Cl ass History The door of memories at Wendell High is closing. We have spent twelve wonderful years here. We wouldnot change any one of them. It all began in September of 1949, when an anxious but frightened group of boys and girls walked through the doors of the Wendell Grammar School Building and shyly took their seats in the classrooms of Mrs. Wells and Miss Blalock. That year words came alive, and the pencil became an instrument of great value. Miss Wooton and Mrs. High guided our learning in the second grade. We ' ll always remember the popcorn that one would receive as a reward for a high mark while in Mrs. Ethel Todd ' s third grade. We traveled rapidly then — multiplication tables, soil conservation projects, and history slowed us down very little. Then came the big day — graduation from the eighth grade. The step into high school was a big one. One that took courage and determination. However, we soon became adjusted to Algebra, General Science, and English and began enjoying the activities sponsored in high school. C ur Sophomore year was a good one. We were no longer referred to as green, but we now enjoyed chiding our unde rclassmen. We took our seats proudly that next year. We were juniors! We had a full year. It was filled with such events as our junior play, Sittin ' Pretty ; the arrival of long-awaited class rings; selling of Christmas cards; and last, but not least, the Junior- Senior Banquet. We worked hard presenting Fairyland Romance, but upon the arrival of that night we regretted none of it. At the end of the year we hated to leave Mrs. Heath. She had taught us so many things. Many of them, things that weren ' t in textbooks. Then in September of 1960, we became dignified seniors. A big title — could we fulfill it? With the capable guidance of our senior sponsor, Mrs. Cleo Perry, we made this year. We published the ECHOES, prepared for Class night, ordered invitations, and, of course, sold magazines, and gave a play. We operated a concession stand at basketball games, too. We were given a wonderful Banquet which evidenced much hard work on the part of the juniors. Juniors, we enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you for making it a memorable occasion. Now is the time for donning our caps and gowns. We hate to leave old Wendell High, but we must take our places in the world of today. We must pass through the door into the future. Goodbye and tliank you, Wendell School, for making these twelve years the best years of our lives. JEAN RAYBON Historian 10
