CLASS OF l UNE OFFICERS we .sf-1 S-if GHPM YE W eff' YLCB PA-B ow- V' ROW D N T P5 ?tOLPxNPies1de0l Olflice Yieslden N SQCWKCUY D Tieosurer CLASS HISTORY By Cyrzlla Solomon It was only by perseverance and scholastic Campaign Award many members of our class capability that the graduating class of Iune 1941 possessed the power to endure so many perplexing rules and enticements that go to make up the freshman year The Sophomore year which consists of musical linguistic his torical and geometrical storms was another difficult accomplishment As our hopes and desires of our Iunior year were nearing their completion we prepared ourselves for that degree which represents four years of honest toil Having received that degree We the graduating class of Iune 1941 do hereby place before you our Exact History If one had a chance to glance on the interior of Wendell Phillips High School four years ago on that opening day in September 1937 he would have seen the newly built auditorium and cafeteria that everyone was raving about but he would have seen a special group of students that seem to stand out from all the rest This special group which was also called Freshies or Greenhorns had beaming faces all excited over entering high school The ob server on looking at this somewhat bewildered group would never have dreamed that it would one day be one of the greatest classes in the History of Phillips Most of our Freshman year passed wth us still getting broken into the high school system. Although we did not make the headlines of our school papers, we were often represented in the small print. We also contributed our full share to school activities. As Sophomores, we buckled down to busi- ness right away. Our Sophomore class offi- cers, who led us triumphantly through that year were Wilbur Tuggle, President: Harold Iohnson, Vice-President: and Helen Roberts, Secretary. ln the latter part of that year, when Wendell Phillips claimed another Clean Up were very active in helping to bring that about At the same time however we were not neg lecting our studies for now many of the mem bers of our class were winning honors showing their studious traits that added luster to the class as a whole Our Iunior year was another stepping stone on which landed the malority of our members Some of us were st1ll holding our standards high in scholarship which gave us recognition throughout the school as well as ln Honor Society It was during this year that the well known William King a member of the Sight Saving Class won the first prize in the nation wide essay contest on What is a True Ameri can This year also marked by the swell times we had under the leadership of Conrad Cockran our lunior class President Ernestine Woody our Vice President Dorothy Sims Sec retary and Hortense Harvy Treasurer Our progress was now showing that our efforts were not wasted for we finished our Iunior year with an enviable record As the title of Senior was earned by the majority of us it had that tendency which forced us to carry our heads slightly higher for we knew that it wouldnt be long now This year of all years was packed to its utmost with clubs studies and numerous activities which the seniors took pride in being a part ot. The honor students in our class who had won pins since their year are still members of that society were: Evelyn Davis, Luella Wheat, Ella Mae Kelly, Cyrillia Solomon, Amanda Iones, Iacqueline Bell, Hattie Currie, Harold West, Ernestine Woody, Olivia Harris. Marion Marcelle, Marian Freeman, Herman Cotton, Lessie Mae Begley and Margaret Mackev. Other prominent members of our class were Virginia Martin: who is now the editor of our school newspaper. Helen Roberts, SXNY5
