We began our struggle for knowledge with the help of our first grade teachers, Mrs. Wells and Mrs. High. The third grade was a busy year. We worked hard selling candy and tobacco to help pay for a new slide. However, it was just our luck that the next year they de- cided we were too old to slide. As time slipped by, there were parties, chapel programs, and trips. We ' ll never forget the day we visited the Fire Tower in Knightdale. After climbing the tower, George said, This is probably the nearest I ' ll ever get to heaven. One day while in the seventh grade we were all feeling mischievous. Miss Lessie caught us playing pass-it-on and gave each of us a big lick. The years passed, and suddenly we found ourselves in the eighth grade. After presenting our play on North Carolina, we visited the Planetarium in Chapel Hill. High School was a big step in our lives. Algebra and General Science were every- one ' s headache. In Physical Education the girls enjoyed drilling on Academy Street, singing songs like Battle Hymn of Republic and The Marine ' s Hymn. In our Sophomore year things were easier for us, for we had become adjusted to the many hardships of a high school student. Our Junior year began with our selling Christmas cards. We will always remember our Junior play, Hillbilly Courtship, especially bashful Wash Jeddo. Later that year we received our class rings. We can not think of our trip to Williamsburg without re- membering that the bus broke down in Zebulon and Rocky Mount. The most outstanding event of the year was the banquet. Our theme was Rendezvous to the Stars, and we spent many hours preparing for it. Finally! We took our seats in the Senior classroom, with our sponsor, Mrs. Perry. This last year was really a busy one with selling magazines, working on the Annual, putting on the Senior Play and many otherthings. Wendell was very proud for College Day to be held here. The Juniors gave us a beautiful banquet and we thoroughly enjoyed it. As we walk down the aisle tomorrow night for the last time, we realize that we will be stepping into another phase of life in which we will begin working toward new goals. FAYE HINNANT Historian Superlative WITTIEST GEORGE PLEASANTS SHIRLEY PRIVETTE MOST POPULAR HENRY UNDERHILL BETTY PURYEAR ( ,la.AA The time has come When we must part, But memories of here Will stay in our heart. As years will pass And we each go our way, We ' ll remember the good times Of each good day. cem As we stop to think, Tears fill our eyes. We ' ve ended our childhood, The best part of our lives. To our school, friends, and teachers We ' ll say our last good-bye; And we ' ll never forget Dear Wendell Hi. SHIRLEY PRIVETTE Poet We ' ve had to give a little, take a little, And sometimes break the rules a little, That ' s the story of the dear old school that we love. We ' ve tried to learn our Algebra And English One, Two, Three and Four. But if the world is proud of us, We ' ll have to learn much more. Our teams have won a little, lost a little, It makes us have the blues a little, To think of leaving this dear old school that we love. We leave to you, the Juniors, All our Memories Arid hope that you can carry on for The Class of ' 59 Of Wendell High that we love. I, BETTY ALFORD, leave my pleasant memories and good times to all in the Junior Class, hoping their memories are as pleasant. BETTY ALFORD MELVIN HOLLIFIELD T est ators Prophecy My how time marches on! Ten years can certainly make a difference. It was great to meet our classmates of 1959 back in our old homeroom at Wendell High. It seemed just like old times — Why, there was BETTY ALFORD, straight from New York, where she is now Editor of the New York Times . We remember her as the very efficient Editor of the Wendell Hi -Life , our school paper. JIMMY BATTEN has gone into the candy business. His chief product is Sugar- Daddies. Mrs. Billy Wheeler, whom we knew as FAYE ALFORD, is now the successful owner and operator of Fay ' s Beauty Shop. JOHN CURTIS TODD now has his own comedian show. He got his first break, playing Wash in Hillbilly Courtship , our Junior play. I hear that FAYE HENNANT is making arrangements for a personal appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, since being crowned Miss America of 1965. HILTON MAYE and ARTHUR MACE are now running mates on the Washington Redskins ' football team. They never could stay off the football field. SHIRLEY PRIVETTE is now owner of the National Weight Reducing Gym. Of course, she is one of her best customers. She now weighs 135 pounds — unbelievable, isn ' t it? NED PEARCE has accepted a life-long job with the Wendell Police Department. He is also a member of the National Pesters Club. TEMPIE GRIFFIN is now Governor Hodges ' private secretary. She is finally putting her arguing ability to some use. (She ' s debating in politics for Mr. Hodges!) How To Get Along With Others , a newly published book by BRUCE MARSHBURN and MELVIN HOLLIFIELD, is being widely read. They always did get along well to- gether ! BETTY PURYEAR is now driving her own 1962 souped up, Ford convertible along the speedways. She has become the first woman to cap the title, The World ' s Racing Champion. She always could handle a car! Our classmate, HENRY UNDERHILL, has become famous as the founder of the Beauties of America Club of which he is the only male member. He never could resist girls, especially out-of-town girls. LINDA LONG is still asking, May I help you? She now has her own store, Long ' s Style Shop, in Wendell. Remember the old saying, Experience is the best teacher! It seems that the grocery business is really thriving. The one -and-only, GEORGE PLEASANTS, now has a grocery store which competes with his brother ' s. FAYE RAPER and NANNIE GURLEY finally decided to live a little — They ' ve joined the WACS! I guess we have also changed for here am — I, BARBARA ANDERSON, riding high as an airline hostess with the Pan American Airlines. And I, TIM LOVELACE, president of a large insurance firm and happily married with twelve children, still going for things in a big way!
