I PASS IN REVIEW Twcmy-six y«an of dedication, persistence, and professionalism have marked the Long and fruitful tenure of one of ihe most beloved of Weniworih Military Academy ' s faculty. To many, he is known, simply as Bear or Yogi - Major Paul Buthents. He has seen countless numbers of cadets, from all walks of life, pass thnmgb the white columns of Wentworih Military Academy, and he has touched the lives of each and every person Ite met, whether it be with his keen sense of humor or his easygoing manner. He worked as the recruiter for Oklahoma and Missouri, he taught drivert edocatioQ and mechanical drawing, as well as Mog the bead football coach, and the athletic dkiBBtar Mdi iiMMtt eoot Mfli l thoattfatte and junior college. Early in the 1983-84 school year, bear ' suffditd ' a severe stroke. His illness shook the Wentworth Military Academy society - cadets, faculty, and especially, the football team, who were in dlib iiiillffii W IttQ fMMii. fl was as if a block in the foundation of the school had been removed. He has almost totally recovered now, and although he is no longer able to be here everydi vM itilinds sporting events when he dtn. His kmg, hard irtruggle to recover, and his persistence and determinatkm have mi0i W- tt dliK lesson: Persistence and determination, no matter how hard you have to work and no matter what the obstacle, you can do anything you set out to do. Throughout his recovery, he has been accompanied by the prayers and thoughts of this school and all of his friends. I BELIEVE I EVEN LOOKED TWICE TO MAKE SURE IT WAS HE. IT WAS. THE CLOUDS IN HIS EYES WERE GONE HEAD HELD HIGH, HE LOOKED ME IN THE EYE AND SPOKE. HIS HANDS DANGLED LOOSELY. In 1921, a World War 1 casualty was interred as the first unknown soldier at Arlington Naticnal Cemetery. In 19S8, the remains of two more unknown soldiers from World War U and the Korean War were honored. In 1973, Congress first approved the burial of a Vietnam War unknown soldier Three United States Presidenu later and sill too unfortunately, niunerous delays, the Vietnam War oaknown soldier was laid to eternal rest on 27 May 1984, beside his brothen from three other wars. Who he is, we will never know, but what he is and what he stood for, we will never forget. He it the symbol of the thousands of fathers, sons, and brothers who gave their lives in America ' s longest, most ambivalent war. He stood for and will continue to stand for the honor and valor, the pride and contributions of the American soldiers who gave their lives and who fought for the KbeiMioii of other aot so fortunate, not so free people, in that distant land! On 27 May 1984, President Ronald Reagan presented this nation ' s highest honor to that soldier — The Gingressional Medal of Honor — and placed a wreath at his tomb, saying: Thank you dear son. and may God cradle you in His loving arms With those few simple, but meaningful words, tears uf pride and sorrow showered the white marble of the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, as well as the livingrooms of millions of American homes, This was a final symbol to honor those who never got the parades Sfld llM -raGCgnitioii (br tiiefr gld ud honorable deeds. The recognition they so rightly deserved! With this memorial, we honor all those who have served this great country as Veterans — and froud to be Veterans — in the armed services of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. They served to uphold the very principles with which this nation was founded and they did it and did it well ' We especially honor the heroes of the Vietnam War and they are HtROES. We had our ups and downs, but nevertheless, we did have the guidon squad and all the steak dinners that went with them.
