Since the Summer of 1958, instructors from Wentworth Institute have been attending special courses and summer institutes in preparation for the projected cur- riculum in Nuclear Engineering Technology. These courses and summer institutes have been sponsored by the American Society for Engineering Education, the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the National Science Foundation. As a result of these prepara- tions, a curriculum in Nuclear Engineering Technology was presented for the iirst time beginning in the school year 1961-1962. President Beatty has been a moving force in the establishment of this curriculum through his work with the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Nuclear Society, and the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The list of institutions which have prepared or contributed to the preparation of those who have been involved in the development of this curriculum are as follows: Pennsylvania State University North Carolina State College Massachusetts Institute of Technology Stanford University Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute Oak Ridge National Laboratories Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies Argonne National Laboratories Shippingport Atomic Power Station Northeastern Radiological Health Laboratory The main task of development of this curriculum was accomplished by the Nuclear Committee of Wentworth Institute which was established by President Beatty in the fall of 1959 with a membership of those who had attended courses and institutes up to that time. The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission has helped to equip the necessary labora- tories by means of three grants: one for .iS10,000, one for 3l1,200, and one for 330,000 The Commission has loaned the material for the fabrication of a 5 curie plutonium- beryllium source to be used in the Neutron Howitzer. The Alumni Association of Wenmorth Institute contributed 319750 towards the purchase of this Neutron Howitzer which is now installed in one of the Nuclear Laboratories. During the period of curriculum development, surveys were conducted to deter- mine the need for Nuclear Engineering Technicians and the results indicated that work should proceed on the development and implementation of a course in Nuclear Engi- neering Technology. The program, as developed by the Nuclear Committee, was voted on by the faculty on October 31, 1960, and was included in the 1961-1962 Day Cata- logue to be offered for the first time in September, 1961. Since space was needed to house the laboratories and equipment necessary for such. a curriculum, the Board of Trustees authorized the construction of a Nuclear Science Building on the campus for which ground was broken on june 7, 1961. This Nuclear Science Building was designed by architect Robert E. johnson and was erected by J. J. Vacarro, Inc. Dedication ceremonies took place on March 14, 1962, with Gov- etnor Volpe and members of the board of trustees present. The Nuclear Science Building was made ready for occupancy for the school year beginning September 18, 1962, and from this date the laboratories and classrooms of this building have been in use.
