IANUARY CLASS PRCDPHECY I, Style! ew Lrsten my chrldren and you shall hear Of a dream I recently had thrs year Look my chrldren and you shall see How wonderful your future IS to be Last mght as I lay ponder1ng over what the future held 1n store for the Ph1ll1ps class of Ianuary 41 feel1ng of drows1ness crept over me and I fell 1nto a deep slumber It seemed as though I slept as many years as R1p Van Wmkle for when I awakened I had aged conszderably and I was rn an entmrely d1fferent envrronment Oh' what a lovely garden I was stand 1ng 1n and there was the most beautrful creature beckonmg me to follow her' As we walked we sud denly came 1nto a changed world Cno wonder 1t s 19612 and behold' there were all my schoolmates of yester year fulf1ll1ng the1r respectlve places 1n l1fe The frrst thrng to catch my attentlon was an elab orate cloth1ng shop w1th a srgn Luke Keel and Co I dec1ded to go tn and look around and as I stepped 1n the door I was greeted by Pnnce Rrley who wanted to know 1f I would l1ke to glance over the latest gowns Before I could answer he had rushed me 1nto a room full of lovely dresses Among many mannequ1ns were and that dazzhng beauty Edna Banks The d1st1n gulshed artlsts Conrad Cochran and Allen Iohnson were srttmg along the s1de l1nes sketchmg the gown to be sent to the Glenglo newspaper of wh1ch Glendts Hambr1ck IS the edrtor I walked 1nto the next room where the models were bemg prettled up Matt1e Iones was gxvrng them fac1al massages whlle Ros1e Chappell manicured na1ls Alveder Moody apphed make up and Geraldlne Reeder curled ha1r The next room I entered was the general offrce where there were many stenographers engaged 1n vanous tasks At typewnters were Mary Sams M11 dred Lee Emma Thomas and Helen Wh1te Deval lane Weary Chnstrne Warr and Mary McClung were busy f1l1ng Can you 1mag1ne Charlotte Brown and Emma Steele takmg d1ctat1on at 150 words a m1nute'? Iessxe Blake Verna Donaldson and Kathryn V1ley are competxtors for the posztron of pnvate secretary to the Bus Mgr Henry Wllson CMay the best grrl w1nl I was 1nv1ted to look m on the sewmg department 1n order to see how the dresses were made Dora Brent and Mary Smrth were cuttmg patterns Dor1s Robtnson losre Swope and Rolhe Cutlaw were strtch 1ng away wh1le Ethel Burke Gulftha Hall Alma Bryant and Ruth Iohnson were puzzl1ng over new destgns I was told that a staff headed by Chester W1ll1GmS and Wlllram Murray was respons1ble for all the ta1lored su1ts of the shop and Ella Wash1ngton takes care of the m1ll1nery I expressed my admrratron of the store and to my surpnse I learned that Clarence Hardzn drew up the blue pnnts for 1t and Inez Harr1s superv1sed the rn tenor decoratxon Afer lmgenng a moment my steps began to wander agam I found myself stand1ng 1n front of a mansron of great grandeur There seemed to be an a1r of Celebrahon about the place so I took It upon myself to peek rn There rn the mrdst of prom 1nent socxety women stood Mrs Lyd1a Ienkms Cwe remember her as Lyd1a Black? who made a most charmmg and grac1ous hostess Governor Charles Ienkms was tn a far corner of the room d1scuss1ng w1th Senator Leon Moore fFuzzy to usl a new b1ll for the preventlon of cruelty to stray cats Hav1ng an eyeful I thought 1t was tlme for me to leave My next stop was at the Clty Hospltal where doctors Neversh1 Carter Elwood R1ley Norma H111 Roosevelt Ulmer Wlllldm Thomas and Eddxe Myles were operat mg on some unknown person Cpoor soul he ll probably be passed on to Frazler Murray to be embalmedl whlle nurses Hennetta Drxon Velma Draton Evelyn Lewrs Ann1e Wheatley Wanda Porndexter and Zeno b1a lohnson were bustlxng about gett1ng necessary equrpment for the doctors I dtdnt want to be 1n the way so I took my leave My next dest1nat1on was the new post offrce where I bumped mto Charles Iones Iohn Humphrey and John Hannah go1ng out on the1r da1ly routes Em ployed as clerks were Lou1s Murch1eson 163516 Adams Lourse Ba1ley Elmer Clatborne Leonard Hxll and Fred Slmon The new postmaster for Cook County IS Alfred Mullen There was nothmg here to hold my 1nterest so I was agam on my way As I journeyed on I drscovered that among these many new burldmngs there rema1ned rmpregnable Wendell Ph1ll1ps It was all modernrzed but rt st1ll stood as ever a symbol of h1gher educatxon and no wonder for Omega Reed 1S the prmcrpal and among the eff1c1ent teachers were Bennela Denwlddle luarnta Freeman Helen Washmgton Marthella Hutcherson and Kathleen Norns In the physlcal educatron depart fCont1nued on Page 46? . .
