THE MIKADO ix able hai FAMILY PORTR AIT BAMATIC artistry was achieved in the presentation of Family Por- trait, the rarely illuminating drama produced during Holy Week by Miss Lillian Grace Brown and her dramatic students in the High School and the Iunior College. Convincing and beautiful, it unfolded the story of a mothers steadfast loyalty to her son in the face of blind and bitter opposition from his family and countryn' 2n. It was doubly significant that the Mother was Mary, and the Son, lesus. Marylyle Cunningham, appearing again this year in the role of Mary, gave a strong and moving performance. fn the scene above, she welcomes lesus home after His absence. Other principals shown are Larry Smith, lohn Dearinger, Marilyn Garrett, Charles Bailey, Lois Smith, Bodney Beeder, Betty Ann Paton. The Mikado, brilliant and lavishly costumed comic operetta presented in No- vember, drew capacity houses at both performances. Mr. George Low directed his music students in this delightful singing story of the Emperors son disguised as a minstrel and wooing the beautiful Yum Yum. Tuneful solos and choruses, exquisite costumes, expressive dramatic action --e- frnelody, color, sparkle-!'The Mikado had them all. The effective make-up and drama were due to Miss Lillian Grace Brown, and the charming background scene was the work of the art department under the direction of Mrs. Fern C. Duncan. Principals in the scene at the left are Helen Tresedder, Charles Bailey, Lily fo Hammans, Lynn Heminger, Faye Hamilton, Bar- bara Gwinn, Iack Phipps, and Gaye Wilson. There were those hilarious class assembliesfSt. Patricks Day, Hallow- e'en, Tacky Day. That spectacular job of stage decorating for l949 Commencement eeliterally hundreds of cold storage peonies. Then their lunior Prom, Hawaiian Sere- nade'! -leis, palms, Hawaiian orchids for the Queen, punch bubbling from a volcano! The senior year brought pre-graduation activities galore, some work, some fun. There were occupational aptitude tests, the College Conference, selection of a class gift, graduation pictures and announcements, Tacky Day, Apple Blossom Festival ac- tivities involving many seniors. And finally came lune, bringing with it Baccalaureate and Commencement for the Class of l95l. SENlOR CLASS OFFlCERS--'Ccngrxitulaticns, Dewey, cld boy! The sophomore assembly on Washington's Birthday was A Salute to Our Fighting Men, and presented in tableaux, commen' taries, and stirring music the story of the fighting Yank, from the French and Indian Wars down to the present Korean contlict. The finale ot this impressive assembly hon- ored the flag and included a roll call tor students in military service, with Taps tor those who have lost their lives. A three-year class project begun this year was the making and maintaining of a per- manent roster tor WHS students in military service, to be displayed in the main hall and revised periodically. The class assembly presented in November was a hilarious Variety Show and included a mock faculty meeting, burlesque and character dances, costumed pantomime and dialogue skits, and jun- ior talent singing. A master of ceremonies presided over this medley program. The serious effort of the year was ,of course, the Iunior Prom, held in April. For this occasion the committee, ably assisted by Miss lane Loveioy and Mr. Iack Barnes, class counselors, chose the theme Evening in Paris y and planned a setting complete with the Eiffel Tower, Arch of Triumph, and Cathedral of Notre Dame. Dances and pcp corn sales financed the Prom. IUNIORS CA-CD-Front: Ahl, Avery, Bornmer, Click, Caldwell, Alexander, E. Black, Dibble, Barb, Baughnian. Casebeer, E. Bromily. Row 2: Beverly, El. TUDENT government at W.H.S. functioned through the Council, the Legis- lature, and the Associated Student Body officers, with Mrs. Eleanor Teters as adviser for all. Busiest of these groups was the Council, which met weekly to handle school business. Composed of the A.S.B. officers and the presidents of all school classes and clubs, the Council dealt with matters such as those concerning lawn clean-up, Community Chest campaign, school dances, games and pep rallies, cheer leaders, noon movies, S.A.T. sales, and appropriation of Student Body funds. The Legislature met on call of the Student Body president and considered matters re- ferred to them by the Council because they directly concerned all students. Made up each semester by one elected representative from every homeroom, the Legislature had as its special business the nomination of candidates for Student Body officers and for Apple Blossom Festival royalty. med to represent student body fl? Under the direction of Robert Yetter, the band performed on countless occasions at the football games, basketball games, and pep rallies of the year, giving to these events the spirit and color that band music alone could furnish. In addition the band gave its own lively pep assembly and an after-football-game dance. The band gave a splendid performance in October at the Washington Education Convention held in Wenatchee. INISHING WITH AN l8-12 victory over Central Valley, the Panther gridmen, coached by Iack Barnes, wound up with a iourewin, four-loss record for the season. Handicapped by lack of weight, the apple city squad nevertheless fought their way to victory over several heavier teams. The average weight of the men was 160 pounds, which was even lighter than that of last year's squad. To the local fans, the Cashmere and Omak games stood out as two of the year's best because of the school rivalry involved. One of the biggest triumphs of the season, however, was the upset of the West Valley Eagles, who invaded Panther territory unbeaten and unscored and were trounced, l2-O. 1950 saw a new series started between Yakima and Wenatchee. Yearly winner of these games takes possession of a plastic apple trophy. The Panthers lost it to Yakima this year, but there's another year coming!
