r 954 Editor PAUL PITTMAN Business Manager JOYCE BOYKIN ‘P%e4 c«ttecC 6 cf Se can. e cteCC Sc aC Through the idealism of her personality and the inspiration of her freindship, Mrs. Ruth Wall, has taught us — not only the significance and beauty of language — but the truth and beauty of life. In her classroom work, the greatest benefits are found not in the subject mat- ter taught, but in principles of noble living. It is with pleasure that we dedicate ECHOES OF ' 54 to one who so well deserves it. SeAool Seated; Mrs. Cleo Perry, Mrs. A. S. Johns- ton. Standing: Mrs. E. T. Boyette, Mr. H. H. Boling, Mr. L. C. One morning as I was reading the paper I came across an article which read Home Town Girl Makes Good. This article was referring to one of my classmates of 54. By reading it, it made me think about each one of my classmates so I decided I would write a book and name it Ten Years After Graduation. Here is what I wrote John Chamblee, Billy White and Wayne Raper are instructors at the N. Y. School for Safe Driving. After all, they have had plenty of experience. Jerry Lovelace is a well known preacher and Shirley Johnson is helping him in his religious work. Esther Harris is fashion designer and copywriter for Ivey- Taylor’s in Raleigh. She can still chum around with Virginia Long who is physical education teacher at Cary High School. Owners of the Three Sons Drive-In Theatre are Frank Starnes, Graham Dean, and Elmore Stott, who sell season tickets to teen-agers. Wonder why? ?? Joyce Boykin writes the Joyce’s Advice to the Lovelorn in the News and Observer. By the way, she has changed her name to Mrs. Bobby Nowell. Harold Rogers, Paul Pittman and Joe Dean are playing football for the Washington Redskins. Robert Raybon is driving a bus for the Trailway Bus Company. Kenneth Nowell, our senior class president, is a famous psychologist at a mental institution in Chicago — always knew with his ability he would go places. Mrs. John Williamson and Mrs. John Ashley Hinnant better known as Peggy Mitchell and Millie Fuller, are workers at the Revenue Building in Raleigh. Betty Lou Richardson and Marie Massey are teaching the Arts of Basketball to any- one who wishes to learn, during their spare time from Secretarial Work. Milo Horton is a successful tobacco farmer with his father. Yvonne Dean and Bobby Horton are instructors at a deaf and dumb school — gee, I can’t understand this, for at school they were always talking. Mrs. Johrmy Gay, the former Sue Taylor, is a model at the N. Y. Modeling School during her spare time — always knew her height would take her places. Beaman Scarboro and Charles Clark are professors at State College — still pulling for State. Jo Ann Roberts is owner and operator of Robert’s Beauty Saloon — well, at least, she has tried many hair styles. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Raper, Mrs. Raper, the former Barbara Archer, are happily married and are living at Lizzard Lick. Judy Lane is an acttess at Hollywood, and boy, is she giving Marilyn Monroe com- petition. On a T. V. program tonight I saw Harry James’ Orchestra and who was playing with him — none other than Tommy Bunn and Claud Hull. Mary Frances Fuller, Annie Mae Crawford and Kathleen Earp, better kno yn as the Three Madams are very prosperous in their business of Fortune Telling. Linda Nowell is an old-maid school teacher at Hugh-Morson High School — I always knew she would be left out because of her slowness. Ollie Ray Baker, Jack Lewis and Roger Phipps are owners and operators of the Blue Star Gambling Casino in Nevada. Dean Richardson and I, Faye Driver, are teaching the arts on How To Get a Man and Keep Him — we have had plenty of experience on how to keep them. PROPHET - F. Alford, K. Alford, M. Alford, S. We, the seniors of ' 54, have finally reached our destination for which we have en- dured many struggles and hardships for the past twelve years. In September, 1942, as we entered the first grade with a great ambition to learn, we had a tough struggle with our ABC ' s and learning how to read and write. Out elemen- tary teachers aided us greatly in achieving these tasks. The first eight years of our school- ing passed very quickly as we made much progress and advanced to high school. As we entered the ninth grade in 1950, no one could have been any prouder. At first it was very difficult for us to get adjusted to high school, but after a short while we began to make much progress. We shall never forget the many good times we have had together and the classmates that have come and gone. We will always remember our ninth and tenth grade teachers who helped us in getting adapted to high school life. During our Junior year, we gave the Junior Play, Best Seller, under the direction of Mrs. Elwood Perry. In May we went to Cary for Career Day, which everyone enjoyed very much. Then came the time for the Junior-Senior Banquet for which we had all looked forward and made many plans. Finally we became dignified seniors, the goal for which we had worked eleven years. We had as our sponsor the faithful and highly esteemed Mrs. E. T. Boyette. Dur- ing the second week of school we received our long-awaited class rings of which every- one was very proud. Soon afterwards the class sponsored the Halloween Carnival. In November we went to Williamsburg, one of the trips to which we had all looked forward. Mr. L. C. Murphy and our sponsor, Mrs. E. T. Boyette, accompanied us on the trip which everyone enjoyed very much and had loads of fun. At last March came and we took a trip to Washington. We shall never forget this trip when we toured the historical places of Washington which we had previously read about. In May we shall receive our diplomas and then go out into another phase of life. With the help that we have received from our teachers, we feel that we are prepared to lead a successful life and to undertake any task of the future with high hopes and deter- mination. HISTORIAN- Classmates one and all. We approach life ' s narrow road. Now each must go on alone. And each carry his own load. You ' re the school whose memory Lingers in our hearts. Wendell High School, Wendell High School We have named you. As we look behind us. O ' er the path we have trod. We thank our parents, teachers and God, That these four years have rendered thus. Now, with sorrow and with sadness We must leave you. For within your dear ole rooms We got our starts. We shall always remember you Dear old Wendell, Though each of us may go a separate way. We shall never really part. Even after graduation in May, We ' re bound heart to heart. How we ' ll miss you and long again For your dear faces. All our teachers and our classmates We ' ll always love. Looking onward, looking upward Always look above. At last the time has come for us From you to depart You are our guiding Light, the one We hold apart. I t«r ;}« • ! ' i 1 1 ■i] if Soccettf I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this Society to which I have been elected, striving in every way, by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. ” No honor conferred in any high school exceeds that of membership in the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools. Members are very carefully selected on the basis of scholar- ship, leadership, service, and character. ■ -1 , ■ |(’ _ . _--m 1 wM _?iWff- ' -‘;L, .i« jj . yif 1 u 4 y IJ !
