Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1961 volume:

[WSOtLOirADEJ. Foreword Education opens the door to a richer and fuller life in the future. When we enter high school, the door of education is thrown wide. The Administration lends a guiding hand as we go through high school years and helps to prepare us for a better life in the future. As we pass through the classes, doors are opened to knowledge, friendship, understanding, and an opportunity to pass through the door into the outside world. Also, in school life there is the door to special events. Upon passing through this door we view the past and catch a glimpse of the future. Athletics opens the door to fine fellowship. There is the excitement of winning and the disappointment of losing. Yet, sportsmanship and school spirit keep us on top. There is the door opened by school organizations which leads to greater friendship, expanding interests, rewarding experiences, and service which strengtlrens and enriches our character. By passing through the doors that are opened by education we gain much to help us live a well-rounded life. We learn much to help us meet life ' s problems in the big world and to help us lead lives of service — rich, full lives. 2 Table of Contents 3 Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1961, would like to dedicate our yearbook, in sincere appreciation, to one who has willingly given much time in the past to our problems. She has continued helping us as we struggled through this year. Our year- book is dedicated to one we have grown to love and to respect very much through these years of high school. Even though her classes seemed tough at times, in them we gained much to help us in the future. And so, MRS. PERRY, in deepest gratitude for all that you have done, our yearbook is dedicated to you. 4 ADMINISTRATION The door that opens to guidance. . . guidance of our footsteps toward a more useful life in the big world ahead. 5 Principal Youth and courage are known to go together. This country was built by men and women who were willing to take great risks. It ' s time for our youth to take these risks in our own community. This older generation is doing nothing to keep our youth in this community. Our graduates are leaving us. They are living in other areas. Look about you and observe. If there is one lesson you might learn, learn it well. Nothing in this world is worth any price of value when it must be gained at the cost of expediency, corruption, and on the misfortunes of others. It ' s time that youth take a stand and do something for yourselves if you want a good community. This pass-the-buck generation and our civic hitch-hikers are sitting by a fire and dreaming. 6 Mr. Carl Grad Principal High School Faculty MRS. CLEO G. PERRY Science MRS. A. S. FEATURES The door in the midst of routine days at Wendell High that opens into more colorful times . . . to a glance at the future. . .to a view of the past. 9 Cl ass History The door of memories at Wendell High is closing. We have spent twelve wonderful years here. We wouldnot change any one of them. It all began in September of 1949, when an anxious but frightened group of boys and girls walked through the doors of the Wendell Grammar School Building and shyly took their seats in the classrooms of Mrs. Wells and Miss Blalock. That year words came alive, and the pencil became an instrument of great value. Miss Wooton and Mrs. High guided our learning in the second grade. We ' ll always remember the popcorn that one would receive as a reward for a high mark while in Mrs. Ethel Todd ' s third grade. We traveled rapidly then — multiplication tables, soil conservation projects, and history slowed us down very little. Then came the big day — graduation from the eighth grade. The step into high school was a big one. One that took courage and determination. However, we soon became adjusted to Algebra, General Science, and English and began enjoying the activities sponsored in high school. C ur Sophomore year was a good one. We were no longer referred to as green, but we now enjoyed chiding our unde rclassmen. We took our seats proudly that next year. We were juniors! We had a full year. It was filled with such events as our junior play, Sittin ' Pretty ; the arrival of long-awaited class rings; selling of Christmas cards; and last, but not least, the Junior- Senior Banquet. We worked hard presenting Fairyland Romance, but upon the arrival of that night we regretted none of it. At the end of the year we hated to leave Mrs. Heath. She had taught us so many things. Many of them, things that weren ' t in textbooks. Then in September of 1960, we became dignified seniors. A big title — could we fulfill it? With the capable guidance of our senior sponsor, Mrs. Cleo Perry, we made this year. We published the ECHOES, prepared for Class night, ordered invitations, and, of course, sold magazines, and gave a play. We operated a concession stand at basketball games, too. We were given a wonderful Banquet which evidenced much hard work on the part of the juniors. Juniors, we enjoyed it tremendously. Thank you for making it a memorable occasion. Now is the time for donning our caps and gowns. We hate to leave old Wendell High, but we must take our places in the world of today. We must pass through the door into the future. Goodbye and tliank you, Wendell School, for making these twelve years the best years of our lives. JEAN RAYBON Historian 10 WITTIEST Veronica Gay Johnny Liles Senior MOST POPULAR Jean Ray bon Glenn Spell Superlatives Colors Blue and White Flower White Rose Motto We build the ladder by which we climb. Poem The curtain is softly dropping down To end our days at Wendell High; And the stardust of memories Is drifting from the sky. Our paths will soon be parting, Each pressing toward a different star; But we ' ll always have these memories Wlierever we are. Memories of all the good times, Memories we hold so dear; Of friendship and learning, and even now. One can hear a grandstand cheer. There were clubs and organizations. Football, basketball, and baseball too; There was the great joy of winning And the losses that made us blue. For those who misbehaved And those who kept up a rattle. There ' ll always be the memory Of a teacher and a paddle. As we tread through this stardust of memories. We could recall much more; But now we must move forward. The Future is knocking at our door. NANCY MEDLIN Poet Song (Tune: I DON ' T KNOW WHY ) We are the class Of nineteen sixty-one And our task here Is almost done. WeUl remember the times. The good and the bad; And as we leave. We ' ll be sad. To think this is the last year We ' ll be here; For we ' ll go separate ways When this school starts next year. Teachers we leave you With hearts filled with gratitude Dear Wendell High, We love you. MALOYE JO RICHARDSON Song Writer 12 MOST ATTRACTIVE Joy Baker Johnny Sanders Senior MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Nancy Medlin Glenn Spell Superlatives Last Will and Testament STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA COUNTY OF WAKE We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-one, of the afores aid state and county, being of sound mind and in full possession of our faculties, do make, declare, and publish this, our Last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows; all wills other than this to be null and void. ARTICLE I To Mr. Grad, our principal; to Mrs. Perry, our sponsor; and to the Faculty; we leave our deepest gratitude and esteem and our ever increasing respect for their assistance and guidance throughout our years at Wendell High School. ARTICLE II I, VIRGINIA PRICE, leave my entwined love affairs to Marveen Addleton and Debbie Phillips, who re ally do not need any more. I, JOHNNY SANDERS, leave my position as Wendell ' s chief pest to Richard Sykes. We, GLENN SPELL and BUDDY CAGLE, will our snowbird abilities to Keith Marshburn. I, JANE STARNES, leave my ability to talk constantly to Linda Nowell. I, EDDIE BARHAM, bequeath my love for bookkeeping to Herbie Mantych. We, DREXAL GAY and EARL HARRIS, leave our quiet ways to David Taylor and Mike Larson. I, RAY MARTIN, leave my over- abundance of height to Harry Rogers. I, JEAN RAYBON, leave my petite ways and ready smile to Carolyn Johnson. I, CLARENCE TODD, leave my dare-devil driving to Billy Dean and Eddie Williams. More Fireball Robertses? I, MALOYE RICHARDSON, leave my singing ability to Ilene Horton. Make use of your talent, Ilene. I, CHARLES UNDERHILL, will my way with the women to Jimmy Liles. I, WILLIAM SMITH, leave my bus to Margaret Johnson. Maybe she will be able to drive it by next year. We, JIMMY MOHISER and DOUGLAS MULLEN, leave our desire to finish school to Alvin Flowers. We, MARGARET AYSCUE and PATRICIA GREEN, leave Johnson ' s Drive-In on Sunday afternoons to Jane Baynes. Hold down the fort for us, Jane. I, DOROTHY ANDREWS, leave my love for chewing gum to Vicky Alford. I, NANCY MEDLIN, leave my neat hair style to Patricia Gay, who does not really need it. 1, KAY HIGH, leave the Staff Room to John Spell. Good luck, old boy. I, JOYCE JOHNSON, leave my blonde hair to Nancy Bunch. Does she need it? Of course not! I, LAURA HINNANT, leave my flirty eyes to Alice Fuller. Use them to a good advantage, Alice. I, JOY BAKER, will my ability to attract short boy friends to Kay Pennington. We, REBECCA HARRIS and EMMA BUNN, leave our ability to go steady to Jo Ann Taylor. I, CAROLYN SMITH, leave my curly hair to Billie Jean Johnson. I, SUE BUNN, leave my love for rambling to Jo Ann Hinnant and Betty Jo Tessinear. I, LINDA PAINTER, leave my many jobs as Treasurer to Maxine Brown. She always did love to spend other people ' s money. We, JOHNNY LILES and RONNIE GAY, needing all of our possessions, leave Wendell High School to the mercy of the rising Seniors. VERONICA GAY Testatrix 14 Senior MOST ATHLETIC Joy Baker Buddy Cagle BEST ALL AROUND Jean Raybon Glenn Spell Superlatives Prophecy The door of opportunity has opened to my classmates of Wendell High School. It seems as though everyone has continued their individual way and has reached their long -sought- for goals. JOY BAKER, the most attractive of the class, is now teaching in an elementary school. One could not say that she is an old maid, but she just cannot decide which little car rides the best! VIRGINIA PRICE is now a happily married housewife with four children. She does not have to ride toZebulon every afternoon, since she now lives in Zebulon. I hear that JOHNNY SANDERS has not changed a bit. He is still able to talk everybody into anything. I guess that is why he is a successful salesman for the company printing How to Make Life a Barrel of Fun. ' ' Yes, the fragrance of the class, GLENN SPELL, still drowns himself in after-shaving lotion. Girls ' heads are turning like they did at Dear Ole Wendell High, because of that he-man aroma that he possesses. By the way, GLENN is still driving the dearly loved Clipper Ship. Now CHARLES UNDERHILL does not have to ride to Zebulon every morning before school. He has a grocery store in Zebulon and has several little UNDERHILLS working for him. DOUGLAS MULLEN has continued blowing his saxophone and is making his own records. His latest album is entitled There ' s No Need to Worry. EDDIE BARHAM is still trying to convince people that he is telling the truth. He is doing this in the court room as an outstanding lawyer instead of as a pupil at Wendell High. CAROLYN SMITH, a quiet one of the class, is his secre- tary. Our classmate, REBECCA HARRIS, is still very quiet, but the reason for this is that she is so busy with her six children that she has no time for conversation. MALOYE RICHARDSON is now a cheerleader for the Redskin football team. It seems that one of the former players of Wendell has turned pro. Incidentally she weighs 135 lbs — unbelievable, isn ' t it? The sisters of the class, SUE and EMMA DORIS BUNN, have continued to get along as well as they did in high school. They are now teaching family relation classes in the Home Economics Department. It is widely known that JIMMY MOHISER is a big success. He has a new remedy called The More YouEat the Slim- mer You Get. Too bad he did not pass it out in homeroom, isn ' t it? VERONICA GAY has kept up her witty ways, even while teaching French in the elementary grades. She is now driving buses after school for a little extra money. She always did like money. BUDDY CAGLE, the most athletic of the class, seems to have continued his interest in sports. He is now coaching a little league baseball team. Incidentally it is a girls ' team. He always did like the girls, didn ' t he? Multibillionaire CLARENCE TODD is still impressed with the new cars. His new car, the Big C, to which he may attribute his wealth, outsells and outrides all others. I hear that WILLIAM SMITH has a cabinet shop in Corinth Holders. He has loads of business because of all of his old flames living there. It seems as though EARL HARRIS is Howard Johnson ' s chief competitor these days. I guess it all started at the Beacon, didn ' t it, EARL? Because of her love of chewing, chewing gum in class, DOROTHY ANDREWS has started a chewing gum factory of her own. It is selling rapidly, because it is guaranteed to be invisible to teachers. Mr. America our own JOHNNY LILES, has won this title because of his enormous dimples. He has pretty sparkling eyes also, doesn ' t he, girls? JOYCE Johnson ' s address has changed from Wendell route to Corinth Holders. It seems as though she liked that neighborhood during her high school days. PATRICIA GREEN and MARGARET ASYCUE have recently published a book How to Have Fun in High School. They seemed to have done a good job at it while in high school — remember? It has been reported that NANCY MEDLIN is now a professor at Duke University. She teaches everything from Home Economics to Medicine. Keeping up her reputation, isn ' t she? JANE STARNES is now chief typist at Monk -Henderson Tobacco Company. She is known as Mrs. Nowell. Taking over Mrs. Heath ' s job as teacher of French and English is LINDA PAINTER. She had some experience her Senior year — remember — we all failed! As a result of such unlimited experience as a secretary in school, JEAN RAYBON is one of the chief competitors of Britts ' Grocery. Experience helped, didn ' t it? DREXAL GAY and RAY MARTIN seem to be keeping their good safety record. DREXAL is working with his father in the oil business and RAY MARTIN is a patrolman. LAURA HINNANT is now modeling for Bob Cummings. She really made an impression when we had our pictures made , didn ' t she ? And I, KAY HIGH, having lost my love for Cherry Pie and the smell of Old Spice, remain an old maid. However, I am the editor of the nation ' s most-read newspaper, The Gold Leaf Gossip. Most of my reporters are bridge players.
