S ..b'llm9SQ5-'O gb' One bright September morning eleven years Q ago Miss Annie Hundley's first grade room was K .A?, 3 crowded with little boys and girls starting out 5 ' ton B great adventure. Some were accompanied by 5 fend parents, others were alone, some little Q faces were smiling, others tearstained, but every f-Q face were a look of awe and wonder. Almost every 5 hand clutched a pencil, paper, and lunch box, Qs which nothing in the world would have made the q 4,3 youngster unloose. In that company were: Ann Kerley, Anne licCollum Audrey Rice, Faye Pulp, n-W Maxine Comer, Ruth Sands, Doris Wall, Mabel Carter, y y Nellie Walker, Alvis Shelton, Joan Anderson, and , Fred Robertson. Across the hall in Miss Ruth Kempjs room were several others who had started the great adventure the year before, but,'as so many first grades do, had had to take an extra year to make the grade. They were Notre Webb, Lewis Robertson, Nancy Hanlon, and Lavernie Hand. Our most vivid memories of the first year center around the naps we use to take on quilts folded and laid on the floor, and the hours we spent - singing HI put my right hand in to the tune ef Miss Hundloy's Victrola. The next year most of us were in Liss Cer- nelia Thomas's second grade, though a few were in Mrs Roberts' room. Judith Harvey joined us during that year. ' X In the third grade Miss Frances Kemp had ,' most of us and Yrs James Rakestraw the others. If Frances Ellington and Ira Reach were added to the class, V 3. We must have learned a little geof- raphy, for we still remember drawing maps of the United States. We also enjoyed making a .model of Flanders Field and learning the poem. Ruby Cooke and Pete Trox- ler joined our ranks. Miss Helen Bolick was our teacher in the sixth grade, and Virginia Chaney and Robert Cox became members of the class. Mrs. Rankin, our present home room teacher, was our seventh grade teacher, and William edbetter our one new student. One high spot of this year was a trip to Ral- eigh in Mr. Jackson's truck. we visited the state pri- son, state hospital, school for the blind, governor's office, ann other public buildings. Governor Hoey greet- ed us in his office and shook hands with all of us. Fin- ally commencement came, and fifty-six of us, dressed in white, very proudly received our certificates of pro- motion to high school. The eighth grade was, in a sense, a new beginning, for we were starting out in high school. There were three home rein sections in charge of Mr. Meador, Mrs. Gump, and MPS. Harcy. Hr. Field had left us during the summer, and Mr, lewis had come in as principal. We were required to study English, civics, mathematics, and ag- riculture or home economics. Enjoyable experiences dur- ing that year were another trip to Raleigh as a civics project, and the home economics and agriculture field days at Camp Cherokee. In the nirth grade Mrs. Foil was home room teacher for the girls and Miss Yarbrough for the boys. Anne Mc-' wao had been in school in Madison for four ears Collum, e , , y , Cams balk bu us. Everyone was very much excited over the romance in the faculty that year, for Mr. Purgason married and brought his bride to Wentworth. When Miss Yarbrough left us before the year was out, Mrs. Purgason took her Werke This year the girls got to help with ' the Junior-Senior Banquet and had a lot of fun doing it. Mrs. Clarke and Mrs. Hardy left us the last se ester of this year, and Mrs. Wootton and Mrs, Rankin took their places. Miss Rathburn's pep talks made us win several contests on war salvage and scrap projects, Again we had romance in the faculty, for Miss Rathburn brought her lieuten- ant to visit us several times, and in February of the year married him, becoming Mrs Clarence Fowler. For the first time we organized as a class with one set of officers as follows: President, Maxine Comer, V. President, Fete Troxlerg Secretary, Judith Harvey, Treasurer, Doris Wall. We gave a program of very enjoyable one-act plays and high-lited the year with an elaborate Junior-Senior Bnaquet whose theme was a night club. Juniors honored by being chosen aa marshals for commencement were Ruth Sands, chiefg Faye Fulp, Anne McCollum, Maxine Comer, Jean Anderson, and Doris Wall. At last after eleven years of work and play, ups and downs, and varying degrees of success in money and other undertakings we became Seniors. We organized our class with Pete Troxler as Presidentg Jean Anderson, Vice-Presidentg Nellie Walker, Secrctaryg and Audrey Rice, Treasurer. Mrs..Rankin was home room teacher. Doris Miller left us in October to be married, and Elizabeth Turner soon left also. Several others of our students have married during this year and are finishing with us, they are Lucile Smith, Mabel Carter, and Ruby Cooke, This year we were glad to welcome Gladys Rice as a member of our class We had the grand experience of participating in a Musical Revue put on by the high school studen s It went over with a bang, but it was very hard for us to settle down to studying again. Another of our big events of the year was attending the Junior-Senior Banquet, which was a big occasion for everyone, We all enjoyed the Magician's tricks and roared with laughter when he cut Mr. Colley's tie t to pieces. At last realize with days in hirh our com encement has come, and we regret as well as with joy that our school are almost over.
