PROPHECY Classmates, our welve years of happy fellowship with one another are about to come to a close. Coming to school, working, and playing together have filled, until now, most of our lives. These years together have been wonderful; they have passed much too soon. Last night I had a dream. I no longer dreamed of carefree boys and girls. I dreamed about each of you, and it was in the year of 1963--ten years from tonight. I always did think that Genevieve Anderson was neat as a pin. Well, if she isn’t wearing a nurses uniform and is now helping none other than Everette Ledford, our Lizard Lick horse doctor. Shirley Harris is a commercial teacher at Wakelon College. To my suprise, Ellen Barnes would not let go of the wheel. She is wearing a gray uniform and is steering the wheels of a Greyhound Bus. Gloria Cooke and Mack Liles, our lovers, who just had to elope in their Junior year, have written a book on the Battles of Love. Bill Pearce is now teaching Smoochology in the recreation room at Paul’s Dairy Bar. I dreamed that Mary Jo Buchanan has persuaded James to name their farm, Ferguson Farms. Dot Herndon, our most talented senior of 53, has been made famous by her latest recording of Why Did I Pick A Hicks. Well, Billy Hobguod is just like I knew he would be, he has LAID Bob Hope in the shade vith his hilarious jokes. Jack Beaman is still wearing white aprons and is a successful groceryman. Doan Starnes said that Mrs. Johnston didn’t teach her to fry an egg for nothing. She is now teaching Home Economics at Bunn, N.C. Wendell has really grown. Lightning Funeral Home in Raleigh has been moved to Wendell and is owned by none other than our own Linford Lightning Blalock. Betty Byrd Sledge has opened a tourist home for honeymooners in South Carolina. Fay Painter has a radio program in Zebulon. It is, How to eat and be Slim. I could see Jerry Todd, as plain as day, driving a long paneled truck and on it was written: Rest Rooms Are My Specialty, I Supply and Equip Everything. Helen Medlin is now a Senator trying to make a law to prohibit Chemistry from being taught in the High Schools of North Carolina. Carl Phipps is now business manager at Dix Hill. I always knew his brain would carry him places, Ted Roberts is a salesman of ladies gaily colored hankerchiefs. He stresses the point that they are the cheapest on the market. Jimmy Scarboro has taken over as hair stylist at Fanny’s Beauty Salon, with Rada Medlin as re- ceptionist and Joyce Liles and Annie Alford as his assistants. Hugh Moody now operates a gum factory. His gum is known as Miracle Chaw. Doris Wade, now Mrs. B.K. Gay, is very determined that her children will have regular attendance at Pearce’s School. Mary, our Bug, Winston is a successful saleslady of backscratchers, Jean Richardson O ' Neal is president of the Farm Bureau in Wendell. Donell Liggins now operates a jewelry store. I hope he has learned to tell white diamonds from blue ones. Well, in my dream, I sure did wander and right into Nowell’s Drug Store. My, what a beaut iful store! It was operated by the Nowell boys. Bobby and James. Margaret Johnson, their efficient pharmi- cist, was busy with her pills for ills. As for me, Alma Lou Pierce, I was trying to keep a room of wide awake fifth grade boys and girls quiet. Remember in September, 1940, when a group of determined pupils entered Wendell School. Never before had such an eager group strived to learn their ABC ' s, which were taught by Miss Jarvis or Miss Hurley. The next eight years passed quickly, but we have never forgotten our faithful teachers nor the wonderful times accompanied by the work. No one could have been prouder than we were to have entered the ninth grade, our first year of high school. Like the elementary years, there was work to be done in order to reach our high- er goals. With Miss Waters as our instructor in the tenth grade, we presented a one-act comedy Three ' s A Crowd. Then we entered Mrs. Perry’s room as Juniors, we knew we had lots of things to do so that we could later become dignified Seniors. During that year, we went to Raleigh for Career Day and later presented our Junior Play, Gateway to Happiness. Our great- est highlight was when we sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet. This was our first banquet, and we really put our hearts in preparation for it. The last and most important year of our school career, the senior year, arrived after eleven years of waiting. Our sponsor was the loyal and well-loved teacher, Mrs. E. T. Boyette, On the second day of school, we received our long-awaited class rings. The class of ' 53 also spon- sored a Halloween Carnival in October. With our principal and sponsor Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Boyette, we journeyed to Williamsburg, Virginia, on January 23, 1953. We all had lots of fun and also increased our knowledge of historical events that took place in Virginia. At last came the unforgettable trip to Washington, D. C. , which we took during the first of March. On this Journey, we were accompanied by Mrs. Boyette and Mr. Harry Helmer. During our four-day stay, we saw many famous places which we had all read about previously. In May we shall receive our diplomas and then our school days will draw to an end. Our years have been busy and happy, and we feel as if they had been well-spent. Now we will go out in another phase of life to begin our work on other goals for which we will receive better and higher rewards. Since we were so well-prepared by our teachers, we face the future with hope and de- termination for each to have a happy and successful life.
