracle at Delphi. Learning there of the terrible prophecy, he resolved never to return home, as he believed his parents to be the king and queen of Corinth. At a crossroads he met another traveler, argued with him, and in a fit of temper, killed him. Calming his temper, Oedipus eventually came tothe city of Thebes and found that its king had recently been killed in a foreign land. By correctly answering a riddle set to him by the Sphinx, a terrible creature who had been menacing the Thebans, Oedipus won the hand of the widowed queen of Thebes, Iocaste, and became king of Thebes himself. Iocaste and Oedipus had four children--two daughters and two sons. Oedipus and Iocaste ruled Thebes in har- mony for many years until a plague struck the city. Desperate, Oedipus consulted the oracle for advice and was told that the plague would not lift until the murderer of the former king of Thebes was found and punished. In anguish, Oedipus soon learned not only that the man he had killed at the crossroads was the king of Thebes, but also that the same man was his own long-lost father. The horrifying extent of the tragedy gradually unfolded as Oedipus realized that he had also, as the oracle had long ago predicted, married his own mother. Iocaste hanged herself when she learned the truth. Oedipus tore his eyes from his head and exiled himself forever from Thebes. 150 i cast Oedipus.. ..... Iocaste . . Telreslas . . . Shepherd . . In the darkness of nothlngness, he could feel the coolness of the water and taste on hls llps the tang of the salt. There should be water belngs, sald the Great Splrlt. And so lt was. Flrst the flsh, swlmmlng In the deep water, and then the mussels and snalls and crawflsh, lylng on the sand and mud the Great Splrlt had formed so hls lake should have a bottom. Let us also create somethlng that lives on the water, the Great Splrlt thought. And so It was. For now there were snow geese, and mal- lards and teal and coots and terns and Ioons llvlng and swlmmlng about on the water's surface. The Great Splr- lt could hear the splashlng of thelr feet and the flap- plng of thelr wlngs ln the darkness. Ishould llke to see the things that have been created, the Great Splrlt declded. And, again, so it was. Llght began to grow and spread, flrst whlte and bleached in the east, then golden and strong till lt fllled the mlddle of the sky and extended all around the horlzon. The Great Splrlt watched the llght, and he saw the blrds and flshes, and the shellflsh lylng on the bottom of the lake as the llght showed them to hlm. How beautlful lt all ls, the Great Splrlt thought ln hls heart. Then the snow goose paddled over to where she thought the Great Splrlt was, ln the space above the lake. I cannot see You, but I know that you are there, the goose began. Llsten, Great Splrlt. Thls Is good water that You have made, on whlch we llve, but blrds are not llke flsh. Sometlmes we get tlred of swlmmlng. Scmetlmes we would llke to get out of the water. 'I'hen fly, sald the Great Splrlt, and he waved hls arms, and all the water blrds flew, skltterlng along the surface of the lake untll they had speed enough to rlse In the alr. The skles were darkened wlth them. The lcon was the flrst to drop back to the surface of the lake. Great Splrlt, he sald, You have made us sky and llght to fly ln, and You have made us water to swlm ln. R sounds ungrateful to want something else, yet stlll we do. When we are tlred of swlmmlng and tlred of flylng, we should llke a dry solld place where we could walk and rest. Glve us a place to bulld our nests, please, Great Splrlt. So be lt, answered the Great Splrlt, but to make such a place I must have your help, all of you. By my- self, I have made four thlngs: the water, the Ilght, the sky alr, and the peoples of the water. Now I must have help lf I am to create more, for my power wlll only let me make four things by myself. Tell us how we can help you, sald all the water peoples. The Great Splrlt stretched out hls hand and beckoned. Let the blggest and the swlftest try to flnd land flrst, he sald. We are ready to try, they sald, and each in hls turn rose ln the alr and dove beneath the surface of the lake to look for the land they had requested, but each falled to flnd it. At last there came the llttle coot, paddling across the surface of the water very quletly. Great Splrlt, the coot sald softly, when I put my head beneath the wa- ter, lt seems to me that I see something there, far be- low. Perhaps I can swlm down to lt--I don't know. May Itry, Great Splrlt? Little brother, sald the Great Splrlt, no man can do more than hls best and I have asked for the help of all the water peoples. Certalnly you shall try. Try, llttle brother, and see what you can do. The llttle coot put hls head under the water and swam down and down and down. He was gone a long, long, long, long tlme. Then the Great Splrlt and the water creatures could see a llttle dark spot beneath the wa- ter's surface, slowly rlslng toward them. It seemed as lf they would never see the coot hlmself, but at last the spot began to have a shape. Stlll lt rose and rose, and at last the Great Splrlt and the water peoples could surely see who lt was. The llttle coot was swlmmlng up from the bottom of the salty lake. When the coot reached the surface, the Great Splrlt sald, Glve me what you have brought. The llttle coot opened hls beak so that a small ball of mud could fall from hls tongue Into the Great Splrlt's hand, for when he wanted to he could become llke a man. Go, llttle brother, and thank you, sald the Great Splrlt. The Great Splrlt rolled the ball of mud between the palms of hls hands, and lt began to grow larger, untll there was almost too much mud for hlm to hold. He looked around for a place to put the mud, but there was nothlng but water or alr anywhere around hlm. Come and help me agaln, water peoples, the Great Splrlt called. I mlst put thls mud somewhere. One of you must let me place lt on hls back. All the flsh and all the other water creatures came swlmmlng to the Great Splrlt, and he trled to flnd the rlght one to carry the mud. The mussels and snalls and crawflsh were too small, although they had solld hacks, and they llved too deep ln the water for the mud to rest on them. The flsh were too narrow, and thelr back flns stuck up through the mud and cut lt to pleces. Fl- nally only one water person was left. Turtle, the Great Splrlt asked, do you thlnk that you can help me? I wlll try, replied the turtle. It swam over to the Great Splrlt, and he plled the mud on lts rounded back, untll he had made a hlll. Under the Great Splrlt's hands the hlll grew and spread and flattened out, untll the turtle was hldden from slght. And so It was, and so lt ls. The turtle and lts descend- ants must walk very slowly, for they carry the whole weight of the whole world and all its peoples on thelr bac s. And so lt ls here at Wentzville Hlgh School that some QUA LIFICATIONS Leadershlp Serv Ice to the Student Body Academlc Achlevement Extracurricular Involvement students, invlslble to the majorlty of the student body, seem to carry the welght of the school on their backs. Both the prom and the after-prom party were held at the Mariner in Lake Saint Louis. Before the prom, many couples were seen dining at such places as Sambo's, Noah's Ark and plush places throughout the area. It was quite a change to see one's peers dressed in tuxes and formals when used to their everyday garbs of jeans and sloppy shirts.
