I think I debate very well, and someday I hope to become a great debater. My nostpinteresting experience. My most interesting ex- perience occured when I was small. I was playing with some boys a1d we decided to have a funeral. I was to let them bury me in a wash tub,but a hole was to be left for air so that I could breath. While they were gone after the flowers, a dog came along and scratched some dirt over the hole. I almost lost consciousnessbut some of the boys came back and dug me up. I get all r1ght,but it was a 'close shaven. My plans after I finish high school. I expect to enter Phieffer Junior College for two years and then go to State and finish a course in agriculture . Then I should like to become an agriculture teacher. FREDERICK GAMMON J f. My most interesting ggperiegce., I remember very distinct- ly the first day I went to school. There was no Janitor at the school, therefore the pupils had to do the cleaning. T here we shall cross the longest hill, Happy, tired, buf expectant still. O nd 'W O GLASS MOTTO Dorothy Sutton Glimb,Though the Rocks Be Rugged In our daily lives we are climbing toward some longed-Rr goal. Ofter the obstacles in our path look impassable as the rocks on the mountain garges, but if we have properly schooled ourselves for the climb,we know that all things are possible if we are determined upon success. If we can be sure that we are earnestly, steadfastly climb- ing,no rock can be too rugged for us to pass. Let us lay aside all thought of reward at the end,for it is well worth the effort requrred to climb the rocks in our pathway for the sake of the hharacter development the struggle brings to us. But the time is fast approaching when L-uh of us must press forward until we stand on the mountain peak of success, a goal which we can reasonably attain bacause in our knap- sack we have the equipment and power which comes from know- ledge. When we reach the mountain top,we shall see a much briqsus er future than we expected, and,as we experience this triun,,, we shall be as joyous as Gortez, when gazing on the wide Eipf fic after his long climb,he realized the victory which is the result of purposeful struggle. Let us ,then, climb ever onward, ever upward, though the rocks be rugged an our feet and harsh to our hold. - U I -oi- '-Tran' C' cLAss FLOWER - BLUE AND WHITE isis Edna beLancy The meaning of iris is radiating joy. Longfellow speaks of the iris in this way: nBorn in purpme, born to joy and pleasure, Thou dost not toil nor spin But makes glad and radiant with thy presence, The meadow and hhe inn! o Flower of song, bloom on and make The world more fair to win. T The white iris like the lily has always been the emblem of purity. The structure of the iris is very fragile and dem licate. The perfection of its structure makes us realize how great and wonderful all nature is. Whhn we walk among the beautiful iris it increases our consciousness of what nature has done for us. T he Greeks names the iris after the godess of the rainw bow because of its wonderful colors. These colors, rich in hue, symbolize the full and rich life which we anticipate. In peetry, the iris stands for wisdom, truth, and courage. It has been the emblem of chivalry ever since the Bays of knighthood. Chivalry means courage,a quality that wwf as a class nees, and have needed all though school. Yet,we will need even greater courage as we walk out into this new world of life, leaving our school and adventuring into all phases of endeavor which make up the comolex world of today. Surely, courage is needed and as an emblem of that willin ness to face the future bravely we carry as our symbol, the beautiful, the courageous iris. cwgs ..,g .. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1938. Rebecca Carter,Historian . gn, I-, A 1. Your maJesty,we cannot afford to take too much of your time with the dry facts of our pastgtherefore,I shall attempt only to give you what we consider the high spots in the his- tory of our class of 1958. In the year of l934,fiftyenine of us entered high school as agnorant freshmen. I say ignorant freshmen, for we really were lacking in many educational qualtties, which someday we hope to acquire, and now the moment had arrived when we were Qctually in high school. W e had come this long,lon5 way in search of Wisdom,Knowledge and Learning. High School was very different from what we had been accustomed to,and a as in everything elae, there were hardships, and difficulties. However, with the aid aid instruction of our patient teacher, Mr. Joe E. Meador,we made it through our first year,l955, and now were ready to go a little further in our travels. T he following school year,fifty-nmne of our same group entered the ninth grade, thus taking up our journey from where we had left off the year before. Among our trials and temptations,B oslogy seemed to block the road for many of us, but after much worry, and with the help of our teacher,Miss Blanche Robertson,we began to learn of the many curious things this world contains. After much hard work and a few exciting experiences, the school year,l956,endeR and our home room teacher,Mrs.M.D.Field,ur5ed us not to stop but to con- tinue our pursuit of knowledge the next year aid the years to come. In 8eptember,l956,we again took up our knapsacks and started on the long, long road to Education. To our amazes ment,we found that there were only forty of us left for some had stopped by the wayside to rest and go no further, and others had moved away and could not continue to be our travels ing companions5but,all thses discouragements did not dampen our spirits, for we were determined and had come all the way to the tenth milestone. It was during this year that our homeeroom teacher,Miss Blanche Robertson left us,and Mrs. E.H.Olarke came to help us move onward on our trip. This year's main handicap seemed to be geometry. Our geometry teacher,Miss Melba Gaskins tried very hard to make us undere stand, and after some time, the mental fog,out of which loomed 1-1 ,, ' . - . , ,... , ' . - - 4 1 .1 -4 1 ,- . . .V-. 1 'll --y,,n ht 4-sa-lf np 'P rqpw -1 'L Ui. 11.4. . circles and tr1anbles,seemed to dlS1DD68T Thls year also provlced many nev adventures, not the least of Whlch was the Junior Senlor Party We tried vely held to blV6 the 5HHlOPS a good tlne nd the joy whloh they reflected well p id us for our efforts The came the junwor Dlay H Scand Your Horn? in whlch eibht of us took Dart in dlsoleyinb our dramatic talent and trylnb to be UGables end Taylors N We also en Joyed our class 1eet1nbs which were held monthly in the homes of the students T he lollowlnb year,l957,we found that seven others were m1SSlHb from our bend of p1lQr1ws,but we were happy that thlrty three of our 5roup had come dlonb together to the last quarter of our journey At lest' We had become W proud and dignified seniorsn We found thls year th t we had more evoeriencese nd adventures tn n ever before, but we were Wlllln to face them and do the best we could,w1th the help of our teQcher,Mrs h D F1eld,we have taken Lhssons from our cl ss notto,W Cl1mo,though the rocls be rugged,H and now we st nd at the lust milestone Among the haboy occasions of this year,me recall the Junlor Senlor Party, and oause to express our gratltude to the JuHlOPS for such a lovely occaslon fur senlo ol y,W Lens R1V6TSn,WG also remember, for there wexe thirteen of us ho tool pwrt in 1 Again thls year,x 1 e enjoyef nur class meetings WhlCh have had every nonth lnform you th t ou the flfl J nlne ls who enterev school,th1rty thlef gr du ,end o of the e thlrt, three,th1rteen hate e n tobec lrom +ve f rst grade untll now W e have co W J o he road to EOUC5tlOH,Wlth such thlnbs as lols all other dlfflculties ln our W y W e have tlled to he f ltnful one courageous and to prenare our lves for the best 1n llfe It 13 on these past record tu t we feel JHStlflGd ln 1S1lDg admlttance your m jesty,1nto thls lend of Future F . . w x f. f A . 0 4 A V c.. We range in age from Henry Dallas' sixteen years, seven months and two days,to Willie Stone's twenty years, ten months and twenty-nine days. We range in height from Virgie Connor' four feet, eleven and a half inches Ccounting her high heels and her funnel-shaped hat? to Rogers Robertls six-foot ones W e range in weight from Ruth WalKer's ninty-five pounds to Rogers Roberts' one hundred and nintyefour pounds. Taking the class as one in body,of which we are supposed to be in spirit,we make up an individual ago of five hundred and fifty years - surely an age of wisdom amd power. Evident- ly the individuals of the class have aged fast. Our height is one hundred and eighty-five feet, four and one-half inches, which raises us far enough up in the world to allow us io tower above our enemies and look down upod the oncoming grade uates. Taking into consideration Rogers Rfoerts' weigh'.,we tip the scales at exactly three thousand, seven hundred and ninty-five pounds. Our hand is large enaagh to get a gooi firm grasp upon our individual concerns, for we wear size we hundred and fiftywsix glove. If we do not make a success L1 life that we desire and expect,1t will not be because we can not gain a foothold upon the worldfs battleground,by way of colossal understanding, for we wear a number ninty-eight shoe, Our head is of sufficient capacity to hold even the vast amount of knowledge we have been cramming into it for the last four years, for we require a hat that measure seven huns dred and fifty-nine inches. Indeed, what we do not know has seemed to us to be scarcely worth learning. - Jereline Talley .Q uk I,-, K' PROPHESY OF CLASS OP' 19558 Verbit Conno1,Prophet As I hold in my hand the blue and white iris which is a symbol of the ccur ge with which we advance in the future mag1ce1ly,a gazing globe appears in which the future of the 1958 Senior Class is seen F1rst,I see a moving picture from California directed by Melvin Hill There are two main pl ycrs,Mar1e Younts and Rebecca Carter Now I see,1n a short d1stance,an airplane landing It couldn't be anyone but Earl McCollum directinb a large trans portlnb plane The future changes, and we rc in New York where I see Ann Ch.mbers reading the New Yorl Times of which Edna Gillespie is the editor Across the street from the newspaper office, the radio station is located There yhe 'Kate Smlth hourn lS going on the ir Soae one is singint It is K t Smlth No,my m1Bt1K6,lt is only Edna DeLancy another stuu1o,I Let 1 blinpse of the NRhythm Trion ,made ur of Donald Durh.m,Eubene Carroll, nd Fled rick Gammon,acco1 1ed by Dorothy Snead After their perfo mLnces,Jereline Talley Wboes to townn on the ult r Again the scene cha1 es As I look olosely,a warehoz appears There,m fmt young n n is auttioning tob cco I couldn't be .nyone blt Rebels Roberts Here I see three fr iliar f1ces,Fooh Rn tr w,W illie Stone,1nd Haywood.Robert observe a hosp1tcl,vn le +here are thlee nurses StPOll1HO a round on the lawn o could tnty be but Dorothy Sutton gle Connor,1nd Lomss tr?
