v.pr-urn, ---W ff---W -f-v f'1v- f - ff- I, Um 54224 Gussie Smith, editor of our yearbook, is a graduate of Fuller elementary school, class of '44. She has been a citizen of Phillips City for four years. During this time, she has been a member of various school organizations. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she ioined the Student Council, Modern Dancers, and Phillips Iournal Staff. Being a natural socialite, she became a member of the Girls' Service Club in her 4B semester. Her ability for leadership is uncanny, because in less than two years, she became Editor of the Phillips Iournal, President of the Girls' Service Club, and was elected Mayor of Phillips City. 'Gussie's first love is dancing and she has been a fixture in Sadie Bruce's Dancing Group since she was four years old. Our editor has appeared in each of Sadie's dance reveues. In fact, her most embarrassing moment came when she slipped and fell in the middle of one of the dance routines in a big scene. Gus likes music and has a large collection of Be-Bop records. Her favorite artists are Stan Kenton, Vida Musso, and Charlie Ventura. Her favorite color is green because as she puts it, lt's the same color as dollar bills . cfzhaatfcfh mfzafz away By Gussie Smith Vemon Harvey Ir., 18, Wildroot , to his very very personal friends, first saw the light of day on March 9, 1929. Although he has only been at Phillips one and one half years, he has gained great favor with his fellow students. He is president of the Senior Class, associate editor of the Annual and of the great Phillips Ioumal and he is also a member of the National Honor Society. Prior to his years at Phillips, Vernon attended Vashon High School in St. Louis, Dusable Hi and Lincoln Insti- tute, Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky. Wildroot's ambition is to be a knight of the road who knows nothing and does nothing p conse- quently his field will be an easy one to follow. Vernon's favorite subject is mathematics. tCan you imagine a person who actually likes math?J. Baseball would not survive without his worthy approval of it tin other words, he's crazy about the gamel. He also thinks the world would be dull without his favorite color, gray. Vernon likes to dance, but he doesn't because girls are so fickle that they disgust him. However girls are still his special interest . Stan Kenton is all-right with him, but Down with Be Bopl tSee, he doesn't even appreciate good music: l. Give him Tin Pan Alley any day. If school were left up to him, everyday would be a holiday except Thursday and that day would have to strain one's brain. tDidn't some one before him say these exact words?l. His pet peeve is a conceited person. COf course, there's no conceit in his family, he has it all, smilel. All foolishness aside, to Vemon, without the Christ- mas Holidays every year, life woud be a bore. Harvey's class rating is eighteen. That's not bad for a male. The girls usually monopolize the first ten places. He was selected, among fifty two other high school editors, to attend a session of the United Nations at their headquarters in New York. lt is felt that Vemon will be a young man who will go exactly nowhere fast in life. tOf course you know l'm kidding. Vernon is one fine personl.
