TODD TERRY TURNER HENRY UNDERHILL MRS. MAE HEATH Sponsor Class History Before me I have the Crystal Ball of the Past; and as I gaze into it, I see many events which have played a great part in the lives of the Seniors of 1958. In September 1946, an eager but rather scared group of girls and boys entered the first grade. Mrs. Wells and Miss Richardson helped us accustom ourselves to our roles of big girls and boys. The years slipped by, and suddenly we were in the eighth grade almost ready to take the big step into high school. Oh, how we all looked forward to that step! Then in September, 1954, we became Freshmen. We were rather green at first, but gradually we felt an active part of high school life, when we saw our own classmates participating in sports and other activities. The Crystal Ball shows a swift passing of time, and now I see plainly our Junior year. That year we really began to collect memories. By that time we were a small, but very close class. We will never forget our Junior play Ready Made Family , especially dear old Floratio. We were very proud of our class rings which we received that year. Our trip to Williamsburg was a very interesting one; we really had a lot of fun. The most memorable event of the year was the Junior-Senior. Our theme was Moonlight and Roses, and we spent many hours preparing for it. Our work was not in vain, for it was truly a beautiful banquet and dance. We all were very grateful to Mrs. Heath for all she helped us to accomplish. In September 1957, we took our places in the Senior homeroom along with our able sponsor, Mrs. Perry. It was hard to believe that we were at last Seniors. This unforgetable year was really a busy one with working on the Annual, putting on the Senior play, selling magazines, and numerous other things. We really had a time on our trip to Washington, D. C. We felt as if we had never walked so much in our lives, but we really enjoyed all the sights. The Juniors gave us a wonderful banquet, which we thoroughly enjoyed. At last the Crystal Ball shows nineteen Seniors in caps and gowns, receiving their diplomas. We are finally ready to take our places in the world, and we hope the future will be as kind to us as the past. NANCY ROGERS Historian Class Song Our hearts go back again To Wendell High; All our memories take us To those sweet yesterdays, Wonderful by-gone days, When we were carefree and gay. Dreams of those happy days Bring back sweet mem ' ries, Wonderful Memories Of Wendell High. Why, those were classmates of mine at Wendell High School . Yes, there ' s LARRY MARTIN in Hollywood making pictures of girls only. I see he has run Robert Cummings out of business. I see that PATTIE JO RICHARDSON just couldn ' t leave Wendell. She ' s back teaching and coaching the girls ' basketball team. They ' ve finally won the state championship. HILLIARD PRIVETTE found it hard to leave Wendell too. He is the owner of the new Serve Yourself Drug Store. I see that JEANNE WHITE is the Editor of the Wendell paper. It ' s new name is The Gold Leaf Gossip. JOE LYNN LEDFORD is owner of the big cattle ranch in Texas on which are as many oil wells as heads of cattle. For the latest in hair styles go to the Beauty Box, owned and operated by Miss PEGGY JOHNSON and Mrs. Shirley Gresham, formally Miss KAY SANDERFORD. I see that BETSY DEAN is now teaching music in Wendell. She has taken Mrs. Herndon ' s place. NANCY ROGERS is now coaching football at North Carolina State College. I remember our Junior year when she walked around all day with a football uniform on. RUPERT MAY has finally won the Heavyweight Boxing championship title of the world. GEORGE NOWELL has signed a contract with the Washington Red Skins to play football with them as long as he wants to. WALTER SCARBOROUGH is the top surgeon at Duke Hospital, and BETSY FULGHUM is head of the Nursing Department. Mrs. Floyd Davis is living in Wendell with her husband and twelve children. We knew her as MARIE LEWIS. JO ANN JOHNSON is secretary for Byrd ' s Furniture Company in Raleigh. Her husband Billy Ray Byrd, is owner. D. V. SMITH is owner and operator of Smitty ' s Drive-Inn Grill in Eagle Rock. Since Mr. Murphy ' s retirement. Miss CAROLYN DALE has taken his place, teaching mathematics. Miss FRANCES LEDFORD is now secretary for the biggest business firm in Raleigh.
