1 3 pSI I ' r « ■3 m 1 II n t PRESETJnN THE. ECHOES OF ' 64 k The quest for knowledge is timeless. Time spent by mankind as he gropes for knowledge cannot be measured accurate- ly. Hidden with the secrets for the ages past is its beginning: unforseen is its end. Each moment of time is valuable. The student body of Wendell High School is learning that as minutes become hours, hours days, days weeks, weeks months, months years, years decades, and decades ages, knowledge will satisfy the needs of mankind. This educational process commences as the alarm clocks ring . . . and ring . . . to wake sleepy households. The hurried breakfast . . . the quick glance at the chapter that should have been read the night before . . . the mad dash from bus to classes . . . the routine scratching around in lockers for a lost book . . . the attentive listening or active partici- pation during the day . . . the gala laughter at night entertainment - these things characterize a student’s day. Quickly this year has passed, and each day has been a brief episode shaping the tide of events. The Echoes ' Staff has tried to preserve many of those significant moments which will long be treasured in the minds of Wendell High students. To the young men and women of the 1964 graduating class ' I congratulate each of you upon attaining a most cherished goal. The diploma that you have earned is an excellent beginning in the extremely complex world of today. Now that this goal has been achieved, each of you must set a new goal and begin work striving for a new completion. In the past each of you was working toward the same goal, that of completing your high school education. Now your goals will be varied and of many different selections. Some will continue formal education. Others will go immediately into production and defensive forces of our country. One thing, however, will be kept in common by all. No matter what goal you set for your- self, each and every one will require personal determination and hard work on the part of the indi- vidual involved. I am sure that each of you will uphold his share of the giant responsibility that is being thrust upon you by the world, and I am confident that each of you will contribute to the betterment of mankind in the years ahead. OASS HisrORy Twelve years ago a group of frightened youngsters entered the first grade at Wen- dell Elementary School. Today that same group of youngsters is prepared to face the world outside the confines of Wendell High School. What has occurred during those years to make these students, the seniors of Wendell High School, ready for this great step? Come with us as we recall the memories of our school days. The first grade was an introduction to the basic arts required in the school. Recess was an important part of this year, as was rest period; because we needed some break from the grinding course of study that we were undertaking. In the second and third grades, we continued this learning process. We learned how to write, read, spell, and count. Although we did not know it then, these were very serious lessons. The fourth grade was highlighted by the multiplication tables. We filled page after yellow page with them; however, we were well rewarded later for our efforts. Our eighth year was a year of great anticipation. We were all eagerly awaiting the coming year. Those of us who had older brothers or sisters were somewhat hesi- tant about the next year, for we had heard horrible tales of the high school teachers. High school brought new problems and new pleasures. During our freshman year we were dazed by the changing classes, the strange subjects, and the new freedoms. The courses were different, but the work was the same. We soon became adjusted to the system and began to enjoy the activities. There were a great many new things to be learned in high school! The junior year brought Christmas card sales and the Junior-Senior Prom. We know many of the citizens of Wendell will long remember the plea Like to buy some Christmas cards? The prom was the subject of much work, but we enjoyed the result- ing fun. Tiie class shared the honors of a play with the senior class in this year. The Adorable Imp was a great success and also very profitable for both classes. Our final year was filled with excitement and work. We assumed many jobs as seniors. We began with magazine sales. This activity ended just in time for the start of the organization of the Echoes. There were pictures to take, articles to write, and much art work to finish. We managed to finish it in fine style. We very much enjoyed the prom that the juniors gave us in the spring. The year was completed by graduation ceremonies. As we prepare to leave high school, we remember these moments of joy that we have experienced. We are grateful to all those who have made the past year memo- rable for us. We can never forget Wendell High School and the fun we had there. CHARLES DYER Historian MOST ATTRACTIVE Linda Raper Marshall Roberts SENIOR. We cannot help hating to go. We ' ll n ' er forget you teachers and friends, But we’ll remember that knowledge n’er ends. In joys and sorrows you have been true, To help and to guide, correct us, too. Support and background, you have been. To challenge and try, inspire and then. When we failed to do, things as we should. You were still faithful, patient and good. Many joys we have had. during our stay. Hard work and playing, have filled our days. We’ve grown in body, mind and spirit. Always our best do, whatever be it.- To lessons we learned, we ' ll always cling, A guide to us. do the right thing. Where ever we go. what’er we do. We’ll try, dear school, to honor you. Sally Buchanan, Class Poet CON As we look over and over the good years that have past. We remember that memories do last and will never fade. We get misty just saying good-by. O’er the years friendships made and lessons learned will never die. And we feel so like shouting to the world of these wonderful years. We get misty; graduation day nears Now we leave you with memory’s song; As you trace the part of the year’s gone. We hope you notice our fondest farewell, Which shows our school years were swell. The past times are ever so deeply encased in our minds. Thoughts of yesterday bring back our school days so dear. We get misty for the moment near. Dan Strickland. I, NANCY GRAVITY, leave my star performances in basketball to Jackie Hayes. I, JAN STRICKLAND, leave my bus driving ability to Bucky Hinnant and Bill Adams. Watch those ditches. We, JANE CHAMBLEE and DAN STRICKLAND, leave our musical talent to Vickie Smith and Robbie Cooke . I, SCOTT McLEAN, leave my brother Joe to carry on for the McLean family. I, BETTY FLOWERS, leave my love for boys to Betsy Horton and Patricia Anderson. I, W. T. PENNINGTON, leave my love for my sister to Don Price. We, JEAN LILES and VICKIE PAPER, leave our quiet, happy ways to Phyllis Turner and Brenda Paper. I, PATTY FIOPETTI, will my neat hair styles to Sandra Hinnant. Watch those low doorways. We, SHAPON COOKE and ANN KNOTT, will our crazy ways to Joy Wilson and Elsie Alligood to add to their own. I, JOHNNIE ALFORD, leave my tremendous size to Franklin Jeffreys since he can use it. I, CHARLES DYER, leave my size twelve shoes to Arnold Pernell in hopes that he can fill them. I, TOMMy EARP, leave my baseball glove to Steve Wade. It always worked for me. We, RAY HINNANT and LINDA HORTON, leave our love for dancing to James Scarboro. I, TED TUCKER, will my scholastic and leadership ability as well as my love for chewing gum in Mrs. Heath ' s class ' to Larry Medlin. We, JERRY LILES and LOWERY PERRY, leave our love for English to Joe Hendricks and David Earp. I, JIM BAILEY, leave my worn-out mind to Milton Prince, primarily because he doesn ' t need it. JIM BAILEY Testator MOST POPULAR Anitra Todd Jim Bailey SENfOR SUPERiAnVES MOST UKELY TO SUCCEED Sally Buchanan Charles Dyer PROPWECV Time never stops, but just marches onward into the future. No matter how much we desire it, we can never return to the past. However, we can look into the future and see what time has done to each of us. I see that JOHNNY ALFORD has become a model for men’s bathing suits. He always did have beautiful legs. JIM BAILEY is the father of two sets of triplets, all boys. All are the same height, 5’1. SID BAYNES has become the owner of a dance studio called Sidney ' s Fairy Dance Studio. SALLY BUCHANAN, our candidate for most likely to succeed, is now a dental hygienist. She sweeps up at the end of the day. As I remember, BILL COOK had a difficult time passing English and sleeping at the same time. Would you believe it, he ' s the English teacher at Whitley High. SHARON COOKE has achieved her ambition. She is a good secretary and gets to sit on the boss’s lap. Of course, the boss is her husband. Multimillionaire CHARLES DYER has turned his hand to a new profession. He has just completed a book entitled How To Be a Pest. He had good experience at Wendell. An ardent bachelor, TOMMY EARP has the largest business in Wake County, Dee ' s Pool Hall. ROSETTA EZZELL has set up housekeeping just outside Wendell. Little Rupert starts to school this year. PATTI FIORETTI owns a horse ranch in New Mexico. She has 365 horses, one to ride each day of the year. BETTY FLOWERS has now opened her home nursery, which is better known as Bruce ' s Nursery. CARLTON FULLER is Professor of Literature at State, where he makes extra money by peddling concessions. NANCY GRAVITY has written a book entitled How To Play Girl ' s Basketball. Her conclusion was just grow 7 feet tall! WILLIAM GRIFFIN has started a school for his dogs. They went to school with him so often that William decided to give them an opportunity to earn a diploma. Although RAY HINNANT is busy with his new School for Better Posture, he still has time to cart the girls around. DIANE HOBGOOD and JEAN LILES have set up housekeeping next door to each other. I understand that Diane still eats lunch with Jean. LINDA HORTON was always an ardent Ford-fan, but now she ' s driving a Corvair. I wonder why. Could it be that it is George ' s? Our quiet, reserved CELESTE JEFFREYS has become a jazz singer. The customers come, not to hear her sing, but to see her blush. ANN KNOTT is the proud owner of a refined Italian restaurant. By the way, it ' s called Annie ' s Pizza Joint. JERRY LILES is still associated with the name Bud. He owns Bud ' s Bus Line. SCOTT McLEAN is the main supplier of Britt ' s Produce Department. He always did like to bag lettuce. W. T. PENNINGTON has become a speech therapist for slow talking people: he teaches them to talk faster. His prime pupil is VICKI RARER. She always did speak slowly and quietly. LOWERY PERRY, known as the Customizer in his high school days, now owns Perry ' s Motor Parts. Our busy LINDA RARER is still going home to clean house, but she isn ' t cleaning for her mother anymore. She ' s cleaning for Phil. BRENDA RAY has added one to the population of Zebulon. She drives a ' 63 Chevy to work each day, and her husband keeps house. Shy PATRICIA RILEY was the first woman taxi driver in Wendell. Now she gets paid for all her riding around. MARSHALL ROBERTS is principal of Wendell High, where he has changed a major rule. He makes every- day Friday, so that coming to school on Monday wouldn ' t be so bad. Our classmate DAN STRICKLAND is now the minister of the largest Baptist church in North Carolina. He always did work for what he wanted. His brother, JAN STRICKLAND, has a service of his own next to the Pure Oil. He and his brother are in constant competition. Oddly Jan sells flowers. ANITRA TODD has given up her test tubes for a family. The last count was ... oh, well. Our versatile basketballer , TED TUCKER, is head coach at Duke. A sign over his office door reads, Let no man ignorant of chewing gum enter. PAUL white ' s love for cars has made him a test driver for Chevrolet. He was always good at such. And I, JANE CHAMBLEE, recline in the shade of a tree in sunny Spain, munching on an olive, for now I own the largest olive plantation in the world.
