The fine spirit of co-operation you have exhibited during the four short years that you have been here has been a source of inspiration to the faculty and the rest of the student body. I sincerely hope that the future will be bright and prosperous for each and every one of you. Inasmuch as your graduation marks the beginning of a new life, one in which you must take your place in this changing world, I wish to caution you that you will need the same spirit of co-operation, perseverance, willing- ness and industry that you needed while you were at Wendell Phillips. Bear in mind that there is no short cut to success. It is a long, hard road, at the end of which you will find your reward. We at Phillips feel that you have what it takes to travel this road to ultimate success. Farewell and good luck-remember that we are always interested in what you are doing. Let your motto be A credit to my school and to Effwwfff myself. FACULTY U9 --1 vw .2 -- If X I L ez' www . We fondly imagine we were most instrumental in this victory. Such talented students as Hudson Wadlington and Conrad Cochran were already beginning to make our class strong contenders for the outstanding class of Phillips. We wit- nessed the completion of the new auditorium gymnasium and cafeteria We also saw the advent of the annual basketball classic in our sophomore year Our Junior year found many members of the cla s receiving honor awards The officers in our junior year were Edward Arnold PIGSI dent and Clarence Hardin vice president In this year we were a more serious group than ever before and supported our school in every activity In the latter part of our Junior year we were among the students to welcome Mrs Bousfield as our new Principal In our senior year a sp1r1t of cooperation prevailed in the class Inspired by our 4B sponsor Mr Benson we attempted to set an example for the lower class students This was also the year we broke an established pre cedent by becoming the first class to take the Senior Prom to an outside ballroom. This was accomplished under the able leadership of our senior class officers: Charles Smith president' Eddie Myles vice-president' Addie Adams secretary' and Glendis Hambrick treasurer. Although we did not make the headlines of our school papers, we were often represented in the small print. We also contributed our full share to school activities. As Sophomores, we buckled down to busi- ness right away. Our Sophomore class offi- cers, who led us triumphantly through that year were Wilbur Tuggle, President: Harold Iohnson, Vice-President: and Helen Roberts, Secretary. ln the latter part of that year, when Wendell Phillips claimed another Clean Up were very active in helping to bring that about At the same time however we were not neg lecting our studies for now many of the mem bers of our class were winning honors showing their studious traits that added luster to the class as a whole Our Iunior year was another stepping stone on which landed the malority of our members Some of us were st1ll holding our standards high in scholarship which gave us recognition throughout the school as well as ln Honor Society It was during this year that the well known William King a member of the Sight Saving Class won the first prize in the nation wide essay contest on What is a True Ameri can This year also marked by the swell times we had under the leadership of Conrad Cockran our lunior class President Ernestine Woody our Vice President Dorothy Sims Sec retary and Hortense Harvy Treasurer Our progress was now showing that our efforts were not wasted for we finished our Iunior year with an enviable record As the title of Senior was earned by the majority of us it had that tendency which forced us to carry our heads slightly higher for we knew that it wouldnt be long now This year of all years was packed to its utmost with clubs studies and numerous activities which the seniors took pride in being a part ot. The honor students in our class who had won pins since their year are still members of that society were: Evelyn Davis, Luella Wheat, Ella Mae Kelly, Cyrillia Solomon, Amanda Iones, Iacqueline Bell, Hattie Currie, Harold West, Ernestine Woody, Olivia Harris. Cleola Penman wills her school spirit, scholastic ability, alertness, and ability to attend all classes to her brother, George Penman. Lloyd O. Smith, wills his excellent speaking ability and his position as Editor of the year book to his brothers, Paul and Robert Smtih. To Mrs. Bousfield, we acknowledge our sincerest ap- preciation for the vigorous leadership her wise judge- ment and broad experience provided us: the satisfac- tion that, perhaps her indefatigable efforts have not been in vain: the reassurance that any success we may have attained is attributed to her: and finally the reassurance that the inspiration she has been to us will live as long as the memory of this eventful Senior Year. To the faculty we leave a broad field in which to wield their implements of enlightenment, while we recognize our debt of gratitude for the aid and sym- pathy they have given us. Having thus fulfilled our duty we hereby-on this twenty-sixth day of june in the year of our Lord, Nine- teen hundred and forty-one hereunto set our hands and our seals. It has been only through your efficient guidance that we have been able to produce one of the greatest Annuals in the history of Wendell Phillips High School. This book does not contain all the knowledge which we have received, but it is typical of the ideals and great experience you have given us under your capable leadership. To our principal and faculty, we wish to express our sincerest gratitude and appreciation for having led us successfully these four years of toil and labor. We leave to our fellow comrades the spirit of good- will and may you work in harmony with the in- structors. We feel that the fundamental principles which you have bestowed us in our scholastic career has been great enough to encourage us onward to the road of success. Lloyd O. Smith xv .-' .' SPQRTS W., Y . 4 zu fi cms- . - A 12 ' , ' .v The Phillips Seniors closed their season with a last-minute win over a strong Gary five by a score of 31 to 30. The game, one of the most exciting, hectic, thrilling affairs of the season, provided many thrills for an enormous, enthusi- astic crowd. Although Captain Roscoe Iulien, a graduate of the Ianuary Class, was the only player to return from last year's sectional championship team, Phillips' Blue and Gray managed to win four out of eight league games. In the city championship playoff, our Seniors lost to a strong Calumet five. The regular team consists of Wilbur Iackson, Roscoe Iulien, guards: Louis Spain, center, Sherman Howard, Lonnie Hicks, forwards. Other regulars are William Iohnson and Edward Thompson, guards. M ,grass 'S , RP QQ X AMQQMZQ 'W rl P? Without a member returning from last year's team, the Iuniors were the surprise of the season. Captained by Iames Mitchell, the team played exceptionally fine ball throughout the entire season. Fast passing, dribbling, and pot shots marked our team as one of the outstanding inexperienced teams of the city. The Iuniors won three out of eight league games, but three of the losses were by a margin of one point. The regular lineup for the season was: guards, Iames Mitchell, William Mullens: center, Cal Clermont: forwards, Marvin Robinson and Lloyd Hale. Other members are Nathaniel Watkins and William King, forwards. Mi Gif I 5 ,Q X-is.. f QM Swmwq 7mm .V X MERMAIDS Gr, A, A, Continued receives a letter.
