QjluzJ i - A- i JL) mJx! fi- , Tk !%Q Eckoa Presenting Spjfcfe Foreword On May the twenty-eighth in 1960, We the Senior Class will graduate, And leave behind us, Wendell High. After a year or two, When you have nothing to do Then pick up this book, And take a quick look At the symbols and signs And the pleasant times Of our life at Wendell High; First come the faculty, Friends, And follies. Not to be forgotten are of course: Assemblies, Lectures, Et cetera . . . Stock room, Detention hall, And the everlasting ringing of bells, All of which we will remember quite well. So as you flip through these pages, And recall some of the stages. . . Think of your times at Wendell High. The Editor 2 Contents Dedication Administrate Classes k. Organizations Athletics Features Advertisements 4 5 9 27 37 41 49 3 Dedication In deepest gratitude for her constant endeavor and sincere willingness to guide us in attempting greater goals in the world of knowledge, we, the Seniors of 1960, dedicate this year- bookto MRS. ROLAND HEATH. We knowthatwe shall always remember her endless determination to make us better and wiser citizens. 4 Principal Much is being said about the future of our youth and the responsibilities that they are to assume in this gener- ation. To many of our boys and girls leaving school, education will hold the key to their purpose or success in life. I feel that we have exposed many of you to this key of your security and your life ' s ambitions. But when I look back and review the men and women who have left Wendell High School, I wonder if we need not hold more than just security for ourselves. Should not life offer more than happiness for ourselves? Should we not make a generous contribution to the happiness of others and incidentally to ourselves, without the hope of something in return? Must we always be rewarded for our services rendered? To each of us shall come the challenge to render a service to our fellow man which lacks selfishness and brings us a light-hearted heart and a contented mind. Civic agencies, social and welfare, display a list of volunteer names of those who are giving time and their efforts beyond the call of duty . . . public spirited citi- zens, who serve without the thought of pay. This is the service we cannot teach. This is a service you can render in your generation. This is service at its best. CARL E. GRAD Principal 6 High School Faculty MRS. CLEO G. PERRY MR. G. T. With mixed emotions, we began our first day of school in September of 1948. The rooms of Mrs. Wells and Miss Blalock were filled with many happy faces and some tear stained ones. Becoming adjusted to the school routine caused the years in grammar school to pass quickly. However, we will never forget the time when we went to Raleigh and visited the fire station. We really had a ball sliding down the fire house pole. Suddenly we found that we had reached our goal of the past eight years — Freshmen in high school. We were very proud to be called green freshmen and as time advanced, we began to see our dreams materializing. Amidst the struggles of Algebra II and Biology, our Sophomore year unfolds vividly in our minds. Our Junior year holds many memorable events for us. We began by selling Christmas cards. We will never forget our play, Faith, Hope andFlarity, especially the antics of Blodgett. During this year, we, also, received our class rings. However, the most memorable occasion was to come — the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our theme, Song in My Heart, furnished us with abeautiful banquetandwe enjoyed every minute of it. By the end of the year we were ready to become Seniors, and we were grateful to Mrs. Heath for her help and guidance, which she so graciously had given us. Seniors at last! Finally we found ourselves in the Senior class with our capable sponsor, Mrs. Perry. This year has been filled with such things as selling magazines, working on the annual and producing the Senior Play. The Juniors gave us a thrilling banquet and we enjoyed it tremendously. Even though all these things have kept us quite busy our Senior year, it has been an enjoyable one which will remain dear in our hearts. And now we, the Seniors of 1960, turn and begin our recessional, a recessional that will lead each of us down different roads. Lynda Hinnant Historian 42 Senior Superlatives WITTIEST joy Nowell Sonny Coley MOST POPULAR Nan Phipps Sam Bailey Poem As we, the Seniors, leave Wendell High, Many will shed a tear. For we ' ll never forget the wonderful times That we have all had here. As we toiled along in lower, grades, We never thought we ' d miss The fun we ' ve had in this old school, The happiness, the bliss. As we travel down the road of life, We ' ll never forget this day, Or the sports, the friends, our teachers dear, The Prom, the Senior play . No matter where our paths may wind Or how many things we see; Thru all the years, if we search, we ' ll find This is where our hearts will be. Sonny Coley Poet Song Now has come the time for parting, Now has come the time to say goodbye. We can truly say we ' re grieving That we have to leave Dear Wendell High. Wendell High, you ' ve known our sorrows, So we know that you have shared our tears. You have given us happy memories. You have been our friend for many years. So we ' re hoping tonight you ' ll hear our plea And know that here our hearts will always be Loyal to you (This is so true) We will be . And even when we ' re gray and aging We will still love you, Dear Wendell High.
