She has been a citizen of Phillips City for four years. During this time, she has been a member of various school organizations. At the beginning of her sophomore year, she ioined the Student Council, Modern Dancers, and Phillips Iournal Staff. Being a natural socialite, she became a member of the Girls' Service Club in her 4B semester. Her ability for leadership is uncanny, because in less than two years, she became Editor of the Phillips Iournal, President of the Girls' Service Club, and was elected Mayor of Phillips City. 'Gussie's first love is dancing and she has been a fixture in Sadie Bruce's Dancing Group since she was four years old. Our editor has appeared in each of Sadie's dance reveues. In fact, her most embarrassing moment came when she slipped and fell in the middle of one of the dance routines in a big scene. Gus likes music and has a large collection of Be-Bop records. Her favorite artists are Stan Kenton, Vida Musso, and Charlie Ventura. Her favorite color is green because as she puts it, lt's the same color as dollar bills . cfzhaatfcfh mfzafz away By Gussie Smith Vemon Harvey Ir., 18, Wildroot , to his very very personal friends, first saw the light of day on March 9, 1929. Although he has only been at Phillips one and one half years, he has gained great favor with his fellow students. He is president of the Senior Class, associate editor of the Annual and of the great Phillips Ioumal and he is also a member of the National Honor Society. Prior to his years at Phillips, Vernon attended Vashon High School in St. Louis, Dusable Hi and Lincoln Insti- tute, Lincoln Ridge, Kentucky. Wildroot's ambition is to be a knight of the road who knows nothing and does nothing p conse- quently his field will be an easy one to follow. Vernon's favorite subject is mathematics. tCan you imagine a person who actually likes math?J. Baseball would not survive without his worthy approval of it tin other words, he's crazy about the gamel. He also thinks the world would be dull without his favorite color, gray. Vernon likes to dance, but he doesn't because girls are so fickle that they disgust him. However girls are still his special interest . Stan Kenton is all-right with him, but Down with Be Bopl tSee, he doesn't even appreciate good music: l. Give him Tin Pan Alley any day. If school were left up to him, everyday would be a holiday except Thursday and that day would have to strain one's brain. tDidn't some one before him say these exact words?l. His pet peeve is a conceited person. COf course, there's no conceit in his family, he has it all, smilel. All foolishness aside, to Vemon, without the Christ- mas Holidays every year, life woud be a bore. Harvey's class rating is eighteen. That's not bad for a male. The girls usually monopolize the first ten places. He was selected, among fifty two other high school editors, to attend a session of the United Nations at their headquarters in New York. lt is felt that Vemon will be a young man who will go exactly nowhere fast in life. tOf course you know l'm kidding. Vernon is one fine personl. 077042 acfmex i 4 0' Q . i 1 1 3 9 ! .-I-. ,A,.3A.,u , LF, Wwe Ulganfbabbns -41100515 YQUR cm BS Qumlg RED COM PI savsfg 1.35505 HQLSIESSE ffgfqf AA CROSS fm - Wg... Wbfuxle As we all know, it is the custom to place in the comer stone tokens of life at the time of the erection of a build- ing. These are written as mementoes of present day occurrences, trends, and fashions. At present, Iapan is showing both the desire and ability to improve her condition economically, finan- cially, and socially. This is said to be one place in which there has been improvement. Continental Europe and the British Isles find life most unhappy. The great Peace has not come. The great maxim, Peace before Pride, has never been even tried. In our own land, blessed with prosperity, there are troubles, strikes and injustices based on selfishness. A flying boat of 24,000 horsepower has been launched in Long Beach, California. Our President, Harry Truman, has called an extra session of Congress, hoping to improve our food situ- ation and to 'clarify our national policy on aid to Europe. In Chicago, work is progressing in the relief of the housing shortage. A new Mercy Hospital is to be erected on the near north side. Our movies have increased their prices. The down- tovm matinee price is ninety five cents. Dark Passage , Magic Town , Unconquered , are being featured. On the radio, Portia is still facing life and has been these many years. lust Plain Bill is still, like Atlas, carrying the world. Information Please and It Pays To Be Ignorant are at opposite ends of one type of program. The Quiz Kids, Superman, Leave It To The Girls, and The Family Hour all appeal to a varied audi- ence. The disc jockeys have become increasingly popu- lar and have demonstrated one new way of making a living. The Victor and Columbia companies must be very prosperous if the sale of records is any indication, in spite of Mr. Petrillo. The publishers have published shall we say, millions of pocket books of the widest possible range of titles. Our favorite songs Cof the momentl are A Near You ':Stanley Steamer Ballerina Sentimental journey Pass the Peace Pipe n The popular best sellers-also of the moment, are Postcript to Yesterday Golden Multitudes Rebel at Large Speaking Frankly Yankee Drummer Wars come and go, but the interest in style is con- stant. This winter of '47 brought a revolution in the fashion dresses and coats of the girls. So far the success of the radical change in skirt lengths hasn't been notice- able. In slang, we buried Kilroy long ago. We called for Richard to open the door, but all that's past. Now we say things are keen or sharp . Drip , dope and O Brother get an important place. Bubble gum, plastic balloons, and ball type pens lthat write on everything well except paperl are popular. So, when our descendants read great grandpa's year- book they surely will say- People were funny. QM mam 529'u4f2cz' One rule in written composition is that the subject be one of clarity with definite limits. In our study of great Franklin, Emerson and Thoreau, we found that their subjects were clearly defined. We have in our high school days seen many plans for a lasting peace fail miserably. This has brought discouragement to us. If brilliant statesmen have been unable to create an efficient peace program, what could high school stu- dents be expected to do? In one class we tried this plan which worked successfully. First, we tried daily to repeat mentally. Today I can live at peace. That means at home, on street cars, in corridors, and in class rooms. We realized that since we could not honestly like every one, at least we could feel kindly toward each person. We could hold back the sharp retort, remain calm and for the one day, put the idea of peace before our own pride. This was repeated daily, and we felt the truth of the statement that in giving consideration to others, we were receiving it. Thus, peace became not some impossible plan, but a fact that we had demonstrated. We proved to ourselves that peace was a personal matter and that we had it in our day. . -.nm f . bf' - 'G f I r 'I I SHIRLEY A.
