The true American, the Indian, inhabited these areas,-hunted and fished in the forests and the streams. Apple trees have transplanted forests: highways have replaced trails: and power dams have been erected where Indians once found streams teeming with fish. Generations have passed, but the heritage of the Redman is the America of today. In these pages are recorded the efforts of the Class of 1948 to build strongly and wisely around that heritage, so .that generations may have as wealthy a heritage as that left us by the American Indian. DEDICA ION o have transformed the hunting grounds ot the Indian to cultivated or- chards, scientific farms and vast industries: to those who have built towns and mansions to replace wigwarns' and villages, to those who have captured the laws of science and atomic energy as weapons more powerful than the bow and arrow of the Indian, and to every youth who hunts, as the Indian once hunted, for ne f' icate this 1948 Wa Wa. w lelds toconquer, we ded- ADMIN STR!! ION Cl-IIEE LAWRENCE MEAD, ACTING SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS The most significant symbol of the progressive spirit and the change from the days ofthe First American who roamed the hills and the prairies with his bow and arrow is the importance placed upon the necessity oi training superior strength through the chan- nels ot intelligence and leadership. New fields lie waiting for discovery, and there is no limit to the hunting grounds where scientific research await the inquiring mind. CHIEF MEDICINE MAN WARREN AVERY-PRINCIPAL These pages record, the progress of individuals Whose task is that of acquiring knowl edge and relating that knowledge to the job ot being a citizen in the community. The Indian faced the same problems that boys and girls face today. These problems Were solved not by skill alone, but by wisdom gained through Wise and increasing experience. As you enjoy these pages, may the challenge for wisdom cause you to experience broadly and wisely. v--ff'-A 1 --'lfPn, Percival, Hunley, Miller, Donaldson. Bowers, Kyne, Eminger. FLUTE TRIO TI-IE MUSIC DEPARTMENT The most enjoyable part of school life for students and public alike is the music which W. H. S.'s well-managed music department produces. There is no season for musicg it lasts all year around. Each school year several concerts are given in which the band, choir, choruses, and many small ensembles participate. These programs show to the public the high standards prevailing in the school organization itself. In addition to the concerts, soloists and ensembles trom the high school are continually in de- mand to perform for the clubs, churches, and organizations of the community. Music gives the individual a chance to develop his abilities and offers the average person an opportunity to rise above the ordinary and to become an integral part ot the world to which music lifts him. In other words, music takes the person from the work-a-day world and interprets for him the good, the fine, the spiritual, and the artistic world. wnnnlon V 1 1 5 up X X X X f Qi H2-if :+G SPOR S W T COACHING STAFF Barnes, Lolas, Eustace, Ulery, Conway FOOTBALL This year the gridiron team, with only Kuntz and Sansaver, of last year's regulars, overcame their inexperience to pull through the season with four wins and four losses. With Captain lack Garland and Eben Simon calling the plays, and Quarterback Bill Cox giving the signals, the team plowed through one of the toughest schedules ever en- countered by the Panther eleven. The team, boasting a 175 pound average in the line and a 165 pound average in the backfield, showed fire and determination even when the score was piled against them. A good example of this was the final game with Central Valley, when the Panthers came from behind in the second half to chalk up an- other victory. Bill Cox, the rnainspring of the team, received recognition tor his season's effort by being awarded the lnspira- tional Player's Award, which is presented to the outstanding player yearly by the lunior Chamber of Commerce. Scott, Spcrline, Alstrom, Hamilton, Goakey. GIRLS' PHYSICAL EDUCATICDN The promoting of fellowship, co-operation and skill has been the aim of this year's round of girls' sports. All girls have the opportunity to participate in the P. E. activities at some time. Besides the fun in participation and the skill developed, the awards gained by the most ardent players are the much coveted chenille emblems of sportsmanship, co-ordination, and skill. The physical education program began with a good fall turnout in badminton, and this carried through volleyball, basketball, baseball, and tennis. Varsity tennis has become most important in that it is the only sport in which a girl can earn a letter in one season. This year, playday, an annual get-together of girls from the various surrounding schools, was given over to bad- minton. The competition was stiff and challenging, but, above all, true friends were made, fun was evident at all times, and a higher level was reached in girls' sports. Charm and poise characterized these lovely damsels who traveled tar and near cor- dially inviting the state and nation to participate in the coming gala event.
