For needy three-score years, Colons ' Sandford Sftlen was president of Wentworth. He enjoyed one of the most enviable reeordi in the history of Amertcan education. The Academy was founded by Stephen G. Wentworth, scion of a distinguished English family and a prominent Lexington banker, in 1 880. .1! 4 nemcirial - n decea ' od ton Wiliam Wentworth, Mr. Wentworth rnmediately veste d control of ttie institution In the hands of a board of trustees composed of a duly elected representative of each of the Evangelical churches of Lexington, and a president. Colonel Sellers was cal ' ed to the new school in its first yeer and remained as its active head until 1938. Mr. Wentworth teryed.as president of the Board from 1880 until h1» deoth In I8?7. It was the firm conviction of the founder, his board of trustees and President Sellers that a miTrtary boarding school provides the most effec tive possible neans for giving young men the thorough mental, moral and physical training necessary to develop in them the highest traits ol manhood.
