FOREWORD Dr. William E. Steward, President of Wenatchee Valley College, being dedicated to the progress of each individual in the institution, offers these thought-provoking comments to students: PROGRESS is a human distinctive. Unlike animals which have been and unlike God who is, man seeks to become. Man is not granted the privilege of ever reaching the state of having arrived. To him what is good is seldom good enough. We, the students, faculty and community, are caught up in the momentum of this rapidly accelerating progress, manifestations of which are ubiquitous. Progress has brought us ex- tended life-span, bountiful food, convenient and rapid travel, expanded educational op- portunities, and more accurate knowledge of the cultures of the world, both past and present. Our future, from the vantage-point of these accomplishments, appears bright beyond ex- pectations. Yet all of us are apprehensive as we contemplate the fulfillment of these marks of progress. Upon more thorough examination, we come to the realization that our unrest is due to the seeming' inability to accomplish a universal recognition of the dignity of man, and with it the right to determine his individual fulfillment. As we engage ourselves in the process of learning let us be clear in identification of the obstacles to progress. All learning, all development - in short, all progress - is only a means. True progress for an individual, and thus for mankind, is manifest in the ability to use know- ledge for the enhancement of the dignity of man. May the PROGRESS each of you experiences be to this exalted end.
